It might be useful in future to have Wine advertise its builtin by default instead of 'winetricks -q msxml6' (considering some maturity of Wine's own). There are different methods to detect the presence of MSXML6. One of the most used ones which is also suggested by Microsoft is using registry data. The log shows Vertex shader compilation failed: :19:1: Warning: Newline in string constant encounterd (started line 18) native d3dx9_36 works around the problem. Digging into it a bit, I see that the game uses shader assembly, and one of the lines of source is def c96, -1, 1, 1, 1 ; somewhere I've got a bug. flipping the vectors with this fixes it.
