Created attachment 82361 [details] Technical info from LLM about patched .dll files
Sorry for the AI-generated comment earlier. I should have reviewed its wording more carefully before posting.
I however have good news: There's been successful tests of patched dgVoodoo2 2.82 and 2.87.5 with LEGO Racers and Snail Mail, unmodified versions crashed during startup. With the fixed DLLs, the same Wine and DXVK setup successfully ran the menus and an race. Snail Mail’s menus and Tutorial gameplay also worked with the patched versions.
The analysis found code that examines NTDLL exports for an encoded "wine_get" substring. When Wine is detected, the original code follows a path that skips an existing eight-byte state-clearing operation. The patches change this behavior so that the state is cleared under Wine too.
This identifies a Wine-specific code path inside dgVoodoo that contributes to the reproduced failures.
I have made a patched release available on my website. I will attach the technical report produced with GPT-6 Astra.
Now that I've seen the power of AI, I will use it for more interesting projects like these. I think we can all agree that the fact that the creator of this closed source software has made lives harder of Linux users on purpose is not something we'd want to have in the land of Linux.
Instead, I will likely be forking d7vk to include filtering, anti-aliasing and rendering-resolution overrides. That would cover 99% of the uses cases that I would now use dgVoodoo2 for. Using an actual open source option, whether vibe-coded or not, is always the better path imo..
If you want to join me in this effot, do let me know!
About this bug report, I am not a coder. I cannot say with 100% certainty that this is a Wine issue. However, the evidence GPT-6 Astra produced seems to point to malice from Dege. He intentionally sabotaged his app to not run via Wine. I'd say this means we can close this bug report and make it a community effort to introduce an open source alternative that can do the same. I think that's a much better use of our time and AI compute ;)
Thanks for this. Where exactly are the binaries to try?
I built a patcher so you can use your current dll's. https://github.com/cloakedkeys/dgvoodoo-wine-fix/tree/main -- Do not reply to this email, post in Bugzilla using the above URL to reply. You are receiving this mail because: You are watching all bug changes.
