Hmm, that's probably because you initially created the config file via the root
user, with no permissions for your local user.
Try
chmod 666 ~/.wine/config
then edit the file.
The User Guide cannot point out all the weird things that may happen if people
use strange ways to install things, I think.
Ah, crap. Now I realized what the REAL problem is:
You're trying to *run* a non-executable *config* file, thus getting the bash
error message, of course.
Which instruction "told" you to do it like that?
(In other words: which part is not evident enough and has to be fixed?)
BTW, what kinds of other issues did you have with the new User Guide version
mainly improved by me?
It's cool to have a Dumb Clueless N00b User (tm) (no offense - that's just a
joke!) who is able to point out all the "weaknesses" of the docu...
I suggest making a deal:
You just tell me about all the issues you ae able to recall, and I'll walk you
through remaining problems.

Anyone working on this? I traced an installer bug down to here but it's a mess
with all the 16/32 and A/W crosscalls. Should this be split to not share code?

Nope, the headers ware fine, so now the grapics is better in some places and
worst in others, I'll send a proper log about this in the next few days.

i have read the documentation, the readme, and the FAQs on the website and i am
still getting all sorts of problems that none of these pages even touch upon.
here's the latest...
the documentation tells me to set up several things in the configuration by
entering ~/.wine/config
I do this and it says bash: home/Brian/wine/config: Permission Denied
yes I am obviously new to Linux and this is very frustrating to you I know but I
have no other source of help for this problem. There are several Windows
programs that I MUST have and if I can't get this to work properly I have to
uninstall Linux and go back to that garbage OS: Windows XP. Any help appreciated.

Oh, I compiled with nvidia drivers and a gforce4, instead of using the mesa
headers, this may be causing the texture problem, I' ll try with the mesa
headers and post any updates.

Well, dsound now may be working. I have a mute desktop, as my sound driver
doesn't' t work, but the game apparently starts without errors, I'll compile
wine tomorrow on my SLOW notebook, just to confirm that sound works. BTW, the
graphics in the intro is fine, much better than before, but when the game
internal intro starts, well, I'll attach a screenshot (Texture loading problems?)
