New wined3d configuration window

So I've been bored lately and decided to start hacking on the wined3d module. This is partly due to my distate with a certain commercial Wine variant for games. I have intermediate OpenGL knowledge and very little Direct3D knowledge, so I have to rely on MSDN for finding OpenGL equivilants in Direct3D. I've been working on a new control panel for the wined3d module in winecfg. There are simply too many potential options to fit it all on that one tab and I know that audio is getting something similar. I was wondering if Wine has a HIG (Human Interface Guideline) that determines how the layout should go. I am also working on the reporting of texture memory for wined3d. Right now, it reports a default of 64mb. WineD3D texture bug

Hi, The past few days I have experimented with Oliver his d3d8 patches. As mentioned before the patches work fine except Shaders have problems. There's one texture/surface related problem I'm trying to debug but I don't know how to proceed nor how to fix the problem. When you create a texture in d3d8 you can specify in what type of memory it needs to be stored. There are roughly two options of which one is to store the textures in video memory and the other in system memory. Storing of textures in system memory has limitations compared to video memory. The main one is that textures placed in system memory can't be directly used for rendering. In order to render the texture for instance need to copy the data to another texture (one which isn't stored in system memory). The problem I'm having appears in 3dmark2001 which creates some textures in system memory and then it directly renders them using DrawPrimitive. This works on Windows. Based on the information (from MSDN) which I gave before this is illegal but somehow it works. In case of wined3d we check in our LoadTexture call if the texture is in system memory and if it is, we don't render it. (which is ok according to MSDN) This 'correct' piece of code causes that no textures appear in 3dmark, removing the check fixes 3dmark. I tried to test the behaviour of textures in system memory on windows using some multitexturing sample from codesampler.com. By default the sample uploaded textures to video memory and I changed it to system memory. Directly rendering textures from system memory didn't work as expected from the MSDN docs. (BTW the demo doesn't work correctly on cedega, they seem to allow rendering of textures in system memory. I guess this is a bug but perhaps this is a 'feature') The sample also works correctly on wine in case of the d3d8->wined3d patches, on the current d3d8 it would be as broken as on Cedega. (The demo is available from http://roderick.student.utwente.nl/sample.tar.gz from the included files dx8_multitexture.exe or whatever is the original sample and sample.exe is the one which uses textures from system memory) To summarize 3dmark2001 possibly uses incorrect d3d8 code but the code works fine on Windows. I tried to test the behaviour using a test (perhaps not a good test) and windows appeared to work correctly and the same for wine. Further oliver had the same problem in maxpayne2 (it uses the same 3d engine I think) and he used a similar hack. Does someone has some good ideas for locating the problem? I think my d3d8 test is good enough but perhaps it isn't. I have uploaded a log of 3dmark to http://roderick.student.utwente.nl/log.bz2 The problem appears near the 'LoadTexture' lines for textures created with 'pool 2' (D3DPOOL_SYSTEMMEM). I think this is http://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=3277 can you chime in there if appropriate? Help with window basics needed

Hello, I have a small struggle with window properties and activation. The situation is this: Half-life 1 has 2 different windows when in D3D or DDraw mode: A focus window and a window to display the output(device window). I have to make sure that the focus window gets the keyboard focus, while the device window stays on top to display the d3d output. On initialization hl tells ddraw the hwnd of the focus window(with SetCooperativeLevel and DDSCL_SETFOCUSWINDOW), then it requests ddraw to create a device window (DDSCL_CREATEDEVICEWINDOW), so the device window is under the control of ddraw, it has it's own wndproc which I can change. Then it starts drawing to the screen, the hl console appears. Then it sets the focus to the focus window and the d3d output isn't drawn any more. When I run in managed mode, I can switch between the 2 windows and eighter see the output or have keyboard input. Now my question is: What is the best way to make sure that the device window stays on top, while the focus window receives keyboard input? It would be nice if it was still possible to switch to a third window and have both ddraw windows disappear. I can change the window properties of both windows, and in this case I code the wndproc of the device window. I have tried to set WS_EX_TOPMOST on the device window, and to show it with SW_SHOWNOACTIVATE if it is deactivated, but that didn't work. Thanks for your help, Stefan

Win32HandleToDosFileHandle / DosFileHandleToWin32Handle

I'm looking to do some changes to the wine vdm - or more accurately to the winedos dll to make the handling for some DOS applications more useful. This is mainly driven from a desire to run DOS apps without a wineconsole, so using the unix stdin/stdout/stderr as the DOS file handles. i.e. ala the BSD doscmd program; mind it also has similar issues (plus I'd have to port it :) There are a few things I'll have to alter wrt to the existing console handling (within winedos), but the main part will be using the JFT within the PSP/PDB and creating SFTs. i.e. in effect fleshing out dlls/kernel/file.c:dos_handles to be a pseudo-SFT. I think I've figured out more or less where I need to hack^h^h^h^hcode. Looking at what's done at the moment, I see the above two functions being used. Now really, what I'd like to have available is Win32HandleToDosSFT and DosSFTToWin32Handle; so I'll have to create something along those lines. So a few questions : a) Is the behaviour of the above two functions correct? i.e. should they be DosFileHandle <-> Win32Handle conversion routines? Or is this just an artifact of how the DOS file handles are currently implemented? b) Do any real apps (that anyone knows of) depend upon calling them? I do see that they are used in a number of places for the existing 16 bit routines. If the behaviour is correct, then I guess I'll have to adjust them so that they involve a lookup of the current PSP/PDB and hence indirect through the JFT. Does anyone know if there is already a defined set of functions for SFT handling at the NT abstraction level? I'd have expected that the NT vdm would have used it if such was available. DF
