The problem is there is a "screen effects" feature (which are like screen shaders in RetroArch, used to emulate old CRTs, etc) which doesn't work. By default, BigPEmu uses OpenGL (BigPEmu main menu > Video > Video Plugin > BigPEmu_Video_OpenGL) but can also be changed to use D3D12 which will cause it crash at startup on macOS 11. Steps to reproduce: 1. launch BigPEmu 1.18 with the following options (also opens a console): wine ~/BigPEmu_v118/BigPEmu.exe * -conout 2. use backspace/enter to navigate backward/forward in BigPEmu, go back to the main menu, then Video > Screen Effect > choose any screen effect 3. an error message pops up: "Failed to set the selected screen effect. It may be incompatible with your hardware or video plugin. You can enable logging and check the log for more details." 4. check the console which shows this error: "[1;31mError: Graphics hardware isn't equipped to run screen effects. (By "soft lock", I mean that FL Studio itself is still responsive, but you're completely blocked from doing anything and the only way to get out of it is to kill the process.) ====== Steps to reproduce: 1. Download and install FL Studio 12 Demo: https://support.image-line.com/redirect/FLStudio_Installer_Google The demo and the full version are the same executable. You will need the Arial font or any ttf named as arial.ttf in "C:/Windows/fonts/". If you have Winetricks just run "winetricks corefonts" (you will need the cabextract package). 2. Download any 32-bit or 64-bit VST to test. This is the one I tried, a 32-bit plugin (http://veg.by/en/projects/syxg50/) The plugin itself is working perfectly. You can use any VST you want, as long as you know whether it's 32-bit or 64-bit. Put the dll file in "~/.wineprefix/drive_c/Program Files (x86)/Steinberg/VstPlugins/". 3. Open the FL Studio version which DOESN'T match the instruction set of the VST you're using. If you're using a 32-bit VST plugin, open FL Studio 12 (64-bit). If you're using a 64-bit VST plugin, open FL Studio 12 (32-bit). (If you're using the VST I linked to, open FL Studio 12 (64-bit)) 4. When FL Studio is launched for the first time, a featured project file is automatically loaded. Click "File" in the top left corner and then "New" to create an empty project. 5. Click "Options" > "Manage Plugins" 6. Click the "Start scan" button with "Verify plugins" enabled (make sure the light is red). Let it scan for plugins. 7. Close the window, click "Add", and then "More plugins..." (under System) 8. Find and select "S-YXG50" (or if you used another VST, pick that). 9. Because the instruction set of the VST plugin doesn't match the host program's (FL Studio), FL Studio will try to run the VST plugin under a "bridge" (which uses ilbridge.exe, the bridging program installed as part of FL Studio). However, the plugin never loads. This results in a number of popular Windows applications partially, or sometime totally, not working anymore, such as IrfanView, Faststone Image Viewer, and XPDF-Xchange viewer. I confirmed that both wine 2.10 2.13, and 2.14 exhibit the same problem. I hypothesize that this issue was introduced in wine 2.8 following the changes for fake dll generation that were announced in https://www.wine-staging.com/news/2017-05-16-release-2.8.html. # Reproducing this issue 1. Install 32-bit wine 2.14. 2. Install 32-bit IrfanView 4.44 - latest version as of this writing. 3. Install `winetricks comctl32` - Microsoft COM control DLL 5.8 for Windows XP, year 2001. Note: #2 and #3 have worked together for me for all wine versions up to 2.6 (I skipped 2.8-9, and 2.11-12). 4. Run IrfanView, select menu entry File > Open; IrfanView crashes. The corresponding wine API is documented in https://source.winehq.org/WineAPI/HIMAGELIST_QueryInterface.html. Other examples of Windows applications that fail with the same message include: * PDF-Xchange Viewer version 2.5 - it doesn't start at all. * FastStone Image Viewer 6.2 - it hangs with an hourglass mouse pointer. The obvious work-around is not to load the native comctl32.dll and rely entirely on the built-in dll. While this works, as it has always worked in the past, the native implementation lacks enough functionality that at least IrfanView and Faststone image capture do not work well. That is why several forum threads recommend using Microsoft's comctr32.dll for such applications. For IrfanView, the impairment is mainly cosmetic, so it can be tolerated. Faststone Image Capture, however, can't display thumbnails past the first screenful (about 20-30 pictures) if the native comctl32 DLL isn't loaded. # Conclusion IrfanView and other important Windows applications fail to work partially or entirely when the native comctl32.dll is loaded. Before version wine 2.10 (possibly 2.8) they all worked without a glitch. To reproduce install the game from the official website https://zenless.hoyoverse.com/en-us/ once the game is downloaded and installed, connect a gamepad with xinput support via USB and start the game. You will need to create an account for the game, this has its own bugs in wine but they belong in another bug report. You will also need to install dxvk using winetricks. Once in game, if the game has not lost focus so far, i.e. you haven't switched apps with alt tab on KDE or gnome, then the gamepad should work well with the game. You can also crash when you start the game (right after the introductory video). Just change the game resolution via the SplinterCell2.ini configuration file: WindowedViewportX=1600 WindowedViewportY=1200 and the SplinterCell2.ini configuration file: Resolution=1600x1200 This behavior only happens when used with DXVK. It doesn't happen with WineD3D OpenGL (it's impossible to test with WineD3D Vulkan, as it completely breaks the look of the game). And of course, it doesn't happen with winex11.drv either. - The game was installed via CD-ROM and is up to date with the latest update (v1.31). - I use labwc/wlroots as WM. - Although I'm on Arch Linux, I compile wine manually with these options: ./configure --prefix=/usr --enable-archs=i386,x86_64 --enable-win64. I bisected the problem to the update to mono 8.1.0. The last stage of bisect is attached. When starting the client a ton of processes get created and then "Maximum number of clients reached" messages get spammed infinitely on the console. OS: Linux 5.15.140 Dist: Slackware 15.0 64 CPU: 9900k GPU: RTX 4070 I found a workaround to the problem to shut off mono as follows: export WINEDLLOVERRIDES="mscoree=" This workaround seems OK since I don't think steam client itself relies on mono but I am not sure some of the apps it launches wont. Any tips or ideas what might be happening here would be appreciated. No issues with the older wine versions up to 8.18 ran steam with mono enabled fine so I am pretty sure some update in mono 8.10 is triggering the problem. When I try to install the 2-disc version of "Sid Meier's: Pirates!" I get a popup-error and some log info. Reproduction steps: 1. Put the first CD in the cd-drive 2. Initialize install "WINEPREFIX=/home/user/.wine-pirates wine d:\Autorun.exe 3. Click through the EULA and start the install 4. Wait until popup-message shows saying "Error 1311.Source file not found: Sid Meier's Pirates!, Disc 1. Verify that the file exists and that you can access it" during the install of "AssetsLANG0.FPK". I have tested in 32 and 64-bit prefix with Windows XP, 7 and 10 with the same results in all of them. This was not happening in any wine version 2.x I tested on my Linux Ubuntu Xenial 16.04. For example I use the Garmin MapSource Program 6.16.3 to insert POIs to my GPS. I am unable to open any GPX file, either a route, or POI file. Drag and Drop will work, however I will not be able to save any change as the program does not know where does the file come from. Saving or Opening a file will cause a crash. See the attachment picture. One is correctly opening the combo box to select a path and a file (this is in wine version 2.x)(not possible to attach 2 pictures), the other display a pop-up error window and following a click the program crash (this is in wine version 3.x). https://www8.garmin.com/support/download_details.jsp?id=209 Second example using the Captvty downloaded on http://captvty.fr/. This program allows the download of French speaking TV shows in Europe and Canada. A detailed explanation of how to install it in Linux wine is given on the website, although in French only. Upon opening Captvty I have to set for each new release the Download directory by clicking on the lower left Options button. Then I click on 'Téléchargement et noms de fichiers' and when I click on the 'Parcourir...' button in order to open a combo box to select a directory, wine 3.x crashes. With wine 2.x it was working on all versions. So my question is : Did you ever test properly your new version 3.x releases ? And when will this quite annoying bug be fixed ? We are now at least 9 month in the wine 3.x releases cycle ... On wine though (tested on current -devel and .NET 4.5.2) that doesn't seem to be the case.
