Additionally, although this is an issue that I couldn't manage to bisect due to how inconsistent it is, is that ever since Wine 9.22, the moment it hits the stage of "Initializing external monitoring..." during loading, Vegas may freeze Wine, causing me to have to SIGKILL every process manually. The effect appears like a black area, displayed very briefly just before the actual content is drawn. I think this has started somewhere with 9.x and I don't see this black flash effect in Wine 8.0. It seems every time there is some activity on the window area the affected region is "blanked" out momentarily before the GUI is drawn. Using Wine 10.1 on Xorg with amdgpu and Trinity desktop. Xfce 4.12 shows same problem. Is there some redraw frequency I can tweak to fix this? The "buggy" behavior is present in wine v9, but wine v8 shows the console output just fine. I believe the related change is in this commit: https://gitlab.winehq.org/wine/wine/-/commit/4b63e888945b8ada2ddc043e435b93… In the commit, it is stated that this behavior can be achieved by starting the app with "./wine app | cat", however that does not seem to be working with wine or wineconsole (Please see attachments) When using WINEDEBUG=+console, I can see the application interacting and writing to the windows console, however nothing is shown on the screen. After a while from clicking said icon, the "Steamwebhelper is not responding" window [2] will appear, with a few different options to restart things with, of which none do any better. I believe the src\vgui2\vgui_surfacelib\Win32Font.cpp (963) : Couldn't get string length line shows up only when this problem can be seen, which could be a sort of a hint at least. Building before the mentioned commit, or reverting it, and efce37afd70 due to conflicts, on current 'git master' will make it work again. Hacking on it a bit, removing the 'wcsupr(refkey->name);' line also makes it work, though maybe that is obvious in this case, and might more or less nullify the point of the uppercasing intended. (Did not try a fresh prefix and clean install of Steam yet due to the cumbersome log-in process, but hopefully that is not necessary here.) Last tested at 'wine-10.17'. The allocator has a lot of custom behaviour that is very visible in how it interacts with Update(). Naturally this has the benefit of writing directly into the mapped surfaces. I was using the GOG version of Incoming, but the demo (the same one mentioned in bug 44864, MD5: 5b1fff6863768eeff95167e510d09a2e, SHA256: dcc55a269c33ea5363cd937284752d7ffe57f4774c55a38dfdd4a9172376563c, 3.8MB file called incoming.exe, available via cnet.com at least) also exhibits the same issue. I have attached the terminal output from the GOG version as log.txt, and I will also attach the terminal output of the GOG version as well as the demo versions of those two. The wine version I am using is from the Arch Linux repositories, and I am using a clean 64 bit wineprefix with no settings changed at all (this setup worked fine before), although I also tried a 32 bit wineprefix, same results. I can start ChessBase 18 from the command line with `WINEDEBUG="-warn+all,warn-dpa" wine start "C:\\Program Files\\ChessBase\\CBase18\\CBase18.exe"` in a 64-bit prefix. The application launches as usual, but after a few seconds, it stops responding to the mouse altogether. The CBase18.exe process consumes around 200% CPU as shown in `top` when this situation occurs. The log output does show new log entries when I focus or unfocus the virtual-desktop window, but otherwise, it does not typically appear to be logging anything. I then stop the process from the command line with, for instance, `killall CBase18.exe`. C&C Tiberian Sun shows the intro videos and the main menu correctly but selecting any buttons in the menu displays only a black rectangle when the menu is opened. In C&C Red Alert II the whole screen is black when the main menu is loaded. This bug occurs from version 612 and onward (now at 613), which basically doesn't open the window at all (but the process isn't killed, so it just hangs in the terminal and I'm unable to terminate it). It seems the amount of time it can take depends on system, on my main machine I've had it take a minute sometimes, whereas my laptop (which is much slower) can somehow do so in up to about 10 seconds. The VS2022 (and I think also VS2019) C++ standard library in C++20 mode uses this DLL to implement the timezone database as specified by the C++ standard. The standard library loads this DLL dynamically with LoadLibraryExW (see <https://github.com/microsoft/STL/blob/ef62d3fa0b8e4e2406b9bb74e916e1ca8a1df…>) and throws a std::system_error (see <https://github.com/microsoft/STL/blob/ef62d3fa0b8e4e2406b9bb74e916e1ca8a1df…> and <https://github.com/microsoft/STL/blob/ef62d3fa0b8e4e2406b9bb74e916e1ca8a1df…>) when it cannot load it. In order to provide compatibility with modern Windows versions, IMHO Wine should thus ship a compatible icu.dll. This issue arose since I recently modernized timezone handling in OpenMPT by using C++20 chrono. For now, I have worked around the problem in OpenMPT. This time, the test harness stacktrace blew up on unwind resulting in getting a wine exception handler coming up at top level, so it may have corrupted memory too. Looks like it's a duplicate of https://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=12401 but isn't. The next stage will attempt to install the .NET Framework 4.0 Client Profile. Towards the end of this install the installer will fail with HRESULT 0x80070643, leaving little or no information in the %TEMP% folder as to the cause. The installer will only run if wine is set to WinXP. Process used to reproduce: WINEPREFIX=~/.wine-net40 sh winetricks gecko WINEPREFIX=~/.wine-net40 sh winetricks windowscodecs ie7 msxml3 WINEPREFIX=~/.wine-net40 wineboot WINEDEBUG=+relay WINEPREFIX=~/.wine-net40 wine Downloads/net40/dotNetFx40_Full_x86_x64.exe &> net-out I also attempted to install the .NET Framework 4.0 Client Profile prior to installing the Full package. This provides the same error, the only difference to the above process used was the filename of the Client Profile installer dotNetFx40_Client_x86_x64.exe. With the recent rustup 1.27.0 using wine-staging with the ntdll-Junction_Points patches, the toolchain installation doesn't complete properly, failing to write to the settings.toml under the prefix home .rustup directory info. A bug with the same root cause is also present on rustup 1.26.0 where while the installation was completing properly, it was failing to remove the .rustup/tmp/* directories, causing issues with subsequent installations. Both bugs express the same behavioral pattern with few differences. I investigated the directory bug firstly, so I will detail this, and confirmed that the problem and the expected solution are the same. Rustup (or one of it's dependency managing files) get the handle of the temporary directory using CreateFileW and then checking if it's a reparse point using DeviceIoControl with FSCTL_GET_REPARSE_POINT. The directories (and the file) aren't reparse points at all, so the readlink fails returining EINVAL. This EINVAL is then mapped to an NT_STATUS using errno_to_status that map EINVAL to STATUS_INVALID_PARAMETER. However this mapping is incorrect for FSCTL_GET_REPARSE_POINT as in this case applications that handle this case like rustup try to handle this case by epxecting STATUS_NOT_A_REPARSE_POINT.
