Summary: Aura aborts silently on startup
Product: Wine
Version: CVS
Platform: Other
URL: http://www.adventurecompanygames.com/tac/aura/index.html
OS/Version: other
Status: NEW
Severity: normal
Priority: P2
Component: wine-misc
AssignedTo: wine-bugs(a)winehq.org
ReportedBy: dank(a)kegel.com
aura "Fate of the Ages"'s installer does nothing
if you run setup.exe from the cd-rom, but
installs ok if you use
msiexec /i AuraInstallerEN.msi
There are no progress bars (see bug 6171?), and it
doesn't ask you about disks 2 and 3, but it seems
to complete.
But when you try to run the installed Aura1.exe
(after you put Audio "Hardware Acceleration" to "Emulation"),
it dies after a couple seconds, right after switching the
screen to black. The console shows:
fixme:d3d:IWineD3DDeviceImpl_GetAvailableTextureMem (0x1be740) : stub,
simulating 64MB for now, returning 64MB left
wine: Unhandled page fault on read access to 0x00000000 at address 0x43e815
(thread 000e), starting debugger...

Aura "Fate of the Ages" doesn't show
progress bars nor even update the installer
window during installation, which is disconcerting.

Haven't checked to see if the demo has the same problem.

I've had a look at this and the bug is not in my patch; the patch enables a code
path that is trashing the linked list that holds the dialog controls.

With 0.9.30, I'm still seeing an installation failure.
The installer aborts with the dialog
Error Number: 0x80040706
Description: Object reference not set
Setup will now terminate.
http://wiki.winehq.org/InstallShield suggests the whole
log is needed to diagnose these, so I'll attach one.
These are often COM errors, so I'm changing the category.

Hi,
I had tried running it as root too, but it's the exact same problem. It prints:
wine: creating configuration directory '/root/.wine/'...
then creates a new subdirectory ".wine-somethingrandom" and hangs there forever.
I've read about people having the exact same problem on different versions of
Fedora Core too (me I'm on a spin-off of Mandrake), so it is not specific to the
Mandrake/Mandriva package. There is really a problem, the program is either
looping or endlessly waiting for something in particular.
I used to have (probably 2-3 years ago) a working installation of WINE, then
I've been a while without using it, now I need it back but I really can't get
the newer versions to work.
Thank you very much for anything you can do!
