A temporary solution I found is to change the graphics mode from d3d/TNL within the game(it does not matter which order, just change them) and the graphics are normal one the screen refershes. The artifacts return upon exiting an re-opening the application. Fullscreen mode does not work properly. The title bar of the window still shows when you press <F4> to go into fullscreen. Also, the top and bottom GNOME panels in Ubuntu are still showing.
