Same problem here:
wine-0.9.19, glibc-2.4, ncurses-5.5, Gentoo 2006.
May be the problem is glibc and locales that is compiled with.
Or another possible resaon can be problem with kbd driver in X.
What do you think about this?

The flickering you mention in the bottom left corner of the screen (under the
chat area) also happens on ATI 8500 series cards & higher, mine being a 9550.
Luckily with the ATI 8500 series cards & Higer there is no crashing, just the
flickering. the flickering has been there for at least the last two or three
versions of wow, although I'm not exactly sure about exactly how many.

I'm seeing the same thing as you now.
Copying MSVCR80.dll to windows/system32 doesn't help; the installer aborts with
C Run-Time Error R6034: An application has made an attempt to load the C runtime
library incorrectly.
See http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms235560.aspx
Evidently Wine will need to acquire manifest support
as described by the url you cited to run any C++ app built with
Visual C++ 2005. Oh joy!
This is also blocking bug 3972 and bug 4894, and probably 5792.
But 5792 mentioned a possible workaround,
setting SystemDrive to C:, but that doesn't seem to help.
Bug 4894 mentioned a possible kludge:
http://www.winehq.org/pipermail/wine-users/2006-May/021624.html
comment out FindActCtxSectionStringW in kernel32.spec
but that doesn't seem to help.

I restarted my computer a few times and tested this fix. It seems that you are
correct, and that restarting the computer and flushing the video "junk" corrects
the crashing issue.
HOWEVER, there is STILL (even after a fresh restart or two and JUST running WoW)
the flickering in the lower-left-hand corner. I have tried it with and without
the nVidia patch, and both yield the flickering. Any answers?

Can you try this again with a fresh .wine? I'm not getting this error.
However, about halfway through the install, the installation aborts because we
can't seem to load msvcr80.dll, which is required by the installation-supplied
utlsrf07.dll which is required by the installation-supplied mnysetup.dll.
msvcr80.dll is included with the installation and installed correctly into
c:\windows\winsxs\...\ but we can't seem to find or load it for whatever
reason. winsxs is where windows installs side-by-side dlls. These dlls are
supposed to be determined by the manifest file in the application directory. I
assume this is extra functionality that we'll need to implement in order for
this to work. Changing to wine-binary, as that seems fitting for the problem.
See the following link for an explanation:

I have heard of this happening to nVidia based cards. However, I have also heard
from people with the X series Radeon cards having the same problem (myself not
being an exception, obviously). So, I first had installed wine from apt-get'ing
it and just running it out of the box. Then, I apt-get remove'd it, and rolled
my own with the patch for the nVidia graphics problems. However, the crash still
persists. Any ideas would be most welcome.

-> Add a NULL check for lpDirect3DDevice3 in

return DDERR_INVALIDPARAMS if the device is 0 in any case. I suspect that the
app calls SetBackground without initializing a device before. It passes a
random material handle because it can't have one without a device.

i spent quite some time trying to find out why this happens.
The pattern I see is:
- multiple threads doing IDsDriverBufferImpl_GetPosition()
They try to enter the critical section and have RtlpWaitForCriticalSection
in their backtrace.
- 2 of them have additional in the stacktrace a DSDB_MMAPCopy()
Somehow the piece of code doing this gets injected on top of the previous
stack? It is unclear how this is done, but it might be ALSA specific.
And yes, I have added some debug code that show this is the case (and not
just some random stack corruption).
What I suspect is that one the calls has just acquired the lock, but
the pushed on top instruction flow tries to lock it again, but fails.

really crashed in ddraw itself, but i forgot where exactly. However, in later

way (in gdi) so now i don't know anymore if this is because your rewrite reveals
another bug in gdi, or whatever. Fact is it doesn't run anymore, but the cause

code / wined3d. I'll close the bug report, can you please retest the games and
file a seperate bug for those who you find still broken? If it turns out that
two games are broken for the same reasons then we can resolve all but one bug
report that deals with the same bug as a dublicate, but it is really hard to
debug many different bugs in one report.

err:d3d_surface:IWineD3DSurfaceImpl_SetMem Not supported on render targets
Urgh, that sounds really, really nasty.
It appears that the application creates a render target and wants to set the
pointer where to find the surface data. Technically render targets should be
in video memory, so there's no way for apps to set a surface pointer.
The problem for wine is that our 2D render targets need a dib section, and
when the dib section is created gdi decides where to put them. There used to
be a hack for old ddraw in gdi32 to allow ddraw to set the memory for the dib
section, but AJ really disliked that and was glad to remove the hack after the
ddraw rewrite. I'm afraid there's no way to get that back. Maybe we can do
some memcpying(slow) or the game calls that because of incorrect capatiblity
flags.

It is normal that you do not have a wined3d.dll file in your system32
directory. The real stuff is in the .dll.so files, the .dll files in system32
are just for applications which check for the existance of certain files.
wined3d.dll.so is a wine-specific dll, it doesn't exist on windows so we do
not need a fake .dll

Well, we still use the old software rendering code for 2D games by default,
except if the application lies to us and requests a D3D capable surface for no
reason(worms world party does that). You can work around broken games by
forcing gdi rendering. This won't help for applications which request a
DDSCAPS_D3DDEVICE surface AND initialize a d3ddevice without needing it, but
this is the same behavior as with old ddraw.
The crash that you are seeing is that the initialization code in wined3d
determines the capatiblities of your opengl installation, and this init code
apparently crashes if you don't have opengl. Additionally we always report to
have 3D capatiblity altough we shouldn't. These are some things which I didn't
have time for adding to wined3d yet, sorry about that.
So no, you do not need opengl by design to run 2D games, it is just missing
error checking in createFakeGLcontext and GetDeviceCaps. (an if(something ==
NULL) return D3DERR_NOTAVAILABLE; check might do the job)

That class is apparantly Active IMM, which is described here:

There are a number of bug reports which boil down to this class missing,
e.g. bug 4054

here's something very weird: wined3d.dll is not present in my system32 folder.
However I DO have /usr/lib/wine/wined3d.dll.so.
Looks like wined3d.dll wasn't built/created but wined3d.dll.so was. I DID enable
the opengl USE flag in Gentoo (but like I said, I have no 3D hardware.) The only
build log I have is Gentoo's portage log, which logs all output from configure
and make. You want some grep from that? what should I grep for?
Just technically, how is wined3d.dll releted to wined3d.dll.so?
And I did rebuild 0.9.19 with debug enabled, and got a log. I'll create an
attachment.

At work I use a licensed V4.05 with which I've experienced this problem.
Honestly saying I've not tried the 5.21 eval version yet. But I've discovered
some interesting things regarding the problem: the application correctly works
with wine if you start it with
wine keil/c166/bin/l166.exe
or with any shorter command, but with longer ones as e.g.:
~/keil/c166/bin/l166.exe
or
./keil/c166/bin/l166.exe
(which in my case are the same) or anything else longer than the most above
command line the thing doesn't work.
I've tried to copy it to the wine's c: drive and to start it from there with
wine c:/keil/c166/bin/l166.exe
Because of the too long command line the result is the same.
When I run l166.exe under windows the command line length doesn't affect
anything. Nevertheless I can imagine that it's merely about a buffer overflow
bug in the l166.exe application which doesn't cause crash under windows but it
definitely does under wine.
Could you please try this command line story also with the eval version?

Thanks, but that was not helpful.
The strangest thing is that when I run Hitman 2 demo from the same explorer.exe
window, it works perfectly fine, when I quit it and start Contracts (full
version) right away, it does not. Can someone confirm this bug maybe with the demo?

Where can I download a movie that crashes VLC?
Also, does the crash still happen with wine-0.9.19?

Summary: incorrect paint of invisible buttons
Product: Wine
Version: CVS
Platform: PC-x86-64
OS/Version: Linux
Status: UNCONFIRMED
Severity: normal
Priority: P2
Component: wine-gui
AssignedTo: wine-bugs(a)winehq.org
ReportedBy: cjstimpson(a)afinternet.net
Using PAF 5.2.18.
Create a new paf file.
The "Family" tab is shown. If I click the "Pedigree" tab and click back to the
"Family" tab, I get two buttons showing up that shouldn't. They are "Other
Marriages..." and "Other Parents...". They should only be visible for
individuals that have multiple spouses or multiple parents.
I see similar problems when navigating with the arrow buttons to the left of the
list of children or to the right of the parents.
If an individual has, say, 5 children, and I hit the button to the right of the
father's father. And if there are less than 5 children now showing in the list
of children, I still get 5 buttons at the left of the children view. The extra
buttons should be invisible.

Using PAF 5.2.18, I open the notes editor, and hit cancel. I always get a
dialog asking whether I want to save what I just did, but I didn't do anything.
By the time I hit cancel, editor->nModifyCount is up to 3 when it should still
be zero. The first increment of the 3 was from setting the font.
msdn docs say for EM_GETMODIFY:
Remarks
The system automatically clears the modification flag to zero when the
control is created. If the user changes the control's text, the system sets the
flag to nonzero. You can send the EM_SETMODIFY message to the edit control to
set or clear the flag.

Parentage/Ownership problem test app
Test App! Tries to mimic what Diablo does as much as possible.
Build with:
winegcc -g some.c -lddraw -ldxguid -lgdi32
Expected result: pulsating white drawn to entire screen
Windows 2003: works correctly
Wine: black screen (hack fixes it...)
The game actually does request the parent to be its first window. However,
because of this piece of code, it is overwritten to be desktop. Warning, you
can't comment the parent reassignment out because it breaks even more...
>From dlls/user/win.c approx line 985:
else if (cs->hwndParent)
{
if ((cs->style & (WS_CHILD|WS_POPUP)) != WS_CHILD)
{
FIXME("warning! overwriting parent!\n");
parent = GetDesktopWindow();
owner = cs->hwndParent;
}

This is what Diablo is doing.
0x10020 "#32769"
| - 0x10022 "Wine Systray Listener" "Shell_TrayWnd"
| - 0x10024 "DIABLO" "DIABLO"
` - 0x10026 "" ""SDlgDialog"
| - 0x10028 "Copyright \xa9 1996 Blizzard Entertainment" "SDlgStatic"
` - 0x1002a "" "SDlgStatic"
10026 plays intro video. After destroyed:
0x10020 "#32769"
| - 0x10022 "Wine Systray Listener"
| - 0x10024 "DIABLO" "DIABLO"
` - 0x20026 "" "SDlgDialog"
| - 0x2002a "Single Player" "Button"
| - 0x20028 "Multi Player" "Button"
| - 0x1002c "Replay Intro" "Button"
| - 0x1002e "Show Credits" "Button"
| - 0x10030 "Exit Diablo" "Button"
| - 0x10032 "" "SDlgStatic"
` - 0x10034 "" "SDlgStatic"
10024 is what is being asked to update the screen. Unfortunately the actual
visual interface is contained in the 0x20026 branch. So no wonder nothing is
seen. The hack causes explorer which manages the desktop to repaint along with
all its childs on mouse movements?? My guess is that either 0x20026 is supposed
to be attached to Diablo main window or that 0x20026 is being handled wrong.
BTW Vincent, your window chart has to be out of order because even though the
desktop is not created when worms calls CreateWindowEx, the desktop is created
first and everything is created as child of desktop.

Please try again on wine-0.9.19, you're using a rather old copy of Wine.
And please remove or rename ~/.wine before you test again
to make it easier for us to repeat.
Also make sure you don't use WineTools or any other helper.
I tried the app but couldn't figure out what to do after
connecting to a hub. Can you give a click-by-click guide
to reproducing the problem?
