It appears to be related to Bug 17402, also for Battlefield 2. But I run 1.4~rc1-0.1 for Debian and had this bug for 1.3.37 too. I don't have any slowdowns as described in Bug 17402 but I also get those (rectangular) texture corruptions in more distant objects.
