I think this has been fixed with newer versions of wine. Try it and I think it
will work.

With current CVS/GIT CS:S crashes right before showing a menu. All the standard
things to avoid such a crash (no pixel shaders, dxlevel 60) do not help.
Regression testing identified the following patch to be the culprit:

wine ASIO driver
Here is a simple wine ASIO driver using Jack as the hardware device. This is
just a proof of concept at this point put out there for comments. Please
review it and give me feedback.
This driver works in playback mode and has been tested with
http://www.magma.ca/~gtaylor/ASIOTestSigGen.htm. Capture mode has not been
tested. Full duplex mode has been tried but didn't work for me.

Summary: wine and alsa do not work
Product: Wine
Version: 0.9.19.
Platform: Other
OS/Version: Linux
Status: UNCONFIRMED
Severity: major
Priority: P2
Component: wine-binary
AssignedTo: wine-bugs(a)winehq.org
ReportedBy: kain(a)teamclerks.net
Winecfg usually breaks upon selecting ALSA under the sounds tab. Additionally,
if one DOES get winecfg to accept ALSA under the sounds tab, all half-life games
(and mods) will not load. They will have the steam loading screen appear,
disappear, and then the screen will be resized (if necessary) and no game will
appear, but it will be active. You can alt-tab between them, but there will
never be any graphics or sound output from the game. Hence, the only way to end
the game is to kill the Steam.exe.

I've experienced this problem before.
I bet you set your sounds to Alsa right? Switch it back to OSS (this shitty one
that chops your voice transmition and delays your sounds by 20ms) and Bob's yer
uncle.
