Release schedule after release?

Looking at the current user docs raised a question as to how to update the 'Getting Wine' section. I know from the past that many users don't know that Wine has been up to this point on a monthly release schedule. Between this ignorance, and binary distributions' stable and unstable trees, the average user may frankly be using 'any old version' (meaning, one cannot even hazard a guess as to what the 'most likely version' they might have is, one has to ask each user specifically) of Wine when they show up on wine-user with questions. So I find it important to document this and hopefully get everybody more or less on the same page, as it were --or at least within a known range of pages. Hopefully, for the release, we could count on that for a limited time, since it is to be hoped that 'everyone' will upgrade to or install that instead of some other previous beta. But the docs, of course, have to be valid for the future as well as (to a limited extent) the past. So how will one "Get Wine" after the release? Will there continue to be monthly public betas? Or will the release schedule change? Will the binary policy change? Meaning that the public betas (if they still exist) will not be available in distribution repositories, but Wine will now maintain its own stable and unstable trees, and only releases will be available to the distro repositories? Will there be different policies or levels of availability for different distros (maybe a Knoppix user will be able to get the unstable beta builds from Sid contrib, but a SuSE user won't)? What should I tell the people? Thanks for any guidance, Holly

winedbg not starting

Hello, AVRStudio.exe hits an unimplemented msxml function and tries to start the debugger. AppDb account problem

A bit over a week ago I received an email telling me that my AppDb account would soon get deleted due to inactivity. I don't really remember creating an AppDb account but it is possible I did. So I went there to check it out but of course I could not remember my password. So I typed my email address and clicked on 'Email me a New Password' but got the following error message: Sorry, that user (fgouget%40free.fr) does not exist. So I tried my other email address and got the same message. So at this point I see two possibilities: * I don't have an account on the AppDb. Why did I receive an email saying my AppDb account was inactive then? * Or there is a bug in the 'Email a New Password' functionality. Maybe it's the '%40' causing the problem? I'd like to make another observation regarding the file selection dialog. If I mount my CDROM drive and add a link to /dosdevices/, Wine's regedit.exe hangs in the file open dialog. I can do "ls /mnt/cdrom" in an xterm with no problems at all. So my first thought is that the CDROM has a bad block, and that it happens to be inside one of the .exe files in the root of the CD, exactly where it has it's icon resource. I did a "cp /mnt/cdrom/* /root" which revealed that autorun.inf has bad blocks. Not a big problem so far. How to fix the permission stuff.

Advice please. This looks a little too big to be done without discussion. This stems from Michael Ost's CreateFile issue and is much more fundamental than the SHARE settings. Consider. ...CreateFile (.... FILE_READ_DATA...) ...ReadFile (...) That is sensible and perfectly legal under Windows but fails under Wine due to an inadequate handling of the generic vs specific permissions. It seems to me that the fix to this minor problem includes: a. Extending the server's Object concept (or at least the ops structure) to include the relevant GENERIC_MAPPING definition for the object. b. Extend the testing in handle.c so that the test of access takes into account the fact that the granted permissions might be generic whilst the requested is specific, and vice versa. This requires a in order to know how to do the conversion. c. Fix up calls to be a little more sensible in their requests. For example ReadFile does not need GENERIC_READ; it only needs FILE_READ_DATA. Alternatively we could specify that the access settings held for a handle in the server are only specific and the appropriate object's code is responsible for converting from generic to specific.
