Summary: Command and Conquer Generals (Zero Hour) doesn't draw
ground textures (possible shader issue)
Product: Wine
Version: CVS
Platform: PC-x86-64
OS/Version: Linux
Status: UNCONFIRMED
Severity: normal
Priority: P2
Component: wine-directx-d3d
AssignedTo: wine-bugs(a)winehq.org
ReportedBy: ben(a)atomnet.co.uk
The ground in the game stays a particular colour rather than being the texture
it should be (I have a feeling this is a shader related issue). i.e. the island
in the intro the ground is just white (with light effects still added) and
starting another skirmish map where the ground should also be desert it starts
out white then changes to an off shade of pale green. All units and buildings
etc are textured fine. The build menu items are slightly off though, they should
be greyed out when not buildable but instead they turn black and white (as if
someone has tried to fax them).

Well I just tested it in wine with 8bit Color - Depth. The game starts and is
fully playable except, that there are some wild color distortions. My guess is
that the X11 - Palette doesn't match the Windows Palette. But as Louis hack
suggests, the game also works in higher color depths.
Note that I did test in Managed Mode and not with a virtual Desktop, as Louis
did.

Then try starting this game with X set to 8-bit color. Se if that will work.
Also I'm not sure if you tried or not a "virtual-desktop" mode? If not then try
enabling it from winecfg.

It wouldn't be so much of a problem but the main window seems to be stuck to
"always on top" so you can't bring anything above it, even worse you can't move
it either, so when the window to enter the CD keys comes up or any other window
you have to right click on the gnome task bar (or whatever WM you're using)
select move and then try and stick it (the new window) in a corner, praying you
can see enough of it for you to be able to fill in or read whatever is there.

Summary: Thief D3D renders VERY slowly, with blocks of colour

Status: UNCONFIRMED
Severity: major
Priority: P2
Component: wine-directx-d3d
AssignedTo: wine-bugs(a)winehq.org
ReportedBy: a.hurst(a)shef.ac.uk
As of version 0.9.16:
In Thief: The Dark Project (Gold) Direct3D renders very slowly - roughly one
frame a minute - and is sporadically overdrawn with solid blocks of Red, Yellow,
Cyan, Magenta
Runs very well under 0.9.15.
Gfx card is Nvidia TNT2 with 16MB vram.
As of 0.9.16 noticed new TRACE output from dlls/wined3d/device.c
"..IWineD3DDeviceImpl_GetAvailableTextureMem: stub, emulating 64MB for now"
This code hasn't changed since 0.9.15, it's just started being called!
Might not be helpful, but recompiling with "static unsigned int
emulated_textureram = 16*1024*1024" - to match my GFX card's actual VideoRam
doesn't fix.
To reproduce - simply start/load game - menu system runs as normal, loads game,
then game engine runs as described.
On x86, Gentoo Linux, Xorg-7.0

Hello Mike,
thank you for testing. You are right, probably I did something different: I
forgot to specify that I did not install *all* software from python-2.4.3.msi; I
selected "Register Extensions" and "Utility Scripts" only. If you select
everything (the default), pythonw.exe is installed. However, I did an
installation under MS Windows right now, and choosing just "Register Extensions"
and "Utility Scripts" has no effect on installation of pythonw.exe there. Also,
the file selector is available under MS Windows, and typing an installation path
manually has the desired effect. Sorry for giving you incomplete information!

Bug 5744 prevents you from right-clicking *ever*; this bug, even if you take the
steps to fix bug 5744, prevents you from alt-clicking until you left-click.

I'm not so sure it's that difficult.
The best place for this might be kernel space, but couldn't we cache the (case
insensitive) file names in a directory somewhere and just compare our current
file with that? I'm not sure why that would necessarily be much more cpu
intensive than a straight comparison.

No they don't. They still fail exactly as specified in this bug using
wine-0.9.18 (GIT fd61c3f24bd6a6b589df6e1bb528cf5b7221dc98).
The only thing that has changed is a new error message at the beginning of
setup:
err:ole:get_unmarshaler_from_stream Failed to read common OBJREF header,
0x00000001
If you've made this application work, please specify the version of Wine you
used, which native DLL overrides, which non-standard registry keys, etc. so I
can reproduce your results.
I opened this as one bug instead of two since
a) It makes the reproduction recipe easier to follow
b) Demo mode failing could be due to setup failing
Hope that it's ok then.

But, fortunately, I found a person who is doing them for

Please re-open this bug as a web site bug. Please add this

There is case where performance can be improved, but I'm afraid this bug looks
like it boils down to the basic problem of it being damn hard to prove a
case-insensitive filename doesn't exist on a case-sensitive filesystem.
Approximately 88% of the CPU time is in doing this.

are essentially unnavigable the bugs get so bad.

The fix is to clear This->gdiFont in OLEFontImpl_SendNotify.
However, I am worried this will break some apps because the
OLEFontImpl_AddRefHFont and OLEFontImpl_ReleaseHFont implementation looks wrong.
I think it should keep a list of the HFONTs it has given out, with each one
having a separate ref count.
