The example programs are Starcraft, Diablo II (yes I use wine for gaming). Some games are not affected by this bug (World of Warcraft). I've determined the commit responsible for this: commit dc224421416bd2616bfd52431388a6f9630bc860 Date: Mon Aug 18 21:00:26 2008 +0200 dsound: Tune some parameters to make pulseaudio work. I've reverted this commit on my copy of wine and it works fine for a while now. (IIRC.)
