This function has a local static variable cached_status of type MEMORYSTATUSEX. The content of this structure is returned by GlobalMemoryStatusEx() if tick count since last call is less then 1000. https://gitlab.winehq.org/wine/wine/-/blob/6b04bdf25796c9c76815588bf7bdc36f… However when there are multiple threads calling GlobalMemoryStatusEx() at nearly the same time, then it can happen that: 1) Thread 1 checks (NtGetTickCount() - last_check) < 1000 and finds that it is false (e.g. because long time elapsed since system start and last_check is 0 because it is static). It sets last_check = NtGetTickCount() and proceeds with retrieving the information. 2) Thread 2 checks (NtGetTickCount() - last_check) < 1000 and finds that it is true because last_check was set by Thread 1 just a few ticks ago. And returns content of cached_status which is not yet filled. 3) Thread 1 proceeds with filling the structure retrieved via parameter and after filling it in, it saves it into cached_status. The Thread 2 received content of cached_status that not yet populated with real information. This happens in virtual desktop mode, none of options in winecfg->Graphics have impact, the registry option UseTakeFocus=N also does not help (but helps in other games). The problem does not happen if running the game immediately after starting virtual desktop (without even touching taskbar or opening other windows). In my test program, this happens before the window is shown for the first time, and in wine, my error checking code triggers because the ScrollWindowEx() call fails with ERROR. This does not happen on real Windows; it instead returns NULLREGION. The attached program creates several configurations that attempt to reproduce this issue under different circumstances. On wine, I get ScrollWindowEx() before ShowWindow(nCmdShow): ERROR ScrollWindowEx() after ShowWindow(nCmdShow) and ShowWindow(SW_HIDE): ERROR ScrollWindowEx() after only ShowWindow(nCmdShow): SIMPLEREGION On Windows XP 32-bit, Windows 7 32-bit, and Windows 7 64-bit, I get ScrollWindowEx() before ShowWindow(nCmdShow): NULLREGION ScrollWindowEx() after ShowWindow(nCmdShow) and ShowWindow(SW_HIDE): NULLREGION ScrollWindowEx() after only ShowWindow(nCmdShow): SIMPLEREGION I can't find anything pointing to this use of ScrollWindowEx() being wrong... Wine winhlp32 supports that, but the popups (at least for some HLP files) appear with scrollbars even when scrollbars are not needed, i.e. when all text would fit in the popup. The unnecessary scrollbars can obscure much of the text if the popup is small. If you click one of the scrollbar buttons the scrollbars disappear. Open the attached ROMTECH.HLP in Wine winhlp32 and click on various parts to open popups. Pics show a popup as it initially appears, and after clicking on one of the scrollbar buttons. It did appear in the previous version of either Winamp or wine (I'm not sure) but did not work - selecting any item from the submenu simply did nothing. There used to be a workaround for this bug posted in wine's app database, but it got deleted. Steps to reproduce: 1. Install Winamp, making sure that the transcoding tool and/or the ReplayGain analysis tool are selected. 2. In the playlist window, right-click on any track. 3. The menu should contain a "send to..." submenu, but it does not. Easy enough to trigger. 1. Open table and be seated 2. Change workspace so you can no longer see the table, and wait for the application to alert you that its your turn. 3. Return to the workspace the table is supposed to be on and you will find it has disappeared. The application is definitely still running, and the table window is definitely still active (you can here the alert sounds and cards being dealt) When I came across this issue initially, it didn't occur when using metacity as a window manager. The problem happens with little to no human interaction, yet the timeframes make it unreasonable to actively reproduce. I suspect it started around 10.0 release, but with a -/+ 2 months margin (so close to useless). Anyway, what's the problem ? If Realm Grinder is run for long enough (but 'long enough' here is measured in *days*), it tends to eventually either freeze with a completely black window or crash with an X server error. The attachment has output of two such runs, second chunk is when it just froze, the first when it crashed. 'fixme:d3d:swapchain_blit_gdi Using GDI present.' at the end of both seems to be the moment the problem triggers. It seems to be some kind of a resource leak, but it doesn't affect any other apps running besides it, not even those run by wine. No user action is really required to trigger this - I've seen it freeze after a desktop switch, I've seen it crash when the window was just displayed, but not really interacted with. In Windows, you can type the first characters of a word and the cursor will jump to the first item matching *all* the characters you typed. This allows you to drill down quickly to the item you want. In Wine, when you start typing it only considers the *last* character you typed when looking for a match. On listboxes where you have lots of items starting with the same character, this can make it problematic to drill down to the correct item. This may be better explained with a simple example. This was observed in wine compiled from source (10.6) and packaged in Ubuntu 24.04 (9.0). The issue was originally thought to be caused by SearchPathW, but further investigation showed that this function behaves as it should. There just simply seems to be a special case or different logic in CreateProcessW that isn't captured in wine. Reproduction: Attached are two C programs used to investigate and reproduce the issue. They test behavior of CreateProcessW and SearchPathW. Both .c files are meant to be compiled and placed in the same folder in the following way: - BugTest.exe (BugTest.c) - SomeApp.exe (SomeApp.c) - SomeApp.Component.exe (SomeApp.c) Afterwards, BugTest.exe is run in the same folder. Attached are the outputs of running that program in Windows and wine (output_wine.txt, output_windows.txt). The obvious difference is the failure whe calling CreateProcessW for SomeApp.Component . Proposed patch: Attached is a patch with proposed fix for the above mentioned issue. There is also on output of BugTest.exe on wine compiled with the attached patch (output_wine_with_patch.txt), which is the same as what's produced on Windows. When trying to detour a Recettear - An Item Shop's Tale's custom.exe using https://gitlab.com/redpolline/sone_patch, all attempts to update the game's config ini file fail under Wine, but work under Windows. The game's custom.exe uses the GetPrivateProfileIntA() and WritePrivateProfileStringA() functions to access the game's ini file instead of calling CreateFileA(), ReadFile(), and WriteFile() directly. I assume that the cause is Wine possibly having GetFullPathNameW() as a statically linked symbol within the context of GetPrivateProfileIntA() and WritePrivateProfileStringA(). (As all three of them are exported by kernel32.dll, and therefore the compiler would not need to search for the symbol at build time.) But I could be wrong here. What matters is that when sone_patch detours GetFullPathNameA/W(), GetPrivateProfileIntA() and WritePrivateProfileStringA() should be affected by that detour without being detoured themselves. A good way to see this is by using sone_patch's debug build, as it logs when a detoured function is hit, along with the given arguments. Under Windows 10, multiple calls to GetFullPathNameA/W() are seen in the log. (But no CreateFileA/W() for the ini file.) Under Wine, no calls are logged at all for the ini file. The only call to GetFullPathNameW() seen under Wine is for C:\windows\resources\themes\light\light.msstyles. Which isn't present under the Windows log, so that one is Wine specific.) As a result, the game's button config and display settings cannot be altered by the game's custom.exe. As it gets the original (developer intended) file which is read-only (and owned by another user) on my system. When building Wine with the old WoW64, the game works correctly. The first game, based on the same engine, works correctly with both versions of WoW64. Tested on: * Arch Linux x86_64, Kernel 6.12 * AMD Radeon RX6900XT with Mesa 24.3.3 * KDE Plasma on Wayland (wine is running with the x11 backend) I'm attaching screenshots of Wine 10.0-rc5. [...] 0530:trace:mfplat:async_result_SetStatus 43DCBC58, 0xc00d36c4. (This file is an AAC audio chunk downloaded from the livestream. An MPEG-TS video chunk with a similar filename and .ts extension is also stored but never referenced, presumably because this initialization fails.) The MF_E_UNSUPPORTED_BYTESTREAM_TYPE error appears to be returned by mfplat/main.c:resolver_get_bytestream_handler(); this iterates through registry keys for specific supported MIME types and extensions and then falls back to resolver_create_gstreamer_handler(), which naturally fails because Wine is built without GStreamer support. I can get past that error by adding a registry key for .aac (HKCU/Software/Microsoft/Windows Media Foundation/ByteStreamHandlers/.aac) with values copied from an existing bytestream handler (I arbitrarily chose the .mp3 handler), and FFmpeg (via winedmo) appears to correctly recognize the bytestream as AAC audio, but the game's livestream playback thread immediately crashes with a divide-by-zero exception (the game itself is still playable, but an error dialog pops up and no stream is played).
