That's what I was reading. It provides good information about the COM
interface, but not about the implementation.

Try reading the stuff under "About BITS", in particular the page titled "Life Cycle of a BITS Job".
It states quite clearly there that it uses HTTP or HTTPS (or SMB in newer versions). Nothing mysterious.
