[PATCH v18 0/14] MR3938: winegstreamer: Implement CLSID_CMpegVideoCodec
Resolves https://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=9127 . (Some of the named programs in that issue may require additional currently-missing functionality, I didn't check; but if so, that's separate issues.) If you just want to know the format, I'd let decodebin finish construction, then check what's inside. A decodebin is a GstBin, you can just call gst_bin_iterate_elements or something on it.
Sure, but that gets ugly. We'd have to find the demuxer, which is not always trivial.
If you want to be able to switch, like wmvcore!WMCreateSyncReader, I think the best solution would be creating a new decodebin with different target caps.
Yes, I'm kind of inclined to agree with this actually. The current design was meant to account for the fact that IWMSyncReader::SetReadStreamSamples() is supposed to be able to toggle while "streaming", and the way we currently implement that actually... kind of works. However, I suspect that no application has ever used SetReadStreamSamples() in this way, and the code is kind of uglier than it needs to be. The main reason that I think we probably still want two decodebins is: * in order to implement IWMMediaProps::GetMediaType(), we either need to retrieve the compressed format from the "uncompressed" parser, or we need to create two wg_parser objects. I worry about the latter being slow. [There may be other ways around this, though. Also, the slow part of initialization does seem to mostly be autoplugging, so maybe that's not a concern.] * in order to retrieve the compressed format, we either need to introspect the pipeline, which I think is difficult and really ugly from an API perspective, or we use callbacks like autoplug-continue to be notified of it. * if we use autoplug-continue, we need a way to identify which compressed format corresponds to which stream. If you mean the typefind element is slow, it can be removed by setting sink-caps on the decodebin to video/x-ms-asf; it's not like a WMSyncReader should get any other input. And if it does, erroring out is the correct behavior, which it will if given those caps. If you mean it's slow to map caps (video/x-ms-asf) to decoders/demuxers (asfdemux), yeah, can't solve that one. But I doubt it is, GLib has plenty of hashmaps and stuff and the GStreamer devs know how to use them. If you mean it's slow to check which GStreamer plugins exist, yeah, can't solve that one either, but at least it's once per process, at most.

Good point, can't do that with just gst_bin_iterate_elements. But there's plenty of other introspection functions available. For this task, I'd take the stream's pad, find the avdec_wmv3 (or whatever) element inside the decodebin (gst_ghost_pad_get_target + gst_pad_get_peer + gst_pad_get_parent_element), then check that element's sink pad's caps (gst_element_iterate_sink_pads or gst_element_foreach_sink_pad, then gst_pad_get_current_caps). Sure, the memory management could be a little fiddly (especially around GstIterator), but I'm not seeing anything difficult or really ugly. I'm tempted to implement exactly that, just to prove which of us is wrong.
