For that purpose, I installed the xboxdrv (the userspace driver for xbox 360 and 1 gamepads) and after running xboxdrv with the command xboxdrv --silent --trigger-as-button, I started the game. The game has support for joysticks (I made sure I enabled joystick support in the in-game options). However, the game does not detect it, since it does not respond to any button presses or axis movements from the gamepad. When running the game from the terminal, the output I get with the gamepad attached to the PC is attached to this bug report. I have tried running the game natively on Windows 7 and XP SP3 with the gamepad attached and it is detected and runs as expected. Furthermore, by running STO with apimonitor from http://www.rohitab.com/apimonitor in Windows, I was able to determine that the game uses direct input 8, specifically the IDirectInputDevice8 and IDirectInput8 interfaces, to detect and control the system mouse and any attached joystick. It uses in particular the IDirectInput8::EnumDevices to find any available joysticks. In order to determine if this is an issue specific to this game running on Wine, I tried using the gamepad with another game well supported by wine and which also supports joysticks: Trackmania Nations Forever. This one detects the gamepad as a joystick automatically and by adding +dinput to WINEDEBUG, I noticed the following line on the output: Code: trace:dinput:IDirectInputWImpl_EnumDevices (this=0x12f718,0x0004 'DIDEVTYPE_JOYSTICK',0x8fc5a0,0x12238a0,0001). What would happen if you fooled a game that needed 256 colour depth into thinking that's what it is running in while it is actually running at 24bit? I ask this as I am unable to change my colour depth and reduce my resolution below 640x480. And even when I could change my colour depth it meant restarting the X-server. Unix symlinks could be mapped into junction points. This would allow applications (e.g. Picasa) avoid following symlinks if they wanted to. Also, the .net 2 installer would be happier in winxp mode if wine supported junction points (see bug 10601): "The .NET 2.0 Framework installer checks if the target volume is NTFS filesystem type and then uses the FSCTL_SET_REPARSE_POINT ioctl (used for mount points and junctions) to create junction points for each registered assembly in Windows SxS directory to GAC assembly directory (link target). Basically the junction point is used to redirect access from one directory to another." Installing dotNetFx40_Full_x86_x64.exe downloaded from the MS website, the installer will open and verify the integrity of files. The next stage will attempt to install the .NET Framework 4.0 Client Profile. Towards the end of this install the installer will fail with HRESULT 0x80070643, leaving little or no information in the %TEMP% folder as to the cause. The installer will only run if wine is set to WinXP. Process used to reproduce: WINEPREFIX=~/.wine-net40 sh winetricks gecko WINEPREFIX=~/.wine-net40 sh winetricks windowscodecs ie7 msxml3 WINEPREFIX=~/.wine-net40 wineboot WINEDEBUG=+relay WINEPREFIX=~/.wine-net40 wine Downloads/net40/dotNetFx40_Full_x86_x64.exe &> net-out I also attempted to install the .NET Framework 4.0 Client Profile prior to installing the Full package. This provides the same error, the only difference to the above process used was the filename of the Client Profile installer dotNetFx40_Client_x86_x64.exe. Each time I attempted to install I used a clean WINEPREFIX, deleting the prior one before attempting again.
