First tried to install with "Run as administrator", this gave an error code # 29559 at first try. Then renewed try with "advanced installation", but no success either : "The installer has encountered an unexpected error installing this package. This may indicate a problem with the package. The blizzard.ax codec is loaded and unloaded when the game is launched rather than when a cinematic is played. In wine and wine-staging 10.20, the in-game cinematics for v1.29.2 could be played when using LAVfilters with wine "regsvr32.exe /path/to/LAVFilters/LAVSplitter.ax /path/to/LAVFilters/LAVVideo.ax". However, this no longer works in wine-staging 11.0-rc1 and only a black screen is shown with audio playing. Curiously, Warcraft III v1.27b (the last stand-alone update to classic WC3) the videos will play with LAVFilters codecs on wine and wine-staging 11.0-rc1 when using a virtual desktop. Ultimately, LAVFilters shouldn't even be needed, the blizzard.ax codec included with the game should be used but isn't currently working with Wine. Both versions of WC3 classic can be obtained from hiveworkshop.com: https://www.hiveworkshop.com/threads/wc3-download-archive-1-00-1-31-1-beta-… NOTES: 1. Valid CD keys are needed to play the base game and its expansion. An existing installation with patch 1.27b or older contains the keys in the MPQ files. The keys can be extracted and used with newer versions of the game by using a utility from hiveworkshop.com. 2. LAVFilters can be obtained from: https://github.com/Nevcairiel/LAVFilters/releases 3. All tests with v1.29.2 and v1.27b were done with wine and wine-staging using the Wayland driver by editing the registry and adding string "Graphics" with value "wayland,x11" to key HKCU\Software\Wine\Drivers 4. If display scaling is greater than 100% in GNOME/KDE, WC3 v1.27b may need forced high dip aware behavior with value "~ HIGHDIPAWARE" added to the default string in key HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\AppCompatFlags\Layers. The winecfg DPI setting must match the display scaling: e.g., 200% display scale in GNOME/KDE => 192DPI setting in winecfg (100% display scale => 96DPI). 5. Steps to get it running on a fresh wineprefix: * Install WebView2 runtime using the "Evergreen Standalone Installer" for x64 from Inst https://developer.microsoft.com/en-us/microsoft-edge/webview2 * Set Windows version to Windows 7 or 8. * Use my "SimpleWebView2Browser" binaries from https://github.com/felixhaedicke/SimpleWebView2Browser/releases/tag/v0.1 It is sufficient to set the Windows version for "msedgewebview2.exe" (which is part of the WebView2 runtime): wine reg add "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Wine\AppDefaults\msedgewebview2.exe" /v Version /t REG_SZ /d win8 It does not work with Windows version set to 8.1, 10 or 11. The problem is probably that WebView2 tries to use the DirectComposition API on Windows 8.1 or newer. Message in the WebView2 debug log: DCompositionCreateDevice failed: Not implemented. (0x80004001) The attached WebView2 debug log was captured using the WebView2 logging functions, which can be enabled using the WEBVIEW2_ADDITIONAL_BROWSER_ARGUMENTS environment variable. As the DX11 implementation has been improved in Wine, the graphics stopped working at some point after Wine 2.3. I have attached a log file which may indicate well enough about the root reason of the issue (Should I still run a regression test?) Wine complains *a lot* about the following: err:d3d:wined3d_debug_callback 0x1b309e40: "GL_INVALID_ENUM error generated. Invalid primitive mode.". P.S. There are already an open ticket for corrupted graphics in this game (bug 42729), but this issue is about "No graphics at all". GUI graphics (menus etc.) are still okay. The software is licensed under the GPL and binaries can be downloaded on the author's homepage (currently at version 2.8.63): https://www.tightvnc.com/download.php The 32 bit version also crashes.
