So, it appears that in the cases where Steam freezes, it is stuck in
dump_memory_info, writing a 3.3G file onto my disk, since that's the size of
dc[0]->size. I'm very happy that I discovered this, because I've erased the
files in question, and freed up lots of wasted space.
Now... if I could figure out why it wants to dump the memory in the first place...
There's obviously some kind of an assertion that fails..but why. I have a 150 MB
log file with trace enabled for everything - let me know what to grep for, and I
can post the result here.

Well, i never encountered this "bug" anymore apart from netmeeting. There you
encounter the bug when you want to connect to an ils server, but as a work around
you could just fill in it's IP-number.Apart from that looks like it's really
never used by other programs. I'll abandon this bug as i think it's not worth
the effort
now implementing it.

Yes, starting the game still results in the application being in an event loop
without anything displayed on screen.

You can e.g. start Locomotion. In Windows the Progress bar takes 2-3 seconds.
On Wine it takes 20-30 seconds. It's the same in the game, although everything
is rendered nicely and the sound plays.

The ChurchWindows 2005 demo starts installing fine, but
terminates with a dialog box saying
"Church Windows requires Internet Explorer 4.01 SP2
or later in order to run."
This happens even if Firefox 1.0.4 and the
corresponding ActiveX plugin are installed.
Seems like Firefox ought to be able to satisfy
the need somehow...
