[Bug 59701] New: Age of Empires II segfaults for some reason on the LTS version of Debian. (11.1) (also used by Devuan 4)
http://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=59701 Bug ID: 59701 Summary: Age of Empires II segfaults for some reason on the LTS version of Debian. (11.1) (also used by Devuan 4) Product: Wine Version: 5.0.3 Hardware: x86-64 OS: Linux Status: UNCONFIRMED Severity: normal Priority: P2 Component: -unknown Assignee: wine-bugs@list.winehq.org Reporter: chaosesqueteam@sogetthis.com Distribution: --- Age of Empires II segfaults for some reason on the LTS version of Debian. (11.1) (also used by Devuan 4). It shouldn't as AoEII has been working for a long time.
0068:err:seh:raise_exception Unhandled exception code c0000005 flags 0 addr 0x7b453fa3
This happens on both the regular AoEII binary, and the Conquerors expansion. AoEII used to work in 2005 or so, IIRC, shouldn't be broken. Other people had the same issue: https://www.reddit.com/r/linux_gaming/comments/9hijta/comment/e6eschf/?force... But their solutions didn't work (making a 32 bit wine prefix, running it there. Same error). So bit a regular 64 bit wineprefix was tried and the 32 bit prefix was tried. ------------------ (what was tried) export WINEARCH=win32 export WINEPREFIX=/home/username/aoe2gold wineboot winetricks win2k wine /path/to/aoe/installer.exe And in the future, to run the game: WINEPREFIX=/home/username/aoe2gold wine "$WINEPREFIX/drive_c/Program Files/Microsoft Games/Age of Empires II/Launcher.exe" ------------------ The game installed fine, both versions, but cannot be played. Intel graphics card. Debian/Devuan very stable LTS. Wine just to just work, but the only thing that works for me now is Unreal and Unreal Tournament (they must have had very careful programmers). I thought AoE II would work too since it's a simple 2d game. But like the simcity/simcopter/streets-of-simcity/diablo1, that seems to not be the way. -- Do not reply to this email, post in Bugzilla using the above URL to reply. In wine 1.x this did work, so this is an actual bug and regression. Same with simcity; but this is treated as a lie. Can you please let the Gen-X and millenials back into the opensource projects. Demo link works for wine-11.6 using new-wow on Debian 11 but this version (https://archive.org/details/aoe-2_20260106) produces err logs for secdrv.sys. Issues seem likely caused by SafeDisk deprecated by Microsoft due to security vulnerabilities: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SafeDisc Regarding err log reported https://bugs.winehq.org/attachment.cgi?id=80827: 0124:err:ntoskrnl:ZwLoadDriver failed to create driver L"\\Registry\\Machine\\System\\CurrentControlSet\\Services\\Secdrv": c0000142 Same error logs when running the installer for: https://archive.org/details/aoe-2_20260106 Error was resolved by copying secdrv.sys from the game cd directory into "c:/windows/syswow64/drivers" directory which had to be created: /home/any/wine_stianlow_wow64_new_pfx/drive_c/windows/syswow64/drivers/secdrv.sys Resolving the secdrv.sys error allowed the game to proceed and successfully install. Upon launching the game however, the following error is shown in a popup: Cannot locate cd-rom. Please insert the correct CD-ROM, select OK and restart the application. Issues seem likely caused by SafeDisk deprecated by Microsoft due to security vulnerabilities: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SafeDisc
Common consensus for old games that used SafeDisc is to upgrade to a version that does not use SafeDisc if possible. Without SafeDisc wine-11.7 with new-wow seems to handle the game without any other issues. -- Do not reply to this email, post in Bugzilla using the above URL to reply. http://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=59701 --- Comment #28 from chaosesqueteam7@sogetthis.com --- So it doesn't work in wine 11 either. Yet in wine 1.x it did work. And I'm told on the wine IRC to "just use newer version!!!" and called a troll. Then banned there Then suddenly my ip is on a "this is a bot" list and I can't even download the needed libs to even test wine 11 anymore (since cloudfare thinks I'm a bot after talking with #wine and #debian on libera irc) Then klined again. Then banned here. Then banned here again. I do not understand why a working project such as wine, which under gen-x and millenial programmers (gen-x who created the project): is now broken for the old games for-which it was originally created (yes I remeber); and this is treated lightly "oh we've moved on from that" Millenial and Gen-X projects have all been maliciously stolen from the actual programmers all across the opensource-landscape. The men who wrote the code banned for social crimes that westerners believe in, from their own projects. I remeber when opensouce followed the hacker ethos. and did NOT obey ANY laws. and was ALL Men. and was proud of it. It was "show us the code". I posted the screenshots of the game not working in both MacOSX wine 10.1 and not working in Debian LTS wine 5 (segfault). Yet you still call me a troll. I am a licensed attorney and I can go to the federal court and file a diversity suit against you and your employeers. Would you like that? I also now can't download libpng etc suddenly "404" (no one else gets a 404 in #macports ) due to someone reporting my IP as a bot. I will sue you for that too. And your employer. "If you report a bug you are a troll or a bot" Typical Gen-Z response. Gen-X and Millenials were happy to head off regressions. Because to us Opensource was a crusade. We cared about it. Now opensource is a resume-pad. Gen-Z just gaslights everyone into believing the bug is not there, or if it is definitivly shown to be there "doesn't matter" because "no one plays that boomer shit anylonger" "ok UNC" "ok BOOMER" etc.
Note: Same stuff in the newer "opensource" (paid by govt/corp, not made by hackers) projects run by Gen-Z (and excluding "mysoginist" gen-X and millenials) newer-Gnome, Systemd requiring new apps, etc
Anyway I've been programming opensource software since 2001/2002 or so (perl, C). And have been making 3d maps for games since 1997 (unreal, unreal tournament), and other maps since 1995 or earlier. (simcity, streets of sim city, simcopter). I've contributed and forked crossfire RPG, nexuiz/xonotic, and earlier made my own opensource stand-alone console games (a slot machine game, GPCSlots, GPCSlots2, a text console RPG (RPG1, (in perl)). So I've done text, 2d, and 3d game work all these years for opensource. (code, pixel art, 2d textures, 3d models, 3d maps, music, soundfx, gamecode, engine code, menu code, etc) And you just disrespect me and pretend I'm seeing things when wine doesn't work as once it did. -- Do not reply to this email, post in Bugzilla using the above URL to reply. So it doesn't work in wine 11 either.
Apologies to the poor soul who may still be trying to extract value from this bug report. Versions of the game without SafeDisc indeed seem to work for wine 11. I posted the segfault on linux. How is that not useful? What else can I do. I posted the screenshots with the terminal output. From both Debian LTS (wine 5)(and wine 8 (lutris)) and Mac OSX (wine 10.1) WHAT ELSE COULD I DO. Yet you diss me "anyone trying to extract value from this bug". GDB, for some reason, never initialized. Was I supposed to debug that too? Now you seem to be implying that using the original binary is "DEEEPPREEECIATEDDD" and everyone should use the "non safedisc new binary" (ie buy the game again) and original windows software from the time is not to be used. Samething I got when I reported the simcity/simcopter/etc installers not working "they're 16 bit, DEEEPPPREEECIIAAAAATEEDDD". This is Zoomer logic
OLD IS BAD DEEEEPPPREEEEEEECCCCCCCCCCCCCCIIIIIIIIIAAAAAAAAAATEED get OUT of here UNC opensource is OURS now. BANNED
RMS was even banned by a Zoomer coup against him some years ago. Has happened in every single opensource project by now. Including the Linux kernel (Linus was soft-coupd; made to go to sensitivity training some years ago: doesn't really get involved in the kernel much anymore because of it) where Zoomers are deleting architectures, removing features, removing file systems (ReiserFS, which worked till the day it was removed), and bragging that they "freed up 100kb for wallpapers!". Is CD-Checking now "DEEEPPREEECIATEDDDD" in Wine? Because only OOOLLLLLDDD 1999 software uses it? Why do you just dismiss this as a bug "Just use newer binaries" (note: I've tried: no the No CD binaries do NOT work either) The segfault does not suggest anything other than an application that worked in wine 1.x now does not work, and hasn't worked since 2-3 years ago when Debian LTS was the then current stable. Is it "ok" that the software that wine was originally written to run (and yes I remeber it was mostly for the games of the 1995-1999 era, plus the office suites) does not run anymore? Why is it "OK" because _MICROSOFT_ has depreciated this form of cd check? This is the same response I got when I reported the simcity installer errors "Well MICROSOFT WOW doesn't support 16 bit, so WE WILL NOT" (this has since changed apparently) Now it's "MICROSOFT NOLONGER SUPPORTS THE CD CHECKING THAT GAMES FROM 1999 DID" with the implied "So why should we, pffffft" Even though it previously worked. This is the new style of programming: * break old things, so UNCs can't use "OUR" software anymore, * throw out the old UNCs, ban them from the project, ban RMS too, ban anyone that speaks against Zoomer societal beliefs or feminism or transgender : BANNNED in OPENSOURCE (Opensource used to be about freedom of speech back when it needed HACKERS to program for it) * ban maaaallllleeesss from "governance", put women and euniches in instead. * create speech codes to ban the unruly male hackers. * Declare victory. Like here "pfft sorry guys, fellow Zoom-Gods, who have to DEAL with this bug: pffft the UNC is complaining about OLD binaries not working in wine: pffft we are beyond that now" You imply I'm an idiot that knows nothing and am "erronously" reporting a bug. I've been programming C for over 20 years, Perl for 25, and did everything as opensource. You can look up my contributions: I implemented wolfenstine enemy territory BSP for my fork of the darkplaces Quake engine somewhat recently, I extended the networkable entities from 32k to 4million (useful for forests), and have done megabytes of code for the game code etc. While I'm not involved in WINE development: I do opensource programming for other aspects of the movement. Always have. And I also do media creation of 2d, 3d and 1d art (1d being music and sound, and text console games). And I gave my name. So if you want to say it to my face: Michael Birkmier. -- Do not reply to this email, post in Bugzilla using the above URL to reply. First you called me a troll and a bot, now you are implying I'm an idiot because some newer version of the game supposedly "works", and also generally casting me in a false light as an idiot for reporting this bug that the original actual-on-cd binaries no longer work. You do this to cast dispersions on me for reporting this bug to begin with. Which is something I've noticed from most Zoomers online: anything to "win" the argument. Your declaration of #WONTFIX has been reported to 4chan's /pol/ and /g/ Old opensource programmers are getting angry at you newer guys takeover of all the projects and your blocking of bugfixes and social manuverings. Especially since you ban the old contributors from their own projects (ex Richard Matthew Stallman booted from the FSF, then dragged back but not as the head after he "learnt his lesson".
