Preordering (there's even a way to get it for free² right now!) the game gets you access to weekly alpha releases. I disabled the stencil format in the eve-online options by choosing 24-bit depth only and the memory stayed stable. I wasn't sure if this was an ATI driver bug so I'm reporting it here first.
