This program was designed to create and display a specific window containing help text rendered via GDI. As soon as the user pressed any key on the keyboard or clicked with the mouse, the special window was supposed to be destroyed and the application terminated. Since this program functioned flawlessly on Windows but crashed under Wine immediately after displaying and destroying the special window, I developed a small test program that demonstrates the bug. This test program logs to the command line what occurs when the same task is executed in a simplified manner. I have attached the source code for this tiny test program. You may copy, modify and distribute it without restrictions to the extent permitted by law. This problem occurs in different sections of QQ, DingTalk, and corporate WeChat. For example, some fonts on the landing page of QQ are not displayed； some fonts are not displaye when sending a message on the meeting interface of corporate WeChat. But on M1, APPs called API:ExtTextOutW, and then text show fails. I just started to suspect that QQ has different versions installed on different machines, so I packaged all the files of QQ installed on the virtual machine into a zip file, and then took this file to the physical machine to run, but the text still cannot be show on the physical machine. I don't know why QQ calls different APIs on the physical machine and the virtual machine to output text, so I'm asking for your help. If I understand it right, bug 47808 was primarily about native libraries getting called at a win32 stack which was not yet committed. Those native libraries then jumped over the guard page, therefore the stack got not grown, instead a crash reported. This aspect was fixed by using the syscall interface and therefore bug 47808 was closed. But there is another issue that causes a msys2-forked process crashing, because after the stack was grown it still misses the PAGE_READWRITE flags. For this Zeb Figura included in the first attachement to bug 47808 "always expand the stack if within the stack reserve" a line adding the flags "VPROT_COMMITTED | VPROT_READ | VPROT_WRITE" to the page that gets the VPROT_GUARD removed in grow_thread_stack. This modification still enables a forked process to run. The issue can be reproduced with an unmodified wine by just - running msys2 bash.exe interactively - then trying to start e.g. notepad from it. Attached file shows the stack when the stack gets allocated - in a working msys2-parent process and - in a failing msys2-forked child process. When modern cross-platform engines (specifically Unreal Engine 4/5, e.g., Borderlands 4) attempt to launch background update scripts via cmd.exe /c, they frequently pass un-sanitized, mixed-slash paths (e.g., C:/users/.../PersistentDownloadDir/GbxRelaunch.bat). Because wcmd evaluates the slash as an invalid switch (e.g., /users), the execution fails instantly with an unrecognized command error. This breaks automatic game restarts and hotfix pipelines for numerous titles. (See attached terminal_output.txt for the exact error). Proposed Solution: Introduce an opt-in registry toggle within the AppDefaults hive that allows wcmd to sanitize forward slashes to backslashes for specific calling executables before parsing. * Registry Key: HKCU\Software\Wine\AppDefaults\[CallingProcess.exe] * Proposed Value: "CmdForgiveSlashes"="1" (String or DWORD) * Behavior: When wcmd is spawned, it checks the AppDefaults of the parent process. If the flag is present, a lightweight sanitization routine converts / to \ in the execution buffer before the standard wcmd parsing logic takes over. Architectural Rationale & Preempting Regressions: * Zero Regression Blast Radius: By defaulting to strict legacy parsing and requiring an explicit AppDefaults override, there is zero risk to legacy enterprise scripts, background redistributables, or unrelated software within the same WINEPREFIX. The execution state remains entirely deterministic. * Avoiding Hardcoded Hacks: This prevents the need to continuously merge game-specific string exceptions into the core wcmdmain.c codebase as new games release. * Empowering Downstream Wrappers: Native Windows cmd.exe occasionally relies on undocumented, dynamic heuristics to successfully execute these mixed-slash paths. Perfectly cloning those undocumented heuristics in wcmd is dangerous for legacy stability. Exposing this registry hook gives downstream maintainers (like Proton and CrossOver) a safe, standardized way to configure the environment via their own application profiles without patching Wine's core C code. This revealed a deficiency in the Direct3D shader parser. The problem seems to be that the game uses the exponent notation for some floating-point literals, but the Wine's parser grammar does not accept that. The demuxer reads and decodes frames correctly, but then wmvcore fails to allocate a buffer for the next sample with E_OUTOFMEMORY (0x8007000e), after which demuxer_destroy fails with Access Violation (0xc0000005). Log shows the following sequence: 05cc:warn:quartz:winedmo_demuxer_read Reached end of media file on demuxer 0x7f99f47ecc40. 05cc:warn:quartz:winedmo_transform_drain Draining transform. 05c8:err:wmvcore:wm_reader_read_stream_sample Failed to allocate sample of 1382400 bytes, hr 0x8007000e. 05c8:warn:quartz:winedmo_demuxer_destroy demuxer_destroy failed, status 0xc0000005 Root cause analysis: wmvcore fails to allocate ~1.4MB buffer for an uncompressed video frame (1382400 bytes = 1280x720 RGBA frame) with E_OUTOFMEMORY. This only happens in WOW64 mode — without PROTON_USE_WOW64=1 video works but the game crashes due to a separate WOW64 assertion failure in the main process (also a WOW64-related issue in 32-bit games on RTX 50xx GPUs).
