The issue seems to be a regression with proton 11. However trying to run the
game even once under proton 11 poisons the Wine prefix.

If like me you're having this issue across multiple proton versions, delete
your wine prefix and create a new one using proton 10.34

NEVER RUN PROTON 11 in the same prefix as Elite dangerous.
