Looks like something is missing in shell32. Try copy a native shell32.dll to ~/.wine/drive_c/windows/system32/ and report back please if it helps. For me the app then starts. I will have a look into this more deeply in 2 days (i'm a bit limited in time atm). I can't find any documentation for GdiSwapBuffers, so it's probably more or less internal to the API. So what I'm seeing is that SwapBuffers should basically be renamed GdiSwapBuffers. After that a new SwapBuffers is written to check for use of OpenGL, if true, calls opengl32.wglSwapBuffers. Else calls GdiSwapBuffers. Then all we need is opengl32.wglSwapBuffers to call GdiSwapBuffers. And the same pattern follows for the rest of the wgl/Gdi combos. So I suppose this could be done after Roderick is finished with moving wgl over to gdi? Of course it should only be done when we confirm it can take this path.
