This does not seem to affect the demo and possibly not subsequent versions. It appears that there is a CD protection that may be causing the issue. Unfortunately, I am unable to determine the type of protection with ProtectionID. To be able to build it to have 32 bits compatibility, I had to use a chroot with a full set of NetBSD i386 inside.
