Summary: regressions: Supreme Snowboarding fails since 0.9.19
Product: Wine
Version: 0.9.20.
Platform: PC
OS/Version: Linux
Status: UNCONFIRMED
Severity: normal
Priority: P2
Component: wine-binary
AssignedTo: wine-bugs(a)winehq.org
ReportedBy: hoehle(a)users.sourceforge.net
Hi,
I've been testing Supreme Snowboarding 1.033 on Debian Ubuntu Breezy and Dapper.
While the following versions work, more recent ones now fail.
Works:
20050725 Breezy
0.9.9 Dapper
0.9.15 Breezy & Dapper
0.9.16 Breezy & Dapper
Fails:
0.9.19 Dapper
0.9.20 Dapper
I recommend using win2k mode, because the preferences requester then offers
OpenGL as rendering method (next to Software2, DirectX7 and DirectX6).
However, none of the bugs is related to OpenGL as I've also tested Software2
mode, with identical results.
There are possibly several bugs:
- Display_Config.exe may crash when selecting anything else than OpenGL
rendering. Or it does not crash, but it does not refresh its window correctly,
until OpenGL is choosen again.
- Running Supreme.exe initially works, however as soon as one enters the race or
training menu, both screen animation and sound become chopped up, while CPU goes
to 100%. It is as out of every second, the machine stands still for half of it.
The snowboarder avatar is not rendered (Keith, Vincent etc.). If continuing
from there, the game hangs as soon as one tries to enter the course (after
selecting snowboarder, board and whether). Luckily, wine reacts to Ctrl^C, a
window pops up and enables to terminate the program.
With 0.9.15/16 CPU% is at 80% while in the menus (anim and sound playing), and
100% during race.
To choose a rendering method without Display_Config.exe, edit:
Games\Supreme\rd_config.txt:
api_name = "OpenGL";
width = 800;
height = 600;
depth = 32;
card_id = 0;
fullscreen = 1;
o wine-0.9.19 produces the symptoms describe above.
o wine-0.9.20 behaves even worse than 0.9.19. It doesn't run at all and yields:
X Error of failed request: GLXUnsupportedPrivateRequest
Major opcode of failed request: 143 (GLX)
Minor opcode of failed request: 17 (X_GLXVendorPrivateWithReply)
Serial number of failed request: 384
Current serial number in output stream: 384
I found a message where vitaliy(a)kievinfo.com thinks it's an ATI bug.
http://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=6098
However I have an Intel i810 on-board chip.
o wine-0.9.15/16 with DirectX7 rendering produce some incorrect results compared
with Software2 or OpenGL modes (DirectX6 is even worse). That's a topic for a
different, future bug report (I'd prefer to report current behaviour with these
if the next 0.9.21 would work again).
I'm sorry I haven't attached any logfiles. I'll readily do so if you tell me
which of the many options to log with WINEDEBUG=... could help you.
After installing the game, I had to perform the steps in WININIT.INI manually:
[rename]
c:\windows\system32\Mfc42.dll=c:\windows\system32\_Mfc42.dll
c:\windows\system32\Msvcp60.dll=c:\windows\system32\_Msvcp60.dll
c:\windows\system32\ws2help.dll=c:\windows\system32\_ws2help.dll
c:\windows\system32\Msvcrt.dll=c:\windows\system32\_Msvcrt.dll
Of course, msvcrt.dll is being ignored (builtin default)
I'm quite surprised wine did not do that for me. Did I miss something?
o I offer to also test the missing versions 0.9.17-18 if this helps you.
However the site where I usually download your distribution does not list these.
http://wine.budgetdedicated.com/apt/pool/main/w/wine/
To test some versions under both Breezy and Dapper, I made use of wine's ability
to locate its files itself. I used dpkg --extract directory and set the WINExyz
variables. So identical wine binaries where tested with both Breezy and Dapper
and always produced identical results.
Regards,
Jörg Höhle

ya i realized that every time when i run L2.exe something is changed in system
folder , when i try copy all system folder from private server patch its run ,
but i have to copy every time before i run and i have to change atributes
everytime (so i do not know what is that bug , cause it didnt happend in
windows)
but in result i can start Lineage , only performance is low (i suspect cause
that my integrated graphic card doesnt have T&L and vertex shader hardware and
wine emulate opengl functions slow)

Maybe setting DirectDrawRenderer from "gdi" to "opengl" would help to increase

but just for a case no-one hasn't tried...

I followed a discussion and agree this Wine bug should be closed as INVALID (it
is VALID for FC5 RPM builder), but can I add some comments?
Joe, now that you know using compiled and packaged versions of Wine gives
different results, you should try contacting package maintainer and seeing how
FC boxes of both of you differs (in order to keep Fedora package world in a
peace and harmony).
Maybe freetype or fontforge package versions differs inbetween? Of course, we
expect you have compiled exactly Wine version 0.9.20 from a repository and not
the latest (to test that;)
* joe(a)eshu.net wrote:

Of course it should, but judging from a lots of Wine bugreports quite large part
of them just aren't smart enough to provide those dll's. Installers (or makers
of them) relies on a belief that dll's would already be in a place. This is fact
for a lots of Windows setups but it isn't so for a Wine setups. One Window
setup runs some tens of apps, while one Wine setup is used to run mostly 1, 2 or
3 apps at max, which mostly doesn't bring mfc42.dll. Such is my probabilistic
guess ;)

err:module:import_dll Library MFC42.DLL (which is needed by
L"Z:\\home\\joe\\.wine\\drive_c\\TOPO!\\Topo.exe") not found
Wine does not provide MFC42.dll, and you need to acquire a copy of it and put it
in windows\system32. The errs and fixmes on the command line are common for
installers, and they are harmless. The summary for this bug is 'installer' and
all the reports/comments are about the installer. As the installer now works,
this bug needs to be marked as fixed and closed, and a new bug needs to be
opened for the app. I'll leave that up to you. Even if a newer version does
not install, that is a completely different bug, and should be filed as a new bug.

I must admit that the it does look to me like this is more of an app level bug,
but OTOH, shouldn't the installer take care of the neccessary dll's?
Once again though, I'd say push this on the stack until I try with a leter
Topo! version.

Excuse me, I used to always build wine form source, but then I thought I read
that the wine project and Fedora Extras were working together and that the FE
rpms were somehow legitmated. My apologies.
In any case, I wiped all the FE wine rpms and rebuilt wine 0.9.20 from source.
The only thing that I omitted from my configuration was libbidi (bi-directional)
language support, as I only ever use left-to-right languages.
winecfg ran OK and I simply accepted all the defaults. The topo!-3.4.2 appeared
superficially to run OK, though there were many errors on the console, cf. first
subsequent attachment. Post "install", though, the app failed to run, cf. second
subsequent attachment.
I suppose that now it's more of a semantic point whether this is bug for the
topo-3.4.2! installer under wine or the topo-3.4.2! app under wine.
Either way, I noticed on the Topo! website that there was now a (Windows) CD
update to version 4.0 and then a downloadable upgrade to 4.2. The CD update
depends on a previously installed version between 2.6 and 3.4.3, but it was
cheap enough that I plunked down my money to give it a shot.
I'm re-opening the bug, but wouldn't recommend worrying about it until I can try
again w/ Topo!-4.x.

After reviewing the shdocvw.dll code, I think I may have stumbled on to why GSAK
no longer works. It appears that between 0.9.16 and 0.9.17 a bunch of
SHDOCVW_Moz* code was stripped out. I cannot be positive it is related to this,
however it seems appropriate given the type of error messages that are appearing
now, and I believe this is why things USED to work but don't anymore. I assume
that there was some move to correct something or shift of paradigm in some way.
I'll have to read the change logs. I'm unsure who reads the logs or when they
get read, but from the amount of code I saw removed, it appears like this is no
simple fix, but possibly when this does get read someone can explain the changes
a little here and if there are any fixes or workarounds that can be used until a
more permenant solution can be worked.

Joe, you really need to relax. You're running Wine from rpms that we don't
make. These rpms *probably* weren't compiled with the necessary libraries. And
to quote myself, I said "most likely fontforge or freetype-devel", not "you
don't have fontforge and freetype-devel installed and I know it!"
> pequod(~) wine --configure verbose
'Running configure' implies that you have the source code to wine, and you run
pequod(~) ./configure --verbose
to see what libraries you're missing. The fact that winecfg and wine crash
means there's a problem with your Wine rpm, and this bug should be marked
invalid because of that.
> ...and the fact that I uninstalled all traces of wine and then reinstalled
_all_ the wine*-0.9.20-1.fc5 rpms, means that if I am missing files, then the
rpm packaging is broken.
You are exactly right, Joe, your rpm packages are broken. Please file a bug
with your distro (Fedora). You can compile Wine from source and report back.
Here's a link for Fedora's bug tracking system:
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/bugzilla/index.cgi
Here's a link for downloading and compiling Wine from source:
http://winehq.org/site/docs/wineusr-guide/installing-wine-source
I'm marking this as invalid. If you compile from source, or the Fedora packages
are fixed, and the app is still not installed, then reopen the bug.

James Hawkins' theory would be a nice one, if it fit the facts, but it doesn't.
I _do_ have freetype-devel and fontforge installed, and the fact that I
uninstalled all traces of wine and then reinstalled _all_ the wine*-0.9.20-1.fc5
rpms, means that if I am missing files, then the rpm packaging is broken.
Just because the installer behaves strangely (double dialogs, etc.) and the app
crashes wine immediatley certainly doesn't mean that the bug is _fixed_! What
sort of reasoning could possibly make one believe that the behavior I see is in
any sense acceptable?
Moreover,
pequod(~) wine --configure verbose
crashed just like winecfg, etc.

You're getting the strange 'glyphs' because you don't have the necessary
packages installed, most likely fontforge or freetype-devel. Run configure
--verbose to see what you're missing. I'm marking this as fixed. Just because
the app crashes when you try to run it doesn't mean it didn't install correctly,
and looking at the output, and that you're running the installed executable, it
did install the app. Please open a new bug report if you can't run the app.

Ahem, running winecfg, after the exception got raised I was presented with a
dialog box filled with random glyphs, and clicked on the right hand button.
However, after I pushed submit when trying:
wine /media/CA_D01/setup.exe
just now, I noticed that I had been once again presented with the same dialog
box full of random glyphs, so for grins I clicked the left hand button, and
remarkably, the installation started. InstallShield quickly threw up a dialog
saying that it had finished and asking me to reboot, but before I could
respond, another InstallShield box appeared, covering the first saying that it
was installing. After the typical message/confirmation dialogs about using the
defaults, then a progress bar of the copying and installation, a second dialog
saying that it had finished and asking me to reboot appeared and I clicked
"yes, reboot now". The first finished/reboot? dialog persisted so I clicked yes
again. Unfortunately, the install appears to have failed, as wine crashes when
I try to run the just installed application. The attachment contains the
console output from this experiment.

Ok. I didn't get very far, using the wine-0.9.20-1.fc5 rpm's from Fedora Extras
(as pointed to from the WineHQ download page) on a up-to-date FC5 laptop.
I began by removing my .wine directory. First I tried to run winecfg, which
immediately crashed:
pequod(~) winecfg
wine: creating configuration directory '/home/joe/.wine'...
fixme:ole:ITypeInfo_fnRelease destroy child objects
wine: Unhandled page fault on read access to 0x003c002f at address 0x7eeaf1a7
(thread 0009), starting debugger...
wine: wineprefixcreate failed while creating '/home/joe/.wine'.
Then, after checking that winecfg didn't leave behind any wreckage, I tried:
wine /media/CA_D01/setup.exe
but the result was the same:
wine: creating configuration directory '/home/joe/.wine'...
fixme:ole:ITypeInfo_fnRelease destroy child objects
wine: Unhandled page fault on read access to 0x003c002f at address 0x7eeaf1a7
(thread 0009), starting debugger...
Perhaps when i have some time, I'll give uninstalling the rpms and building wine
from cvs a shot. Sigh.

Concerning your original report:
* The file chooser is accessible.
* The installation is complete.
* Manually entering a new directory still does not work.
On your second report:
* Selecting just "Register Extensions" and "Utility Scripts" still leaves
pythonw.exe not installed.
There are four bugs here, and half of them are fixed. There should only be one
bug per bug report. We can either reopen this bug and mark it invalid, or leave
it as fixed and you can open new, specific bugs that still remain with Git/CVS.

Do you have a GF2-FX? Try this.
>From Roderick:
"Users of Geforce-GeforceFX cards can improve the performance of StarCraft a lot
(starting from Wine 0.9.19 or Wine CVS from August 1st or later) by adding some
new registry options. Set the option
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Programs\Wine\Direct3D\DirectDrawRenderer to 'opengl' (if the
Direct3D key doesn't exist add it). Further you need to set the option
'Direct3D\RenderTargetLockMode' to 'readtex'.
The rendering performance should be VERY fast in 24bit mode now, it should reach
DGA speeds. In the near future I will add similar fixes for other cards to
improve performance but the boost will never be as big as for these old nvidia
cards using GL_EXT_paletted_texture support. "
"BTW note that the options I provided are now set for all applications, the
options won't work fine for all apps yet so add some application specific
options. (HKCU\Software\Wine\AppDefaults\starcraft.exe\Direct3D) "
If you do not have such a card, other solutions are to run X in the same bit
depth the game requires.
Old 2d games are going slow by default because wine uses software surfaces. Some
acceleration is possible using the opengl backend.

*If* the issue is the extra uniform / constant, it's not so much that the app
can't use the extra constant, but the fact that our constants array is now too
large. It seems to depend on the card / drivers whether the compiler counts the
number of referenced uniforms / constants or the number of declared ones. A
+d3d_shader log + knowing what gfx card is used would confirm / reject this
pretty quickly.

Ah, I assume this happens because I use an extra uniform which can't be used
any more by the game, and the card complains that there are too many uniforms
used...
Using an additional uniform is not necessary, and I sent a hacky patch for
that some time ago. I will see if I can send a proper patch for that later on
today or tomorrow.

This ensures that the package manager knows about it and doesn't replace it when

crash confirmed with wine 0.9.20 and 0.9.15 (i use both)
I did not have this problem with fresh KDE-free Ubuntu.
I'm quite sure that it appeared first, after i installed my only KDE-App
(kregexp) which had the basic KDE stuff as dependency
i fixed it (like Adrian did) with:
------------------------------------------
cd /usr/lib/wine
sudo mv winearts.drv.so winearts.drv.so.2
and
cd /usr/local/lib/wine
sudo mv winearts.drv.so winearts.drv.so.2

OK - please bear with me while I try to track this down (Never played with the
shaders before.)
The line which appear to cause the program to "break" is shown below. Commenting
this line, means everything works (as well as it did before the patch)
* OpenGL coordinates specify the center of the pixel while d3d coords
specify
* the corner. For that reason a translation is done with the projection
matrix,
* which sets the offsets to move in the w coords of the matrix(see
glTranslate manpage)
* Add the w coordinates to x and y, this avoids the need for a full matrix
* multiplication. The matrix is set up in drawprim.c, primitiveInitState.
*/
shader_addline(&buffer, "ADD result.position.x, TMP_OUT.x,
PROJECTIONX.w;\n"); // <----THIS LIKE CAUSES THE ISSUE!!
shader_addline(&buffer, "ADD result.position.y, TMP_OUT.y,
PROJECTIONY.w;\n");
Sorry about the multiple posts - just trying to give as much info as possible.

I think the wrong developer has been added - the issue was not caused by
bc66d7edde877877ef7f601926520fc2e3209a43 but by
bc449ca31fbd4a97ef1a06cabbfb2787e2ea6ca1 (first one was a red herring).
Developer should be Author: Stefan Dösinger <stefan(a)codeweavers.com> I think.
Been working on identifying what breaks it. This change breaks it.

Confirmed that bc449ca31fbd4a97ef1a06cabbfb2787e2ea6ca1 is the commit that
breaks EQ2.
Running the following:
git reset --hard origin
git revert bc449ca31fbd4a97ef1a06cabbfb2787e2ea6ca1
and then building and running EQ2 worked (as well as it did before breaking).

I found {91814ec1-b5f0-11d2-80b9-00104b1f6cea} is referring to ISetupCABFile
typelib (or so). This could related to InstallShield problems in Wine. Maybe
installing native DCOM and overriding "ole32,oleaut32,rpcrt4=n" would help as a
workaround:
