[Bug 59078] New: 3 low-res GOG-Games don't work being extremely scaled (i.e. blurred) without able to change options
http://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=59078 Bug ID: 59078 Summary: 3 low-res GOG-Games don't work being extremely scaled (i.e. blurred) without able to change options Product: Wine Version: unspecified Hardware: x86-64 OS: Linux Status: UNCONFIRMED Severity: normal Priority: P2 Component: -unknown Assignee: wine-bugs(a)list.winehq.org Reporter: jmb_tux(a)gmx.net Distribution: --- I have tested more than 40 Windows games working perfectly with Wine 10 using Xubuntu 25.10 STS lately - so I am not experienced with Wine and just use standard way. Three Games: - Worms Revolution Gold Edition - Vertical Drop Heroes HD - Tower 57 are not working at all, as the display shows less than 1/4 of the screen being extremely blurred. So all show the same problem and all have low res grphics. I am using 4k screen with DPI factor 256 and I thought changing one or both - scaling and resolution - would do the job. But the small part of the game output visible does not even change in any way when using FHD (1920x1080) res. Is this a known problem or can you give infos/links about this problem? I think "Worms Revolution" is a game which should work as it is really famous for a reason. Unfortunately GOG is only providing support for the OS given - so in that case for Windows - which I would not use. I discussed about trying to support Wine, too - but at least concerning the support they have orders which does not help gamers. I am an experienced Unix administratior form Sciences and IT industry and if I can help, I can provide further info if one could guide about the important parameters. Unfortunately I am not yet prepared to use development versions of Wine an I am astonished that it is not more important to give the latest stable version. Wine HW did a great job as e.g. Atari Reacharged can not work except for "Blach Widow Recharged" with Wine 9 (Kubuntu 24.04 LTS based) while all work flawlessly with Wine 10. If you can give hint to further information, I would be happy. As my tries getting info like AppDB did not work for me at all. http://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=59078 --- Comment #2 from JMB9 <jmb_tux(a)gmx.net> --- I add a 4th game with same problem and give some details: Title Developer & Publisher Release ----------------------------- ---------------------------- ---------- Worms Revolution Gold Edition Team17 & Digital Ltd 12.10.2012 Vertical Drop Heroes HD Nerdook_Productions_Digerati 20.05.2014 Tower 57 Pixelwerk & 11 bit studios 16.11.2017 Twinkle Star Sprites SNK CORPORATION & Dotemu 25.11.1996 All four currently bought on GOG in the tested version on Wine 10 using Xubuntu 25.10 STS (as the games are all old (8-29 years old, it would not be expected that latest development version will show different results - except a general problem with old games was fixed lately). Maybe there is some info how one may play them with Wine ... As such a blurred part shown on th entire 4k screen is not normal, it may be due to low res graphics on older games - but it is striking that all games show the same small part even though they don't share the same game engine. And thus one can not look for graphics options etc. -- Do not reply to this email, post in Bugzilla using the above URL to reply. http://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=59078 --- Comment #5 from JMB9 <jmb_tux@gmx.net> --- I found a 5th game with the same problem: Title Developer & Publisher Release ----------------------------- ---------------------------- ---------- PixelJunk Monsters HD Double Eleven Ltd. 26.08.2013 as the 5 others games being GOG version freshly downloaded. --- Concerning the 2 questions: 1) X11 or Wayland: I test it on X11 - as Wayland is currently not able to support my workflow - and I am using Xubuntu 25.10 STS to at least have Wine 10 as the latest stable version. - Maybe I will use Xubuntu (i.e. X11 like I use now) and Kubuntu 26.04 LTS when released to get latest stable Wine and with Kubuntu I could look at Wayland ... but I think Wine will make more trouble than X11. What I saw some months ago Kwin does not work proper ... - With more experience with Wine, I may try to get latest development version to better help with bug reports. As I have seen that Worms Revolution got support, I am not able to test it with latest Wine Dev. - would be interest to look at that ... at least with Xubuntu 26.04 LTS. ---- 2) Does it exist demo showing the problem? Well, it starts with full screen showing only the left upper part of the normal screen - so I can not reach for changing otions - so a screen video does not show anything - but I could try getting screenshots of the 5 games having the same or at least similar problem - if this would help. -- Do not reply to this email, post in Bugzilla using the above URL to reply. Unable to reproduce any major bugs with consistency except for PixelJunk Monsters HD. Various rendering backends are used across these games so behavior may vary. Unable to reproduced blurred graphics for any of the games. 1/4 screen rendering seems fairly common for older games for wine and adjusting in-game display settings often works around undesirable any default settings. ** Test Results: *** Nine Parchments WINED3D/gl only works (DAMAVAND/vk crashes with backtrace) *** Worms Revolution OpenGL reported by MANGOHUD so appears not be use D3D backend Directx9c is part of installer process but MANGOHUD reports OPENGL for both renderer=gl and vk. fixme:cryptasn logs appear during d3d9 install so unclear if anything malfunctioned for d3d9: fixme:cryptasn:CryptDecodeObjectEx Unsupported decoder logs appeared during directx9c during install so unclear if OpenGL Regardless OpenGL renderer seems to works well even if as a fallback for d3d9 but OpenGL seems intended as primary renderer based on root dir containing GL files (cgGL.dll, glut32.dll) *** Samorost 2 WINED3D/gl and DAMAVAND/vk both work Game starts fullscreen but Esc key causes it to enter windowed mode. Otherwise seems to work well. *** Tower 57 OpenGL reported by MANGOHUD with install and gameplay results similar to Worms Revolution Separate cmd window appears responsible for game process that accepts Ctrl-C to kill game. *** PixelJunk Monsters WINED3D/gl only works (DAMAVAND/vk crashes with backtrace) Most problematic game with fairly severe rendering bugs. Alt+tab game window from foreground to background and back causes various graphical glitches such as menus disappearing and cursor appearing as black square. In-game display settings changed from default fullscreen to windowed mode causes it to never properly be shown in foreground any longer and always remains running in background. *** Vertical Drop Heroes WINED3D/gl and DAMAVAND/vk both work Switching in-game display setting from default fullscreen to windowed has slight malfunction fixed by alt+tab or exiting then re-entering the game which then starts in windowed mode. Otherwise game works well. -- Do not reply to this email, post in Bugzilla using the above URL to reply. You are receiving this mail because: You are watching all bug changes.

I am using 4k screen with DPI factor 256 and I thought changing one or both - scaling and resolution - would do the job. But the small part of the game output visible does not even change in any way when using FHD (1920x1080) res.
These tests were performed on regular laptop display with default settings so if bugs persist then it may be related to 4k screen with DPI settings specifically. Please retest with later version such as wine-11.9 and post more screenshots if bugs persist. -- Do not reply to this email, post in Bugzilla using the above URL to reply. http://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=59078 --- Comment #12 from Stian Low <wineryyyyy@gmail.com> --- Created attachment 80974 --> http://bugs.winehq.org/attachment.cgi?id=80974 winecfg DPI 256 showing Nine Parchments without 1/4 zoom bug (but shows MANGOHUD "zoomed") I seem to have mistook the meaning of "1/4 part of normal screen output" as the same issues described by this bug: https://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=52959 But bug 52959 describes the case of the entire game being rendered but shrunk to only fit to the top left 1/4 corner of the screen with the remaining 3/4 surrounding area rendered black (typically). However based on reporter screenshot of Nine Parchments it seems that the game is not being shrunk to 1/4 but rather zoomed to only display the top left 1/4 corner of the game which fills the entire screen (and not just 1/4 of the screen). Attached are screenshots of Nine Parchments running with 256 DPI set which shows MangoHUD applied 256 DPI but the game still rendered correctly without zooming the top left 1/4 corner of the game. My original tests used default 96 DPI. DPI increases the size of winecfg window as if zoomed as shown in screenshot but seems not to affect game rendering graphics in the same way so unable to reproduce for a regular laptop display. Does changing DPI back to default 96 fix the 1/4 zoom? Is game zoomed more when DPI is set greater than 256? Suggestion that in-game display settings may still provide a fix, otherwise as stated before it may be more related to the 4k screen with DPI factor 256 which I'm unable to test for now. -- Do not reply to this email, post in Bugzilla using the above URL to reply. http://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=59078 --- Comment #13 from Stian Low <wineryyyyy@gmail.com> --- Created attachment 80976 --> http://bugs.winehq.org/attachment.cgi?id=80976 Commandos screenshot with zoomed graphics on wayland for 256 DPI (not zoomed for x11 despite 256 DPI for some reason) Attached is a screenshot for wayland for "Commandos: Behind Enemy Lines" with zoom similar to "Nine Parchments" screenshot by reporter. My previous screenshots were all X11 which seems to behave different than wayland and seems to better handle fullscreen and resolutions for games. Wayland seems to render many games shrunk at top-left corner of fullscreen surrounded by blackscreen related to: https://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=59078 I'll continue to test all games from both of these bugs for both wayland and x11 because behavior varies widely with a lot of inconsistency that needs to be sorted out to understand the bugs and fixes. DPI changes may not be advised for fixing fullscreen/resolution issues for games. Instead the fullscreen/resolutions need to be fixed without requiring DPI changes as workarounds. Its unclear how DPI should be handled for games even with fullscreen/resolution bugs fixed for default DPI. Even winecfg DPI changes produced inconsistencies so there may bugs that need to be fixed there. -- Do not reply to this email, post in Bugzilla using the above URL to reply.
