Reproduced the crash with the following Nvidia driver versions: 378.13, 384.59 and with current 387.12. With nouveau and Mesa 17.2.2 the game crashes in a different way (both in Staging and the development version), that's probably bug #38969. Since Proton always uses DXVK for Direc3D 11 rendering (the dgVoodoo2 output), it was common to combine dgVoodoo2 with DXVK to wrap old DirectX and 3dfx Glide code to Direct3D 11, leaving DXVK to translate to Vulkan. As the time goes around, Dege was wary the fact that the last version of this own creation is now 2.86.2 at the time of writing and Lutris never update beyond 2.80 or a modded version called 2.8.2 After some testing and a rare game called Montezuma's Return which have a 3dfx version, I discovery that using dgVoodoo2 over Wine's vanilla DirectX 11 implementation also had the same problems like Proton or Wine-GE (modded versions) with DXVK. This old Glide game works with the lastest dgVoodoo2 without problems, while DirectDraw games like Omikron or Carmageddon TDR2000 fail to work using the lastest dgVoodoo2, but older versions worked fine. But the latter games had GPU diagnose tools and a pattern was found. If the dgVoodoo2 wrapper works, then the virtual dgVoodoo DirectX wrapper appears on devices list. If not, it displays the Wine's safe mode software renderer (DirectDraw HAL). Forcing playing the game, makes them crash or running at slowest speeds. After all testing, the issue happens either using DXVK or Wine's DirectX implementation, meaning that the problem should be found on Wine's code. Computers with Mesa drivers at certain games could start dgVoodoo2 2.86.2 on games like Omikron, which means that this open-source drivers code had an unintended workaround to force dgVoodoo2 to work, but this is rare and not always work. The test with Montezuma Return shows that the emulation code from Glide to DirectX works on Wine, along the DirectDraw emulation that work on certain cases. CD in a CD drive" [Retry][Quit] Clicking "Retry" will make the dialog disappear, then it appeared back almost instantly. Clicking "Quit" will simply close the program. I Love Science's CD was mounted at drive D: Tested with WINE's Windows version 98. I Love Science! is a Win16 application and supports Windows 3.x. WINE: wine-1.5.6 source distribution. It installs, launches, and runs well, and orders can be submitted successfully. I'm not exactly sure what version it is, since it's an evergreen wrapper that downloads a Java app (I think). However, after about 3 minutes the application will spontaneously quit - not sure if it's a crash or not. This happens even if it's just launched and allowed to sit. I am unsure why, although the stdout log (attached) has a suspicious looking line: > # [ timer expired, abort... ] near the bottom. For `DXGI_FORMAT_R8_UINT` (62) that returns 0, so `mf_format_get_stride()` fails and the function returns `MF_E_INVALIDMEDIATYPE`. It logs nothing on this path. Unreal Engine 4.26's ElectraPlayer wraps an `R8_UINT` texture that holds NV12 data as its decoder output buffer, so it gives up before submitting a single frame. The video stays black while the game's separately mixed audio plays. `DXGI_FORMAT_R8_UNORM` (61) maps to `D3DFMT_L8` (50) and works. The two formats have identical memory layouts. == Affected == - Game: Wuthering Waves (Steam 3513350), v3.7, UE 4.26.2, D3D11 mode (`-dx11`). The `R8_UINT` entry is 0; the `R8_UNORM` entry is 50. Patching only the `R8_UINT` entry to 50 fixes playback. With the same trace channels: - 89 `ProcessInput` / 272 `ProcessOutput` calls across two decoder sessions - no mfplat errors - the video renders in game == Suggested fix == Accept 8-bit single-channel integer and typeless formats in `create_dxgi_surface_buffer()` (`R8_UINT`, and probably `R8_TYPELESS`), sizing them like `L8`. Also add a `WARN()` on the `MF_E_INVALIDMEDIATYPE` return. I haven't checked what native `MFMapDXGIFormatToDX9Format()` returns for `R8_UINT`. If it also returns 0, the fix belongs in `create_dxgi_surface_buffer()` rather than in the mapping table. Native `MFCreateDXGISurfaceBuffer` evidently accepts these textures, because the game works on Windows. == Related reports (none found for this exact failure) == I found no existing report of this failure. I searched the Wine, Valve Proton, GE-Proton and Proton-CachyOS trackers, plus general searches, on 2026-09-30, the same day the WuWa 3.7 update shipped. - Not a duplicate of GloriousEggroll/proton-ge-custom#599. That issue was pre-rendered videos that don't loop or replay (fixed via protonfixes, 2026-06-29). It fails *after* a first playback; this fails *before* the first frame. - Different root cause from gamesir-labs/gamehub-for-mac#45 (Ninja Gaiden 4 on D3DMetal). That one is caused by D3DMetal lacking NV12, and was worked around by making `MFCreateDXGIDeviceManager` fail. - Unfixed in the other forks I checked. Tried msxml3 but this simply causes the application to hang. NOTE: Native msxml3 cannot be installed before the first run as this appears to also cause Bug 34028.
