[Bug 60325] New: The Magic School Bus Explores the Solar System installer fails to install msvideo.dll, expects it to already exist
http://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=60325 Bug ID: 60325 Summary: The Magic School Bus Explores the Solar System installer fails to install msvideo.dll, expects it to already exist Product: Wine Version: 11.17 Hardware: x86 OS: Linux Status: NEW Severity: normal Priority: P2 Component: -unknown Assignee: wine-bugs@list.winehq.org Reporter: alexhenrie24@gmail.com Target Milestone: --- Distribution: --- Steps to reproduce: 1. Mount MSBSOLAR.iso 2. Run `winecfg` and set the Windows version to Windows 3.1 3. Run `wine 'D:\setup.exe'` 4. Click the "Next" button twice Partway through installation, an error dialog appears that says: File Copy operation failed - incorrect number of bytes written to disk - source file or destination disk may be corrupted - use ChkDsk. Source: 'D:\MSBSOLAR\SYSTEM\MSVIDEO.DLL' Dest: 'C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\MSVIDEO.DLL'. Despite the error, the program is installed successfully. Some interesting findings: 1. While the error dialog is open there is an MSVIDEO.DLL in ~/.wine/drive_c/windows/system which is an exact copy of /media/cdrom/msbsolar/system/msvideo.dll, but as soon as I close the dialog, the file is deleted. The Magic School Bus copy of msvideo.dll is 121,936 bytes. 2. Windows 3.1 comes with a C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\MSVIDEO.DLL which exactly matches the msvideo.dll that comes with The Magic School Bus. If I delete it and run the Magic School Bus installer, the exact same "File Copy operation failed" error dialog appears. 3. Windows XP comes with a C:\WINDOWS\system\MSVIDEO.DLL that is 126,912 bytes. If I delete it or truncate it and run the Magic School Bus installer, the 126,912-byte msvideo.dll reappears even before I click "Next" to start installation, and the installer does not replace it. 4. Wine has its own version of msvideo.dll at /usr/lib/wine/i386-windows/msvideo.dll16 which on my Arch Linux system is 56,772 bytes. 5. If either the Windows 3.1 msvideo.dll or the Windows XP msvideo.dll is already present in ~/.wine/drive_c/windows/system, the Magic School Bus installer shows no "File Copy operation failed" dialog. Unfortunately, copying in the Wine version with `cp /usr/lib/wine/i386-windows/msvideo.dll16 ~/.wine/drive_c/windows/system/msvideo.dll` does not avoid the error. Despite what the error dialog says, I could find no indication that any Wine function reports an incorrect byte count. The only plausible explanation I can think of is that in practice the installer would never actually install msvideo.dll. Windows ensures that msvideo.dll exists before running any 16-bit program, so unless someone manages to delete msvideo.dll like I did on Windows 3.1, the installer skips that step. The error dialog after successfully copying msvideo.dll is a bug that was never noticed because on Windows it practically never happens. To fix this bug, Wine would have to provide more realistic 16-bit DLLs and actually copy them into the Wine bottle, similar to how 32-bit and 64-bit DLLs are copied in. $ sha256sum MSBSOLAR.iso a5af4bbb763c21454e52a57e0f6a30873bea98ba95910287fe91000bf812bb4a -- Do not reply to this email, post in Bugzilla using the above URL to reply. I actually have a tentative idea for this. We'll see how likely it is to get accepted. -- Do not reply to this email, post in Bugzilla using the above URL to reply. You are receiving this mail because: You are watching all bug changes.
