When modern cross-platform engines (specifically Unreal Engine 4/5, e.g., Borderlands 4) attempt to launch background update scripts via cmd.exe /c, they frequently pass un-sanitized, mixed-slash paths (e.g., C:/users/.../PersistentDownloadDir/GbxRelaunch.bat). Because wcmd evaluates the slash as an invalid switch (e.g., /users), the execution fails instantly with an unrecognized command error. This breaks automatic game restarts and hotfix pipelines for numerous titles. (See attached terminal_output.txt for the exact error). Proposed Solution: Introduce an opt-in registry toggle within the AppDefaults hive that allows wcmd to sanitize forward slashes to backslashes for specific calling executables before parsing. * Registry Key: HKCU\Software\Wine\AppDefaults\[CallingProcess.exe] * Proposed Value: "CmdForgiveSlashes"="1" (String or DWORD) * Behavior: When wcmd is spawned, it checks the AppDefaults of the parent process. If the flag is present, a lightweight sanitization routine converts / to \ in the execution buffer before the standard wcmd parsing logic takes over. Architectural Rationale & Preempting Regressions: * Zero Regression Blast Radius: By defaulting to strict legacy parsing and requiring an explicit AppDefaults override, there is zero risk to legacy enterprise scripts, background redistributables, or unrelated software within the same WINEPREFIX. The execution state remains entirely deterministic. * Avoiding Hardcoded Hacks: This prevents the need to continuously merge game-specific string exceptions into the core wcmdmain.c codebase as new games release. * Empowering Downstream Wrappers: Native Windows cmd.exe occasionally relies on undocumented, dynamic heuristics to successfully execute these mixed-slash paths. Perfectly cloning those undocumented heuristics in wcmd is dangerous for legacy stability. Exposing this registry hook gives downstream maintainers (like Proton and CrossOver) a safe, standardized way to configure the environment via their own application profiles without patching Wine's core C code. Internet Explorer 7 or later is required. Continue?" If I continue, a wine error (page fault) is produced. Something is preventing the launcher from detecting that IE is "installed". Attached is the console paste of all the "fixmes" produced when I click continue, before the page fault popup is shown. I could post the page fault but I don't think there's any point? For example, if I want to install something I have in that share and I run the `setup.exe` file from `wine explorer`, it works; but if I run it from `wine uninstaller`, it fails saying that characters "/:<>|" are forbidden in paths. Also, if I installed MS Excel and try to open a .xslx file from a samba share in Nautilus (right button > open with > MS Excel), it fails saying that it cannot find the file. This makes the UX very uncomfortable, because the user needs to copy the file to a local drive, edit it, and then copy it back to the network share. Independently if Bug 34748 gets fixed or not, IMHO wine itself should do something with Linux paths containing those characters, the same way it does when transforming "/" to "\" or when dealing with uppercase/lowercase files. -- Do not reply to this email, post in Bugzilla using the above URL to reply. In Notepad under Windows these sequences will do nothing. In Notepad under Wine these sequences will cause the character to be added to the document. Perhaps it is related to 'TranslateAccelerator' API but this is just a guess. The real problem is with 'Notepad++' where these sequences are the default accelerators for zoom control so chars are added to the document whenever zoom is changed. The uninstall completes successfully. For some reason the wrong messages are being displayed. Tested with Wine 1.6.2 and Wine 1.7.33 with BOINC version 5.8.16, 6.6.38, 7.0.64 and 7.4.36, all 32-bit. 64-bit uninstall does not appear in the uninstaller list.
