I don't really know the swapchain lifetime details, and while I find it a bit weird that we continue presenting to windows after the swapchains objects have been destroyed, I think it was working more like that before: the DCs were created and owned by the contexts instead, and their lifetime didn't depend on the swapchains. -- https://gitlab.winehq.org/wine/wine/-/merge_requests/9778#note_125778

It doesn't do the same thing, swapchain DCs are meant to be presented to the window directly (whether this ends up being onscreen or blitted in win32u is up to win32u), while backup DC involves a GDI blit from wined3d side. -- https://gitlab.winehq.org/wine/wine/-/merge_requests/9778#note_125777

This is just a workaround for linked bug, and just avoids the crash at the cost of dropping the whole compilation unit from debug information. [PATCH 0/1] MR9789: winebus: Use smallest report size for joystick axis

Some games don't handle 32-bit sized joystick axes well. Assetto Corsa Rally, which was released a month ago as an early access and is still v0.1, is a recent example. The proof of concept 16-bit patch resolves the problem for many users and hardware on Linux, (https://github.com/ValveSoftware/Proton/issues/9220#issuecomment-3647591465) and users with open-source hardware confirmed the behavior of the game on Windows. Since it's the case that the game is non-compliant while the wine is perfectly compliant, we might be able to push and wait for the developer to release the fix, but I believe that the fix will help to improve compatibility for some old, non-maintained, non-compliant games. -- https://gitlab.winehq.org/wine/wine/-/merge_requests/9789
