When the application starts up, it will check for various shared components, ending up complaining that Microsoft Report Viewer has to be installed despite already installed. Attached is the screenshot of the error. It says, "It's necessary to install an additional programed named Microsoft Report Viewer" ("มีความจำเป็นต้องติดตั้งโปรแกรมเสริมที่ชื่อว่า Microsoft Report Viewer"). Terminal output reveals 2 interesting FIXME's: ``` 0174:fixme:msi:MsiProvideAssemblyW L"Microsoft.ReportViewer.Common, Version=10.0 .0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=b03f5f7f11d50a3a, processorArchitecture=MS IL", L"C:\\Program Files\\HygeiaPharmacy\\HygeiaPharmacy.exe.config", 0, 0, 10D7 A618, 10D7A614 0174:fixme:msi:MsiProvideAssemblyW L"Microsoft.ReportViewer.Common, Version=10.0 .0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=b03f5f7f11d50a3a, processorArchitecture=MS IL", (null), 0, 0, 10D7A618, 10D7A614 ``` This leads me to believe that the application chokes up because it does not receive the correct path to this .NET assembly, part of MS ReportViewer 2010. --- Looking into multiple documents and into Wine itself, I _think_ it would be relatively simple to implement MsiProvideAssembly[A|W]() using facilities already implemented in Wine. Bug 58577 plays an important role on this. I actually would love to get my hands dirty, if not for 2 problems: 1. I don't actually have much time myself. 2. Many years ago, I disassembled a different component of Windows (related to MDM/management policy) in order to debug my graduating project. I forgot everything by now, and it's IMHO not related, but combined with 1. I think it's probably better to stay safe. (Can I explain some high-level idea? Will I run afoul of 2.?) Hygeia Pharmacy is a relatively complex application and requires the full .NET installation (Mono is not enough). I made few attempts to catch the moment this happens with `winedbg` to no avail. I’m using wine-staging 8.14 to test it, although I’ve tried various versions including 8.0. Therefore I asked for inclusion of [1] "spurious short writes", which got accepted at 2025-04-25. Thank you very much for it. Unfortunately short after it I found there is still an issue, which was a few months not there. So I started bisecting and arrived at [2] d9d012965de, "ntdll: Always map files as writable and adjust permissions.", committed at 2025-03-25. Unfortuntately this can not be cleanly reverted at current git, but with three more commits reverted it makes a wine tree, which can be used with rr-debugger [2]. I could reduce the changes of this 4 commits to a few lines which, are also able to produce a wine tree usable with rr-debugger [3]. This patch is only changing behaviour once for each .exe process, when the session shared memory gets mapped in via the fd received from wineserver. With unmodified Wine this is currently done with a MAP_PRIVATE flag, which turns out is currently just mapping the file content into the process, but does not receive the updates from wineserver. To investigate if this can be fixed in rr I opened [4]. Unfortunately this would be expected to create a overall slowdown for rr. Therefore I wonder if this change was intentional, to map the session shared memory with mmap(MAP_PRIVATE)? When looking at virtual_map_user_shared_data the shared memory gets mapped with mmap(MAP_SHARED). Would something like [3] be acceptable for inclusion? Wine winhlp32 does not support that feature. For example, download the Age of Empires trial version from http://www.microsoft.com/games/empires/downloads.htm direct download URL is http://download.microsoft.com/download/aoe/Trial/1.0/WIN98/EN-US/MSAoE.exe Either run MSAoE.exe to install the demo, or use cabextract to unpack the files inside. Run winhlp32.exe from Windows under Wine and load Empires.hlp. Notice the window has no menu strip and cannot be resized. (I tested winhlp32.exe from Windows 98 and XP.) Run Wine winhlp32.exe and load Empires.hlp. (The window contents are completely messed up and unusable, but that's not what this bug covers.)
