Wine forwards this to the other process via WM_WINE_SETWINDOWLONG. That process stores the raw pointer as its own window procedure and calls it on the next message, at an address that is not mapped in its address space, causing a crash. I've attached a small repro (source + prebuilt) which follows how I encountered this bug (developing a mod for a game which has this behavior). It allocates a console (spawning conhost.exe), gets the console window handle and calls SetWindowLongPtrW on it, and then sends a message to it using PostMessageW. This causes the application to crash. I've also attached logs from two runs with wine 11.0 and 11.14 (most recent in my distro). This appears to be a regression introduced in wine 11.11 (commit aed4c444fb0f). Up until then, a check for this existed in dlls/win32u/window.c, but in 11.11 it was removed. Still present in Wine-11.16. The mouse cursor is usually confined to a limited rectangular area around the center of the screen and cannot be moved over the entire game screen. If I move the physical mouse fast enough, the cursor can sometimes escape from this area temporarily, but the problem soon returns. This makes some games difficult or impossible to use properly: edge scrolling no longer works in some games, and menus located at the top or bottom of the screen may be unreachable with the mouse. The problem occurs with the X11 driver, both in an X11 session (XFCE) and under XWayland. I cannot reproduce it with the native Wayland driver on KDE Plasma 6.7.4. Some affected games I have found so far: Empire Earth, Ground Control I-II, Arcanum, Clive Barker's Undying. Can be reproduced with Ground Control demo. Ground_Control_GSI.exe (468 M) md5: 1350f2b5b3d73bba4b01f048d0a3ae91 Ground Control shows an additional symptom when started. Initially, the mouse cursor is completely stuck in the center of the screen and cannot be moved at all, although the left mouse button still works.I have to Alt-Tab to another window (e.g. the terminal) and then Alt-Tab back to the game before the mouse cursor starts moving. With much respect to your work, I don't understand any of it though I do know I'd like to see it fixed whenever someone will be available to work on this issue; if you need further logs or testing done on my end, I know how to follow instructions, which is how we eventually got the game working with a tweaked wintrust -see link at the bottom- and would like to see this work natively without tweaks. The debug logs go through multiple fixmes, eventually reaching "Unhandled page fault on read access", seemingly while parsing DWARF, and then winedbg handles this crash and has an internal crash at the same address. This only reproduces on i386. The binary works fine on Windows. That's the wrong type casting bug of the patch. This patch also fixes 2 demuxer cleanup bugs, but all 3 are basic/obvious memory management errors. Like, why the rust people are not giving us a break. Please apply it and release it. The code it touches is 100% broken. This is not cosmetic. Patch speaks for itself.
