Adding support for other formats means adding more libraries and/or conversion tools. They can all be added but each time one is, it leaves another potentional security hole. I assume there's currently a file size limit, but there also needs to be a dimensions limit or any old nonsense could be uploaded. Again, potentional security issues. JPEG and PNG are already widely supported, and that is unlikely to change. Screenshots on my system default to PNG.
