+relay,+commctrl trace for 1.5b
Well the attached trace shows that InitCommonControlsEx() _is_ being called,
but it is called with a null parameter (line 1482). From the same code you
linked to, you can see that no trace will be printed when called with a null.
So I guess the next question is what does WinXP/Win2K do with the null
argument?

*
Interesting. I've been having a problem since the ntdll commit with even
simple test applications crashing in something to do with thread management.
*
Threading is another problem I've run into recently, although I don't think
it's the same issue you're having. As it's a bit unrelated to this bug, you
may want to open a seperate bug report, if one isn't made already.
*
The terrible sound quality was a separate issue; I spent a long time during
the summer of my SoC project trying to improve it. As far as I could tell,
the problem was at DirectSound or deeper; I stopped digging after a week or so
to focus on the primary part of my project.
*
Yes, DSound or something related is a problem spot for me too. Most drivers
will crash in DSound's mixer with an 8KB buffer the DSound Renderer tries to
use, due to a buffer over-read (except OSS with Full acceleration, which I
think bypasses DSound's mixer). A 16KB buffer seems to work without crashing.
*
Was adding an mpeg stream splitter sufficient to get audio working? If you
need help testing your patches, I'd be glad to help.
*
There were other bugs, namely that quartz would only attempt to use the first
filter found and ACMWrapper was using uninitialized memory, both of which now
fixed, but the missing built-in mpeg-1 stream splitter was a big problem.
There's still a remaining problem that quartz will only use the async source
file reader filter instead of the mp3 source file reader that some codec packs
install, but using that returns bad media type info, and even native
quartz.dll won't handle it. It's not essential though as mp3s can still play
through the stream splitter and acmwrapper (which in turn uses winemp3.acm).
The last remaining "bad" problem is that after fixing a few more ref counting
bugs, when a filtergraph is stopped it'll release the filters while the
processing thread is still trying to process the pins. I fix that by holding
the critical section when the pins are processed, and it locks up sometimes
when trying to stop the stream, so I'm currently investigating that.
I'll get patches up for testing as soon as I get things organised.
*
I implemented support for MP3 using FFMPEG as part of my SoC project; if
you're interested in what I did, a tarball of my test applications and patches
is at http://people.clemson.edu/~sagarm/soc.tgz.
*
IIRC, Alexandre would rather not use external libs like this if possible. You
may want to talk to him about it. I personally don't mind, although it'll be a
bit tricky to match the filters that native quartz uses, including their
input/output, to all run through ffmpeg.

I'm trying to find the ideal settings/modes to run M$ Pinball Arcade, and I've
almost got it perfect, but I've run into a brick wall now. Generally, my
problems seem a bit worse than any others I've seen thus far...
My normal display is 2048x1536 24bpp on an AMD 64x2 3800+ machine with 1GB RAM
and an NV6800 card with the official binary driver, running Kubuntu Feisty (X
7.2.0, wine 0.9.31). Wine is configured to simulate a Windows 2000 install
with a virtual desktop of 1024x768, with hardware pixel shader support enabled.
If I run Xnest and request an 8bppmode, it refuses to start, claiming it can't
find the "desired default visual" (or something like that), despite a valid
8bpp mode being present in my xorg.conf.
If I run the game through VNC with just the right settings, I can get what
seems to be a normal 8bpp display, but the refresh rate is far too low to be
playable (maybe 10 fps).
If I run the game on a normal 8bpp xorg session with something like twm for a
window manager, with the default PseudoColor visual, the color map switches
when the game window gains/loses focus like it should, but the colors are
garbled regardless of what has focus, yet winecfg and regedit display their
colors properly when I try those in this mode.
If I run the game in that same mode, but without a window manager, the color
map never gets properly configured and I end up with a severely restricted
color set (maybe 8 or so colors and otherwise mostly black) in both winecfg/
regedit and in the game, regardless of what window has focus.
8bpp with Truecolor or DirectColor results in a black window/screen - pretty
much the same thing I get if I were to just run wine on 15, 16, or 24 bpp
(except that there is no message on the controlling terminal about not being
able to switch to 8bpp).
If I run the game in 8bpp with the StaticColor visual, I get what looks like a
7bpp screen (128 or so colors) but the game is otherwise playable. I can tell
that there are still too few colors by comparing against a real Windows box;
smooth color transitions are roughly twice as fine on Windows as on Wine, but
still clearly 8bpp.
8bpp with the StaticGrey visual gives me what looks like a full 8bpp 256-
greyscale screen (transitions between "colors" appear to be fairly smooth), but
I can't be 100% sure about this one.

If I remove the InitCommonControlsEx() call, the program will crash on Windows XP.
So I tried something else: call InitCommonControls() instead. On Windows XP, the
barebone program runs just fine, but on Wine, I get the error message you
initially described. Could this be what's happening?

I wouldn't call this fixed unless it works without installing extra stuff,
with the newest wine version. (Unless there is a mutual reason for the app to
require the extra software. e.g. outlook express won't work without internet
explorer)
I could understand the need for the Arial font, but not dcom, mfc and ie.
Winetools, ies4linux, and simmilar tools are not supported because they add a
lot of Microsoft Windows DLLs and overrides although wine has its own
implementations.

Not really, I'm just working with a program in which I'm interested. Given what
Dan Kegel said above, I'm leaning towards the lack of the init being the problem
with the new version. Given that, I'd think all that's necessary is a test
program that just creates the datetime control w/o init -- if this works on
windows, then that might be it.
In talking with the developer, he said there was a change in the winver variable
at one time to target win2k instead of 98. Could this cause a lack of a call to
init?

Setting the second parameter to NULL returns the C locale. By my reading of the
manpage, setlocale() will not respect environment variables at all unless called
with an empty string:
If locale is "", each part of the locale that should be modified is set
according to the environment variables. The details are implementation
dependent. For glibc, first (regardless of category), the environment
variable LC_ALL is inspected, next the environment variable with the
same name as the category (LC_COLLATE, LC_CTYPE, LC_MESSAGES, LC_MONE‐
TARY, LC_NUMERIC, LC_TIME) and finally the environment variable LANG.
The first existing environment variable is used. If its value is not a
valid locale specification, the locale is unchanged, and setlocale()
returns NULL.
and
If locale is NULL, the current locale is only queried, not modified.
On startup of the main program, the portable "C" locale is selected as
default. A program may be made portable to all locales by calling set‐
locale(LC_ALL, "" ) after program initialization, by using the values
returned from a localeconv() call for locale-dependent information, by
using the multi-byte and wide character functions for text processing
if MB_CUR_MAX > 1, and by using strcoll(), wcscoll() or strxfrm(),
wcsxfrm() to compare strings.
Therefore, if wine merely calls setlocale(LC_*, NULL), it is incorrect. It must
call locale(LC_ALL, "") during initialization.

To overcome this problem you need to install some components to Wine.
Use WineTools to install them (I use version 0.9.12).
You can get WineTools here: http://www.von-thadden.de/Joachim/WineTools/
In the "Base Setup" menu install:
1. "TrueType Font Arial"
2. "DCOM98"
3. "Microsoft Foundation Clases 4.0"
4. "Internet Explorer 6.0 SP1" (twice, if needed)
Tada... Battle.net works and you can join games with Wine
IOD
I posted a picture to prove it works on battle.net here:

However the locale in question is one which I manually generated. Indeed.
running LC_ALL=ja_JP.UTF-8 vim gets me japanese UI text; as does
LC_ALL=ja_JP.UTF-8 wine notepad in wine 0.9.24. However this is apparently not
supported in wine 0.9.32.
Indeed, running locale -a (Write names of available locales) prints:
bd@shion:~$ locale -a
C
en_AU.utf8
en_BW.utf8
en_CA.utf8
en_DK.utf8
en_GB.utf8
en_HK.utf8
en_IE.utf8
en_IN
en_NZ.utf8
en_PH.utf8
en_SG.utf8
en_US.utf8
en_ZA.utf8
en_ZW.utf8
ja_JP.eucjp
ja_JP.utf8
POSIX
However even matching case exactly with LC_ALL=ja_JP.utf8 wine notepad does not
work in wine 0.9.32.

It's not really a regression, just a different behavior. Wine used to accept any
random locale string that you threw at it, but it now requires the locale to be
supported by the C library. That's the only way to ensure proper
interoperability between Wine and other Unix libraries.

I've tried the help decompiler on the indows 32-bit API help file and it just
produces an RTF file that's unreadable by both AbiWord and OpenOffice. I've tried
processing the help decompiler's output with Microsoft's HTML Help Workshop, in an
attempt to convert the .hlp file to a .chm file, but that failed too. I've tried
Herdsoft's Help to RTF, but it fails to compile on amd64. I've tried ABC Amber HLP
Converter but it crashes when trying to read such a large help file. Unfortunately,
there aren't too many other options for converting .hlp files, and they've all
failed to work with this large file. And there are virtually no other options for
directly viewing .hlp files, so at this point winhelp.exe is really my only hope.
And I agree, winhelp should be a lot faster, and have indexing and search
capabilities to be useful for anything but tiny help files.

Interesting. I've been having a problem since the ntdll commit with even simple
test applications crashing in something to do with thread management. The
terrible sound quality was a separate issue; I spent a long time during the
summer of my SoC project trying to improve it. As far as I could tell, the
problem was at DirectSound or deeper; I stopped digging after a week or so to
focus on the primary part of my project.
Was adding an mpeg stream splitter sufficient to get audio working? If you need
help testing your patches, I'd be glad to help.
I implemented support for MP3 using FFMPEG as part of my SoC project; if you're
interested in what I did, a tarball of my test applications and patches is at
http://people.clemson.edu/~sagarm/soc.tgz.

The culprit is ALSA. As long as ALSA is not selected in winecfg, it starts up

Summary: DipTrace 1.3 fails to start.
Product: Wine
Version: CVS
Platform: Other
URL: http://www.diptrace.com/downloads/diptrace_en.exe
OS/Version: Linux
Status: UNCONFIRMED
Severity: normal
Priority: P2
Component: wine-kernel
AssignedTo: wine-bugs(a)winehq.org
ReportedBy: mail(a)science.su
DupTrace is useful engineering software (for PCB design and such). But
unfortunately when I try to run DipTrace, it gives me unhandled page fault at
early stage of its initialization. After quick look into this problem I suppose
this problem is related to bug in kernel32 implementation (see debug log
for details).
To reproduce this bug, download this program, install it and then try to run
Pcb.exe.
You can download demo-version here (~21 MiB):
http://www.diptrace.com/downloads/diptrace_en.exe
You also can download "light" freeware version (~9 MiB):
http://www.diptrace.com/downloads/dipwl_free.exe
It has same bug.

Catia uses services. These are not supported by Wine, so it won't work.
Besides, Catia is such a big piece of software, there's no way in hell there are
no major bugs so you would be able to use it properly :/

I did a few more tests ... dialing up a server in Steam directly, then
launching Counter-Strike will also only show the background but doesn't do
much more then. I also dragged a few windows over it and notices that the
window does not redraw itself (so apparently, it hangs somewhere). I also
tried this in windowed mode (which I didn't do before), and it does the same.
However, I did notice some output by Wine on the console:

If the point is the large files, then winhelp should be rewritten completely.
It process them VERY slow, unlike windows native one.
If you really need to view them fast and perform search, you may try
decompressors like http://www.geocities.com/mwinterhoff/helpdeco.htm

I tried it only in windowed mode, can't test it in fullscreen as it doesn't
occur anymore. I think it could have something to do with the relative position
of the mouse to the window, as the amount off down looked like the height of
the titlebar. But when I wanted to verify, it didn't occur. Maybe if I have
time later this week I will return to the original wine version/settings and
retry and make a bug report on it.
Thanks for your help anyway.

Summary: Spellforce won't install because of ASPI error
Product: Wine
Version: 0.9.32.
Platform: PC
URL: http://appdb.winehq.org/appview.php?iAppId=2627
OS/Version: Linux
Status: UNCONFIRMED
Severity: normal
Priority: P2
Component: wine-binary
AssignedTo: wine-bugs(a)winehq.org
ReportedBy: frans.kool(a)gmail.com
While trying to install SpellForce
(http://appdb.winehq.org/appview.php?iAppId=2627) I run into a unsupported
IOCTL in cdrom ("CDROM_DeviceIoControl Unsupported IOCTL 2d1400 (type=2d
access=0 func=500 meth=0)"). This happens when running Windows 2000/4.0/3.5
When I try to run in Windows 98 mode, this message does not appear, but
instead I get an ASPI message:
"fixme:aspi:SendASPI32Command ASPI: Partially implemented SC_HA_INQUIRY for
adapter 0.
err:aspi:SCSI_GetDeviceName Could not open HKLM\HARDWARE\DEVICEMAP\Scsi\Scsi
Port 0\Scsi Bus 0\Target Id 1\Logical Unit Id 0"
It tries to scan through all target IDs from 0 to 7 for both Bus 0 and 1,
after which the installation aborts.
I think this is probably related to a safedisc protection (see the CDROM ref
above), but under windows 98 it seems to be something else. Perhaps this could
be a way to install anyway, regardless of this copy protection?
If I can be of any assistance or need to test specifics, please let me know.
Frans Kool.

Luke: Actually, I found that the crash and level loading problem (by that I mean
HL2 freezing at a black screen where I should see the map) were due to what
seems to be really bad vertex shader problems in fglrx drivers, going all the
way back to as old as 8.27.10 (possibly even further, I only went this far.)
Oddly enough, I get different crashes depending on which fglrx version I use.
But I found out today that HL2 will work great (even the intro video works :-)
if I turn vertex shaders off completely, though that kind of ruins it as the
flashlight doesn't work.
I guess the bottom line here is that fglrx *sucks* big time... :-(

Yes, it will fail in each Wie version until it's fixed in the FreeBSD
specific part of Wine code or (possibly) on FreeBSD side.
Since these tests work perfectly under Linux nobody of Wine/Linux developers
is going to spend time looking at it.
As I have said:
It's up to FreeBSD community to help fixing appropriate functionality in Wine.

patch applies against wine-0.9.32? (or better yet, wine-git)

Patch to fix bug 892
This commit fixes bug 892 which requests that x86 processors use CPUID to
detect processor features rather than use codes paths for multiple operating
systems. It does best guess compile-time checking for POSIX functions and
constants, and should be very portable across POSIX operating systems. I have
tested this code and receive the same results as in wine-0.9.27 and
wine-0.9.29, and checked against /proc/cpuinfo, and the results seem to be
correct.

I get simmilar problem with PITy2006NG
(http://appdb.winehq.org/appview.php?iAppId=3095).
Every time I want to print page I get:
"fixme:psdrv:PSDRV_EndPage Already ended a page?"
and get printed empty pages.
Wine versions I've tried: 0.9.30, 0.9.31, 0.9.32 and both physical (direct and
network) and virtual printers with CUPS.
On the application forum I've read that there is regression in Wine printing
since 0.9.28 - some people confirm that printing works in Wine prior to 0.9.28
(for example 0.9.27).
It's very important to quickly fix this problem because without printing this
app is not functional and timeline for sending tax documents from this app is
April 2007.

Summary: Wine tests fail under FreeBSD and other problems

Platform: PC

I've been working on trying to resolve another issue with WINE & FreeBSD (Bug
3551), and in doing so have run into several other possibly related problems.
Using the latest 0.9.32, I ran "make test" in the main wine tree, and it ran
fine for a minute or so, until it reached this point:
../../../tools/runtest -q -P wine -M crypt32.dll -T ../../.. -p
crypt32_test.exe .so cert.c && touch
cert.ok
fixme:crypt:CryptVerifyCertificateSignatureEx unimplemented for NULL signer
fixme:crypt:CryptEncodeObjectEx 0: unimplemented
Here it "hung" for almost an hour, with CPU usage at 100% before it finally
crashed. Here's what I found in the kernel messages:
Mar 5 11:39:13 pcbsd-8206 kernel: See the i386_set_ldt man page for more info
Mar 5 11:39:13 pcbsd-8206 kernel: Warning: pid 91144 used static ldt
allocation
Mar 5 11:39:13 pcbsd-8206 kernel: See the i386_set_ldt man page for more info
Mar 5 11:40:15 pcbsd-8206 kernel: pid 95718 (wine-pthread), uid 0: exited on
signal 11
There were a TON of the set_ldt errors reported, before the final crash of
wine-pthread. When I run other programs in wine, these set_ldt errors also
appear.
I ran across this thread online also, not sure if it'll help in tracking down
this error:

A similar thing happens with the demo, but having the audio files in place does
not seem to make a difference. Also, the stub error
(WTSQuerySessionInformationW) does not look to me like it is part of the
problem, I think that stub is actually for doing debugging (returns things like
the application name and OS build and such). The message appears to occur a few
moments after the actual crash, and if you wait (a REALLY long time) a "submit a
bug report" dialog will show up.

All the objects that can be interacted with in Half life 2 appear very bright
(washed out) unless I am currently pushing or holding them or if an AI is
holding or pushing the item or when I shine a flashlight on them.
Also, some rocks and building parts have the problem too, but not all of them.
I have tried the following combos in attempting to fix the bug.
Pixel shader: Hardware mode - bug exists
Pixel shader: Emulator - bug exists - game slower
Pixel shader with "UseGLSL"="enabled": bug exists
Pixel shader with "UseGLSL"="enabled" and Pbuffer: bug still exists.

The "bad class name" would be expected if the app

Maybe native doesn't require that anymore, though.
We should probably add a conformance test to see.

Ok, the interesting bit is in a function called SetExecuteBufferDefaults in
d3d_render.cpp
You can follow it in the trace right up until it calls SetExecuteBuffer, where
out of nowhere, a call to EndScene turns up.
The return value from EndScene changes the behaviour from here on, despite the
fact that in the entire AvP code the EndScene return value is never used, except
to print a message using LOGDXERR.
Weird.
Were it not for the fact that _nowhere_ in the AvP code is EndScene called
without a BeginScene first, i'd be suspecting a problem with handling of the
so-called "RasterThread"

So, if you start windowed or start full-screen then it works, but if you switch
between the two then you lose the mouse? That may actually be related to how
the SetCursorProperties call deletes the cursor, have you applied the patch in

open the date/time editor (double clicking upper left corner of the main
window), the program crashes with the following output:
err:win:CreateWindowExW bad class name L"SysDateTimePick32"
err:win:CreateWindowExW bad class name L"SysDateTimePick32"
As far as I can tell, this is not a problem on WindowsXP. I'm not sure I can
distribute the binary for this version, but can anyone give me an idea of what
kind of debug traces would be useful for tracking down the problem?

fixme:font:GetFontUnicodeRanges (0x125c, 0x35bccc4): stub
so apparently i first have to update to current git. Will upgrade first and then
test , and report back

The papyrus 10.5 demo seems to work ok at first glance,
but when I tried switching font size, I then couldn't
type because the main window had lost focus. Clicking
on the main window again changed the font size back
to what it had been before! The only way to get font
size change to work is to do it on a selection, then
click back inside the selection.

Looking at +font | grep -i arial, I see

i.e. arial italic and arial bold italic both have

only showing the family name? (I don't really know fonts,
and I haven't even tried the app under Windows, so I'm
not even sure this is a wine problem, but it does seem annoying, at least...)

Yesterday I do some test downto 0.9.21 and found that demo version always failed

Perhaps what is working was full version. Unfortunate my CD is damaged, so I

When the pause function is used the disassembly window goes blank and can not be used
until the process is restarted. The same thing happens when you attach to an already
running process, and when an application exits.
Please note that the pause function is not the same as the functions to step in to or
over modules, which work just fine. When OllyDbg pauses by itself on a breakpoint it
works fine too. It's only when the pause function itself is explicitly activated that
the disassembly window goes blank.
