Discussion of AppDB issues sometimes takes place on wine-devel, but few maintainers subscribe to that mailing list, and the issues are generally not of interest to developers. This is a feature request to add a mailing list for AppDB admins and maintainers, as discussed at WineConf2017. Posting to the list should be limited to those groups, but the posts should be archived on winehq.org and visible to anyone. A brief MCVE is attached (source-encoding-agnostic) that shows the problem by rendering a message box. Of course it renders just fine on Windows 10. I originally encountered this when a Cheat Engine cheat table used Unicode headers and emojis for purely aesthetic purposes. Take for example the symbol "????" which is U+1D412: MATHEMATICAL BOLD CAPITAL S I could find out that the only font in a proper Windows install that *does* include that character is `seguisym.ttf`. I used such one liner to confirm this: ``` python3 -c "from fontTools.ttLib import TTFont; import sys; cmap=TTFont(sys.argv[1]).getBestCmap(); print(cmap.get(0x1D412,'MISSING'))" EXAMPLEFONT.ttf ``` Thus, as a workaround, I copied all seg* fonts to my /usr/share/fonts from a Windows install, did a `wineboot -u`, and then tried using the following crude registry modification to force the symbol font. As a result, shell font did change to Segoe, but the math symbols still rendered as tofu: ``` Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00 [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\FontSubstitutes] "MS Shell Dlg"="Segoe UI Symbol" "MS Shell Dlg 2"="Segoe UI Symbol" "Tahoma"="Segoe UI Symbol" "Segoe UI"="Segoe UI Symbol" "Segoe UI Symbol"="Segoe UI Symbol" "Segoe UI Emoji"="Segoe UI Symbol" ``` I also tried setting winecfg's "Message Box" configuration to use Segoe UI Symbol with no change in result. This time I was surprised by a constant 30FPS lock, despite the fact both my game of choice settings and the external tools profiles for its executable didn't have one (indeed if I removed wine's dlls, native d3d9 could easily get almost 10 times as much framerate) Long story short, after some time banging my head I figured this was happening because "Background Application Max Frame Rate" was enabled in the nvidia control panel. Problem being of course that a foreground fullscreen window definitively isn't supposed to be affected by that.
