Jesse, I don't think patched and compiled builtin DLL was a reason for this
report. I guess Simonas has experimented with the HOWTO a bit (or such). Today
I had updated my nVidia binary drivers to 8762 from 8178 and had got very
similar effect.
With earlier drivers my Xorg was able to use only one video mode that I
predefined in xorg.conf, lets call it 800x600__. But XRandR extension was able
to switch to lots of standard modes by itself then (including std 640x480).
Newest nVidia driver passes only that predefined mode to Xorg or particularly to
XRandR. Hence, XRandR is finding only 800x600 mode and Wine fails to switch to
640x480...
Although this bug is probably invalid, I am waiting on Simonas for such log to
clear the situation out:

The point of wine-preloader is to map memory before glibc is initialized, so we
can't call anybody else's code before our own. If your gcc now requires %gs to
be initialized, then you use -fno-stack-protector to compile wine-preloader.
I'm using "gcc version 4.1.2 20060814 (prerelease) (Debian 4.1.1-11)" and it
works fine for me, so I guess Ubuntu must have broken things somehow.

I had the same problem with wine-0.9.19 using a nvidia 6600GT with:
nvidia-kernel 1.0.8762-r1 and nvidia-glx 1.0.8762. I solved the problem using
this patch
http://www.thehandofagony.com/alex/wine/patches/wow-patch-0.9.18.diff, and
following the how-to on this page:
http://appdb.winehq.org/appview.php?iVersionId=5109
But this create a new issue, when you are in a big city, o in a structure, the
game crashes with the following error:

Minor opcode of failed request: 5 (X_GLXMakeCurrent)

We see Louis saying that similar bug in demo doesn't depend on overriding
ole32,oleaut32,rpcrt4 to native. I feel some confusion trying understand this.
Peto, do you use override for all these 3 DLLs or only for single oleaut32?
If you are overriding 3 DLLs, then can you confirm that demo version behaves in
such different (worse) way?
If only 1 DLL is overriden, then can you try to override all 3 DLLs and say
shortly whether has something changed, please?

Summary: Wine-preloader segfaults when compiled with GCC 4.1
unless using -fno-stack-protector
Product: Wine
Version: 0.9.19.
Platform: Other
OS/Version: Linux
Status: UNCONFIRMED
Severity: major
Priority: P2
Component: wine-binary
AssignedTo: wine-bugs(a)winehq.org
ReportedBy: scott(a)open-vote.org
https://launchpad.net/distros/ubuntu/+source/wine/+bug/56965
Found on the Ubuntu bug reports:
"The problem seems to be that the %gs register that holds the thread local stack
is not setup correctly since the normal _start function is not use in
wine-preloader. The stack protector uses the %gs register and the stack
protector is enabled by -fstack-protector.
If you compile the wine-preloader with -fno-stack-protector it will thus not
cause segmentation fault."
"The real fix is to correct the wine-preloader to follow proper
convention, I assume. For now turn off the stack protector as a
work-around and file a bug with the wine devs."

It is strange, but I cannot even replicate the bug. The program no more crashes
that way. I tested both with old and new Import2000, regression tested between
0.9.18 and 0.9.19 and it all works (except for other reported bugs, such as 5845).
Whatever it was, I cannot catch it :-(
I upgraded kernel 2.6.17.something to 2.6.17.8 since. Faulty kernel? Electricity
shortage? I really don't know. I'm testing on other machine with 2.6.17.7 too.
Bug disappeared so quickly as it appeared.
Should it be marked as CLOSED/WORKSFORM?

Logfile, bz2-ed +loaddll,ole,imm,msvcrt,msi OK oleaut32=b
Logfile with builtin oleaut32.
Again, I aborted the program immediately when the (wrong) date displayed.
If I would attemped to change the wrong date, program would just beep upon
clicking on "OK" a won't proceed any further.
I mean, GETTING the date from system is the first fault, and SETTING is the
second. Of course, they may be connected, they may be caused by the same bug.
However I feel, that it could be better to first solve the date, that program
offers (tat he gets from system).
Now, the logs end at the same moment -when program displays the offered
"today's date". One can compare, where is the difference between native and
builtin oleaut32 behaviour.

I'm assuming you downloaded msvcr80.dll from dlldump, in which case, that dll is
a beta of the final msvcr80 and shouldn't ever be used. Even if you find a copy

bug (lack of msvcr80.dll) is a duplicate of the bug dealing with manifests, bug

Please try the installer without DLL overrides and report problems with that.
The reasoning behind this is that we can usually easily fix bugs in our COM

working around them in Wine) is harder.

Is this maybe an application that uses native d3dim.dll? I've seen such an
oddness with that library. What basically happens here is that an
IDirect3DViewport interface is created and then the caller requests D3D
statistics to be written to that address, which is obviously nonsense and will
destroy the viewport's private data. Because of this the device pointer is
NULL when the viewport is used.
I suspect that GetStats should return an error in this case, what has to be
done is to write a test case for this behaviour and if windows returns an
error implement simple object tracking for viewports and check the pointer
against stored interface pointers in GetStats.

Mouse pointer acts good in menus ,but in game is unsuable - you can move it but reacts very slowly
and inaccurate ,the most interesting this is that even in game it acts good on lower side of the
screen(where weapons ,characteristics and such) are shown.
It also acts good in game when you press Esc and save/load menus are shown.
Game is inplayable because of that.
I would add debug info ,but i dont know how(yet) ,if someone could tell me which command(s) i
should use in terminal i will add it.

"To compile and run Wine, you must have one of the following:
Linux version 2.0.36 or above"
and
"Linux info:
While Linux 2.2.x should still work and Linux 2.0.x may still work
(older 2.0.x versions had thread-related crashes),
it's best to have a current kernel such as 2.4.x."
Libc is 2.3.3 here... (was 2.3.3, I installed the 2.3.5 from 10.2 now).
The kernel is 2.6.17, 'home-compiled'. I can't find any options in the
config related to threads.
$ getconf GNU_LIBPTHREAD_VERSION
NPTL 2.3.5
recompiling Wine as I write... How can I check if the kernel is Ok?

The Patch has not been accepted because of following reasons:
1. The patch is missing the filename header, and cannot be applied
to the sources by running 'patch'.
2. the patch was posted with the following legal notice:
"Notice: The information contained in this e-mail
message and/or attachments to it may contain
confidential or privileged information. If you are
not the intended recipient, any dissemination, use,
review, distribution, printing or copying of the
information contained in this e-mail message
and/or attachments to it are strictly prohibited."
That tells us "You may not use this patch."
You have to post patches without that.
3. the message did not contain any license information (e.g.
Author: Renu Rajput (Tata Inc.)
Copyright 2006 Tata Inc
License: LGPL.
Adding that would help.
4. The message essentially repeated much of the bug report in bugzilla.
That's not needed. Just refer to the bug report.
Any one of the above four might have been enough to cause the
patch to be ignored. Fix them all and you've got a good shot.
Two more tips:
5. The bug report in bugzilla does not link to your proposed fix.
Often after I post a proposed fix, I add a comment to bugzilla saying
something like
"Patch sent:
http://www.winehq.org/pipermail/wine-patches/2006-July/029145.html"
Not only does this give another way for people to stumble across and
review your patch, it also helps avoid duplication of effort.
I had no idea you had sent in a patch for this bug already!
6. Patches that do not get applied need to be resent after a few days.
Every time you resend it, you should try to improve it or the test case
a bit, and make sure it still applies against current cvs or git.
Use the same subject line as before, but append "(resend)" to the end.

I wonder if you compiled wine yourself, that you need the 2.6 kernel headers.
The package is available in the testing series, and extra series in
slackware-current.
Here's a hint from the 10.2 changelog:
a/glibc-solibs-2.3.5-i486-5.tgz: Recompiled against header files from
linux 2.4.31 (linuxthreads version) and linux 2.6.13 (NPTL version).

It installed fine until it started the import tool,
which showed a black window and more or less locked up

(Does that match the symptoms you saw?)
I didn't see a crash in the console output like you did, though.
I then reproduced the lockup with

Jan,
My apologies for not being more clear. The game hangs no matter what I do to
the sound settings, and I now think my two log files may be showing two
different problems. When MOO2 starts, it plays a small animated movie before
beginning the actual gameplay. When I checked only OSS sound and set the
hardware acceleration to emulation, the sound for the introductory movie was
much improved, but after the movie was over and actual gameplay began, the game
still hung when I moved the mouse. Based on what Jesse said, I am hopeful that
Wine 0.9.18 will fix the crashes, and as soon as this version is available from
the Fedora repository, I will try it out and report back.
