What does user mean?

I am working on the server code (adding the byte locking stuff) and down in
the select/thread/object stuff I keep coming across the term "user" which
seems to be synonymous with object.  What is it supposed to mean?  Why is an
object a user?  How does it relate to a physical person or a windows process
or whatever?
