Maybe you could try run with sound disabled (in winecfg) and see if you can get the original crash then, if ran with WINEDEBUG=+all. I've taken to using medium fidelity despite the fact that it causes chunks of the terrain to not be rendered. So I don't think that there's anything wrong on the wine side, as I only changed the video card and drivers in the same linux setup (I did not reinstalled linux) and worked flawless with every package of wine I had built in the past looking for a playable wine version.
