The same games work fine in Ubuntu 20.04. I've tried Wine versions from wine-stable 6.0.1 to 8.0, and every version behaves the same way on each OS version. The same games work fine on macOS using the same Wine versions, so I wonder if the problem is on the wine + (xorg + drm) side. Please let me know what further information you need (logs, etc) to help out pinpointing the cause.
