Managed to bisect the commit that was causing this issue to happen
inside the virtual desktop (06b1a49f5b3e1a5bb109f276a276e6df6ad9a60d).
Reverting it seems to fix the problem but of course, this isn't a long term
solution.

Not sure if I should add the SHA1 hash to the bug report, since the OP was
experiencing this issue outside of virtual desktop as well.
