[Bug 54285] New: Mostly UE4 games failing to start when trying to use faudio by wine itself
https://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=54285 Bug ID: 54285 Summary: Mostly UE4 games failing to start when trying to use faudio by wine itself Product: Wine Version: 7.0.1 Hardware: x86-64 OS: FreeBSD Status: UNCONFIRMED Severity: normal Priority: P2 Component: xaudio2 Assignee: wine-bugs(a)winehq.org Reporter: Alexander88207(a)Protonmail.com Created attachment 73852 --> https://bugs.winehq.org/attachment.cgi?id=73852 Sea of Thieves Hello, since the update to wine 7 it is not possible to run mostly Unreal Engine 4 games. In the log there were indications that something might be wrong with the xaudio 2_7 dll. So I just applied faudio via winetricks and the games work again. Unfortunately this is not a permanent solution as there is a bug on platforms like Mac OS, FreeBSD that if you use native, buildin xaudio the sound does not work correctly in terms of stuttering and slightly distorted sound. As far as I know the games worked correctly in Wine 6.0.1. Unfortunately it is not possible for me to test more in wine-devel because the port is very often defective and also just once again not working. (Last version tested was 7.21 and it was there too) Thanks in advance! -- Do not reply to this email, post in Bugzilla using the above URL to reply. I am already trying to find the change that causes this error. Unfortunately in FreeBSD it is not as easy as it is described in the wiki because we don't have cross-compiling etc so it might take a while. -- Do not reply to this email, post in Bugzilla using the above URL to reply. This is being worked on: https://bugs.freebsd.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=237213 I am waiting for poudriere to finish building the MinGW-w64-10.x tool chains on my host. I will update to MinGW-w64-11.x before updating the diff at bugs.freebsd.org. However, I have yet to incorporate the LLVM parts and upload the patch to reviews.freebsd.org. Hopefully GCC-13 lands in the port tree soon, so we can have MinGW-w64 built with either GCC 12 or 13. -- Do not reply to this email, post in Bugzilla using the above URL to reply. https://kennyguillaume.itch.io/maries-room The game continues to play but without sound (Happens in Minecraft Dungeons aswell). But when i do apply xact_x64 or faudio from winetricks then the audio is working again. -- Do not reply to this email, post in Bugzilla using the above URL to reply. Hello,
i would like to say that the problem is between Wine and FreeBSDs sound system.
Changing to alsa fixed all problems that have been described here.
Changeing the title accordingly to a more precise title.
Please re-test with FreeBSD 15 when it comes out. A FreeBSD bug was fixed recently, where the OSS file descriptor Wine uses for audio was wrongly continuing to block, even though Wine specified non-blocking (https://bugs.freebsd.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=289441). -- Do not reply to this email, post in Bugzilla using the above URL to reply. http://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=54285 --- Comment #10 from Alastair Hogge <agh@riseup.net> --- The problem is not only with OSS, tho, OSS does not work at all. I am running wine-devel-11.16 on FreeBSD-16-CURRENT (updated 2026-09-06). If I attempt to run Mechwarrior 5: Mercenaries with OSS, the game loads up the main menu, and a very brief loud amount of white noise is pumped thru the monitors, this is with winetricks sound=oss, next the game crashes with the classic UE4 or M5M "Fatal Error" which might be a symptom of something else. Running the game with wine built with ALSA, and winetricks sound=alsa enables a mostly playable experience, however there is still much clipping and audio lag, the lag is so bad, that I can just hit Esc to open the game menu, the simulation pauses and the audio continues to play until it catches up with the paused simulation. Normally the audio is paused at the game menu and resumes when the game is un-paused. Sometimes the wine log will print:
ALSA lib pcm.c:8787:(snd_pcm_recover) [error.pcm] underrun occurred Or something about external frame limiters being required.
The last time I tried this was ~1 year ago and I do not recall the audio being so bad, however, I think only ALSA worked then too. -- Do not reply to this email, post in Bugzilla using the above URL to reply. You are receiving this mail because: You are watching all bug changes.

Farley <sean-freebsd@farley.org> changed: What |Removed |Added ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- CC| |sean-freebsd@farley.org --- Comment #11 from Sean C. Farley <sean-freebsd@farley.org> --- With FreeBSD 14.5-STABLE, almost all games that I play work with OSS except for Rocket League. It crashes with both ALSA and OSS. Actually, ALSA crashes with winecfg even in a new prefix if clicking the audio tab. I think something is garbled in the devices it detects. This is with Wine 11.18 from ports (emulators/wine-devel), but has been happening for awhile. I just do not play Rocket League much anymore because of their switch to requiring EAC. -- Do not reply to this email, post in Bugzilla using the above URL to reply.
