Errors are reported on the command line. The attached log file is generated from a clean Wine install. After discussion in this thread, I tried using winetricks cc580 to install a native comctl32.dll: http://forum.winehq.org/viewtopic.php?p=17535#17535 The DLL installed was v5.80 and the application then produced an error indicating that v5.81 minimum is required. I substituted a native DLL of this version and the application now runs successfully.
