As I get this, the "missing characters bug" could be caused by a real wined3d
deficiency (such as the one fixed by Henri with commit
5f2fcfdd6b3b7ab9c15d2c450a87527d13d144c8) but also by a driver problem, and
Catalyst 10.7 drivers are affected (bug 23842 comment 25 to 30).
I strongly believe this is the same bug as bug 23842 and ATI drivers are the
culprit here, as everyone confirming the bug has Catalyst drivers version 10.7.
You can try to downgrade ATI drivers to an older version and see if that fixes
the problem.
