Therefore I asked for inclusion of [1] "spurious short writes", which got accepted at 2025-04-25. Thank you very much for it. Unfortunately short after it I found there is still an issue, which was a few months not there. So I started bisecting and arrived at [2] d9d012965de, "ntdll: Always map files as writable and adjust permissions.", committed at 2025-03-25. Unfortuntately this can not be cleanly reverted at current git, but with three more commits reverted it makes a wine tree, which can be used with rr-debugger [2]. I could reduce the changes of this 4 commits to a few lines which, are also able to produce a wine tree usable with rr-debugger [3]. This patch is only changing behaviour once for each .exe process, when the session shared memory gets mapped in via the fd received from wineserver. With unmodified Wine this is currently done with a MAP_PRIVATE flag, which turns out is currently just mapping the file content into the process, but does not receive the updates from wineserver. To investigate if this can be fixed in rr I opened [4]. Unfortunately this would be expected to create a overall slowdown for rr. Therefore I wonder if this change was intentional, to map the session shared memory with mmap(MAP_PRIVATE)? When looking at virtual_map_user_shared_data the shared memory gets mapped with mmap(MAP_SHARED). Would something like [3] be acceptable for inclusion? If I expand a tree node to display the next level of child tree nodes with a press on the plus-sign and collapse the child tree node level with the minus-sign after that. The plus-sign disappears and I am not able to expand the tree node again. I have to restart the whole application to be able to expand the tree node again. Wine winhlp32 does not support that feature. A simple Hello World program (console application) does not work at all (see the log file). What is strange is that this happens only on one of the 2 computers that I use. Both run the same OS (Fedora 36) with wine 7.12. The second computer run an Intel i7. The Xeon runs 2 Xeon CPU E5-2660 v4 which means it has 56 cores. Therefore I first get some warnings with regards to the number of CPU: 0024:fixme:ntdll:create_logical_proc_info Improve CPU info reporting: system supports 56 logical cores, but only 32 supported! 0024:fixme:ntdll:create_logical_proc_info skipping logical processor 33 ... 0024:fixme:ntdll:create_logical_proc_info skipping logical processor 55 I'm not sure this is an issue. Note that the binary file was compiled on the Xeon computer with a fresh cross-compiler and with -static -s option: x86_64-w64-mingw32-g++-12.1.0 -o hello_world.exe -static -s hello_world.cpp Also, when I run the binary file on the i7 computer, it runs fine (see attached log). So the binary file is fine. In addition, I can add that both computers run an Nvidia GPU but only the Xeon computer runs the nvidia proprietary driver from rpmfusion. The problem is in the main/postprocess/rebase directory, where it tries to rebase binaries, ultimately calling C:\Program Files\Microsoft SDKs\Windows\v7.0\Bin\rebase (from the Windows SDK), which tries to call the unimplemented function imagehlp.dll.ReBaseImage64, which causes a crash during the build. Since rebasing is just done for better performance, it's not critical and can be worked around by commenting out the relevant makefile command. Still, Wine should ideally support this API, and it's good to document applications that need it. For further details please see the email where I described my experiences, and other Wine bugs I found: https://lists.apache.org/thread/x3p7mv0py2s5hw3cvrm1d3krxgb7cq9k Also if you want to reproduce, you can try compiling OpenOffice on Wine, but it's a very complicated build environment and takes many hours to run, and this bug only happens near the end. And it is remarkable that Wine works so well, when building a project with ~70000 C++ files, 12 million lines of code, 37 external libraries, code generation during the build, calls to many Cygwin tools and Perl scripts, Java and Ant, .NET tools, and lots more.
