The machine is a compaq presario r3000. The display
is 1024x768, 24 bpp.
I'll attach seven snapshots of the problem on the
various screens of the installer.
Messages like the following were also displayed, which
might explain why all the windows in the screenshots have
garbage window text:

I can confirm that InstMsiA.exe will not install using Wine CVS. I've set the
version to Win98 in winecfg and set the dll overrides correctly using winecfg
and WINEDLLOVERRIDES. The app immediately returns to the prompt without
displaying any gui or console output.

Summary: Kid Pix Deluxe 3 crashes on startup
Product: Wine
Version: CVS
Platform: Other
URL: http://broderbund.com
OS/Version: other
Status: NEW
Severity: normal
Priority: P2
Component: wine-misc
AssignedTo: wine-bugs(a)winehq.org
ReportedBy: dank(a)kegel.com
To reproduce: buy a copy of Kid Pix Deluxe 3
(list price $20, but you can get it for $2 at
http://www.shop.com/op/aprod-p18756232?sourceid=3 or $5 at
http://www.surpluscdrom.com/seansky82aw-store/kidpixdeluxe3.html)
or borrow one from your neighbor's kid :-)
Run winecfg and tell it to act like win98
(or you won't be able to start the installer).
Run the installer under a fresh copy of Wine.
When it asks you to register, click 'register later'.
You'll have to click and enter data past several
poorly rendered screens, but amazingly, installation
seems to complete properly.
Before you start the product, you may need to copy
the hidden file configit.dll from the kpinstaller directory
of the cd into the directory where you installed the game.
(The file on my disc doesn't show up in linux, so
I had to grab it under windows.)
Unfortunately, trying to start the product itself
fails quickly with an exception:

Phil:
You've misquoted me. If you're running an old version of Wine and you report a
bug, we *can't* help you, because Wine has changed so much in between your
version and CVS. I get the feeling that you think Wine developers don't care
when our changes break apps. The truth is we work on Wine because it's
important to us, and we care greatly about apps working. We realized the WM
rewrite would cause regressions, but far more good came from the rewrite than
bad. It's easy to think we don't care that yours and other apps are broken
because of the rewrite because we haven't fixed it yet, but the truth is we
seriously lack developer manpower. There are a million items that need to be
completed in Wine, and we only have so many people that can and do work on them.
Eventually the GL issue will be resolved, but know that between now and then,
we are constantly working to improve wine and better the end user experience on
so many fronts.

Yes, copying that one file by hand from the CD-ROM on a
Windows system into the kid pix directory gets us
past that error. So it's a system problem of some sort,
not a Wine problem!
(The game still doesn't work, but that's another bug.)

I can confirm this behavior exists with CVS. The screen corrects itself when
you switch to another window in the WM and then switch back to the app.

Nice try, but it's worse: there's a file of that name in the directory KpInstaller
on the cdrom, but is only visible when the disc is mounted
on a windows box, and only if you show hidden files!
IIRC there are several 'tables of contents' on cdroms,
one of which is the portable iso9660 filesystem,
the others being the RockRidge and Joliet extended
tables of contents. Perhaps the file is only listed
in the Joliet table of contents, and is thus only
visible if mounted on a windows box.
I will see if copying that file by hand rescues the installation.

Pekka, despite that you are talking about v1.00 (and not v1.09) I can offer try
using my patch [3], which helped me from a crash in libGL.so in 8 bit video
mode. It maybe incorrect patch, but it worked for me. ;)
No, it didn't help me, but you can never know about another box and its setup. :-)

Yes.
Starting (menu)->Help, the wine help viewer is started, but without the help
file opened. The arguments are passed in a shared memory block, which wine
doesn't provide.
Still unresolved...

This problem doesn't appear when using true OSS, only when using ALSA's OSS
emulation. Hence, it works fine in, for example, 2.4.27. When using a kernel
that uses ALSA, the problem can be worked around most of the time by using
wineoss and running the game at nice 19, though there are still some problems.
Attempting to use winealsa is just painful :P. As for what makes the
difference between true OSS and emulated OSS, I couldn't say...

This error still exists in 20050930. I have a sample application showing the
same behaviour. It seems that the error can be triggered faster on SMP systems,
and when using more threads.
Another observation: When setting the wineserver process to SCHED_BATCH
scheduling policy, it takes much longer until the problem arises. I thus suspect
a race condition either in teh wineserver or in the communication with the
wineserver. Using EnterCriticalSection instead of Mutex objects does not change
anything.
Any advice on how to solve this bug is greatly appreciated. I think file access
in threads is a pretty critical thing, and I'd be happy helping to find a solution.
