The log shows Vertex shader compilation failed: :19:1: Warning: Newline in string constant encounterd (started line 18) native d3dx9_36 works around the problem. Digging into it a bit, I see that the game uses shader assembly, and one of the lines of source is def c96, -1, 1, 1, 1 ; somewhere I've got a bug. flipping the vectors with this fixes it.
