Ok, thank you for explaining.
I don't know much PIDLs and find it rather hard to find out what that really is.
Is it a hard task to add support for full PIDLs?

For the record, I'm not running a game, it's an application. But the reason I'm
running this application ironically is just to test Wine compatibility, so not
a real problem for me, I can just drop Wine support entirely and move on ;-)
It's a bit annoying that something that worked fine before is broken now, but
then I'm a professional software developer, too, I can understand the problem
with time and priorities... so anyway, thanks for your time.

First of all: You are right regarding the wine documentation. It is in a
pretty bad shape and is really outdated. Patches are welcome of course :-) . A
first step would be a patch to improve the ERR messages in ddraw, d3d8 and
d3d9 to suggest checking opengl.
I do not buy the newbie argument. All recent Linux distros do ship a working
opengl library by default. The only real exception is Gentoo, and I do not
consider Gentoo a newbie distro. Furthermore I don't think that running a game
over a remote link like the reporter did is something newbies do regularly.
Also I recommend you to read the Gentoo documentation, especially the thing
about "eselect opengl". The old system argument isn't really valid either. For
one part see below. And even if its because of opengl beeing needed for some
reason, there is no hardware out there which runs current beginner's distros
but does not have at least a basic 3d accelerator. (Yes, you can run things
like Gentoo on old hardware, I myself have an up to date Gentoo system on my
old 120 mhz notebook. But that isn't something people new to Linux will do
either)
Regarding the slowness: Is it really because of opengl? I suspect it is
because of the asynchronous surface updates(bug 5526). There used to be a hack
in the old ddraw implementation for that, but Alexandre didn't accept it back
as is. For properly synchronizing such surface updates the whole DirectX code
has to be synchronized - or at least before I see a point in trying to send
the patch again. Volunteers welcome.
I won't stop anyone from implementing lazy linking against libGL.so. Its just
that I personally won't do that anytime soon because there are other things to
do which I consider higher priority.

Problem seems to be that the cursor is not re-centered in the window. You can
freely move the cursor out of the windows, stopping the character's rotation.
(It'll also stop if it hits the edge of the screen, if in fullscreen).
Sometimes, if you try and push the cursor past one boundary, you will be able to
get the cursor farther in the opposite direction.

OK I got it to "work."
Here's how to get Starcraft etc. to run with the x11 driver on a system without
OpenGL (remember, these games don't even need hardware acceleration.)
_In this order_:
- Make sure you have libGL on your system (this is just a crutch for wine's
detection process, which is obviously buggy.)
-Make sure libGL.so.1 is in your PATH. I had to create a symlink:
ln -s usr/lib/opengl/xorg-x11/lib/libGL.so.1.2 /usr/lib/libGL.so.1
- Recompile wine with opengl support (Gentoo users must enable the opengl
useflag - it's no longer optional)
- Reinstall wine
- As the FIRST THING, run winecfg; this will tell you that OpenGL doesn't work
and thus it is "disabled" (I never found out what exactly this "disabling" did.)
This needs to be done before running any other apps.
- Set the aforementioned magic registry key
- Reinstall all apps (games) from scratch (full Baldur's Gate install + patching
etc, grr.)
Then it magically worked. Not very well (bad performance compared to wine
0.9.8), but the games run.
Regarding your comment Stefan, here's what I have to say.
a) It's just not working out of the box. It would not work for a newbie or
computer illiterate person with an old laptop.
b) It is not clear that you have to compile wine with openGL support (and thus
you need libGL.) There's no warning. No documentation.
c) I don't like to be told off with "It works for X percent of standard users,
so your complaint is invalid." That's not good practice, it's a cheap way out.
It's what Windows does.
Some things I would expect:
- Clearly state that libGL (or Mesa) is a dependency of Wine; declare that Wine
practically needs 3D acceleration even for 10 year old Direct Draw apps
- Clearly state that users who have no 3D capable hardware should keep using
wine 0.9.8 (or Windows.)
In my experience the Mesa software GL substitute is unbelievably slow, so that's
not an option.
A final remark: The hoops I had to jump through to get those ten-year-old DDraw
games working with wine 0.9.31 remind me of the typical Windows experience.
Congrats on emulating that as well.
You're eager to close this bug and move on; go ahead and do so. Mark it as WONT
FIX and declare it a feature.

Hello,
from what i've seen looking at java jni code it basically boils down to
following (took the code directly from java impl. into a small C test program):
Java_sun_awt_Win32GraphicsDevice_getDefaultPixIDImpl calls
---> Java_sun_awt_Win32GraphicsDevice_isPixFmtSupported calls
---> int max = ::DescribePixelFormat(hDC, (int)pixFmtID,
sizeof(PIXELFORMATDESCRIPTOR), &pfd);
params:
hDC = ::GetDC( ::GetDesktopWindow()) (desktop hdc)
pixFmtId = 1
output:
--- native windows ---
DescribePixelFormat(): max=100, pfd.cColorBits=32, pfd.iPixelType=0,
pfd.dwFlags=0x34
Java_sun_awt_Win32GraphicsDevice_getDefaultPixIDImpl() returns 1
--- native windows ---
--- wine linux ---
DescribePixelFormat(): max=1, pfd.cColorBits=32, pfd.iPixelType=0, pfd.dwFlags=0x25
Java_sun_awt_Win32GraphicsDevice_getDefaultPixIDImpl() returns 0
--- wine linux ---
return "0" means no suitable Pixel Format id found -> exception thrown.
The problem is the "flags" field in pixel format descriptor.
Windows returns 0x34: PFD_SUPPORT_OPENGL | PFD_SUPPORT_GDI | PFD_DRAW_TO_WINDOW
Wine returns 0x25: PFD_SUPPORT_OPENGL | PFD_DRAW_TO_WINDOW | PFD_DOUBLEBUFFER
The "required" flags field in that JRE implementation is: PFD_SUPPORT_GDI |
PFD_DRAW_TO_WINDOW
Basically: ((pfd.dwFlags & REQUIRED_FLAGS) == REQUIRED_FLAGS) to satisfy
function call (valid pixel id)
For windows this condition is satisfied - for the wine case not (PFD_SUPPORT_GDI
bits missing).
The wine X11 driver doesnt honour this value in
wine/dlls/winex11.drv/opengl.c:X11DRV_DescribePixelFormat() and
X11DRV_ChoosePixelFormat().
Regards

This is actually what I call "a little dirty code". This happens as far as I
understand because child window doesn't update if it gets overdrawn. But in my
practice, including a lot of work with Lightwave and some other professional
software that uses Direct3D/OpenGL child windows this problem proved to be
minor and mostly cosmetic. Anyway, this is a lot better than working with
these programs in VMWare! Besides it shouldn't be very hard to fix this minor
bug later.

"Proper and correct solution will not be accepted, let's use hacks and
tricks!". I'm sorry, but I really don't understand this point of view. I can
understand this in case if we already have working hack with no regressions and
problems but we havn't and unlikely to have one. At least this is my
impression and also general opinion: hacks almost always introduce additional
problems or simply don't work in all cases and currently this is exactly the
case with Ulrich patches.
So why don't accept this patch? Personally I use it for very long time (since
it creation) already, run games, applications, professional software and see no
problems at all (except need to keep it in sync with current git and maybe a little dirty code but this unrelated and possible to fix). No performance
problems, no regressions - what else is needed? If I (or anyone else) miss any
problems related to using X child windows it would be good idea to post these
problem here, but my opinion for now that this patch works very well and
currently is only real solution.

The application doesn't call LVM_INSERTCOLUMN and that's why there are no
headers. Could you provide a WINEDEBUG=+message trace with the native comctl32.dll?

Hello,
decorated names usually come in form of:
?name[@][scope@]@parameters
For "name" and "scope" part there is no lower/uppercase distinction.
Certain parts in "parameters" (like operator name, data types, return type) are
uppercase-only.
For the rest there is nolower/uppercase distinction.
So i guess the supplied decorated name must be somehow invalid.
Please run wine with "WINEDEBUG=+msvcrt" to see what kind of decorated name is
supplied to undecorator function (__unDName() or __unDNameEx()).

>The text field that acts as a filter has a window timer installed that
>fires every 100 msec. When the timer fires, it checks to see if the
>text has changed since the last call and sends a custom window message
>(msg == 1001) to its parent window.
According to one of the Weatherscope developers, this is how the filtering works:
>When the parent window receives that message, it rebuilds the radar
>combo box using the same function it used when it was originally
>constructed. The only difference it that now it has a filter string to
>apply to the radar names. When we rebuild the combo box, we completely
>remove all of the items and add back the ones that match the filter
>string one at a time.
>So, as far as Win32 is concerned, there should be a WM_TIMER message
>firing on the text field's HWND about 10 times a second. A custom
>window message of 1001 should be sent to the radar dialog's HWND if the
>text was changed between successive timer messages. We use SendMessage
>to add and remove items from the combo box (CB_DELETESTRING to remove,
>CB_INSERTSTRING to add).
As far as I can tell from a +message,+edit,+combo trace, the WM_TIMER messages
stop being dispatched once one clicks in the line edit, and instead I see
WM_SYSTIMER messages being sent. After the aforementioned clicking around, the
WM_TIMER messages are sent again and filtering works. Anyone have _any_ idea
what could be going on here?

Hello,
supporting native API for kmode drivers doesnt make much sense.
The cpu-z kmode driver implements low level i/o throughput time measurements
using ring0 (privileged) instructions and some internal kmode apis (query
interrupt counters and the like).
Even if you support/emulate necessary native kmode apis, the driver code would
immediately cause SIGILL/SIGSEGVs due use of privileged instructions.

I've just tested localhost web interface sessions in eMule 0.47c with versions
of Wine going all the way back to 0.9.23 (which is 2 versions before the big
0.9.25 socket fix was released; see bug 3063) and every single one exhibits the
same broken behavior as I described in comment #5 and comment #10. For
thoroughness I also tried using an older version of eMule -- 0.47a -- and still
experienced the same results.
This would indicate that either localhost web interface sessions were broken all
along and I simply didn't notice it until recently (it's only 2 small GIFs,
somewhat easy to miss), or there's something new in my system configuration that
brought out the buggy behavior (Netfilter config in my kernel perhaps?).
So this disproves my suspicion in comment #13 -- the problem doesn't seem to be
a regression after all. So much for all that git-bisecting. :)

Right, .sys files are much harder to support than .dll files, we
generally don't even try.
I doubt they would need to load a driver in Linux; most of their
functionality can probably be gotten at via userspace already.
Somebody just needs to write a .dll that uses the linux kernel
interface to get at it all.
Better yet to simply rewrite the app for Linux, I suppose.

My impression is that submitting a patch to revert back

more likely to make it in.

Not a blocker.
This is a well-known limitation of Wine - Google reports many examples of it.
Fixing it has been listed as an idea for a GSoC project, but no takers yet.
A workaround might be installing and using native COM - see e.g. winetricks to
install dcom98.

Please post a link for the download of the installer you're using. I downloaded
the RFO installer from the site, and it installed fine. Also, how are you
running the installer? command line, winefile, etc?

With today's git and Mike's patch,
things seem a bit different; the only fixme's are
fixme:advapi:QueryServiceObjectSecurity 0x191928 4 0x33dac8 4 0x33dac4
fixme:dbghelp:MiniDumpWriteDump NIY MiniDumpWithHandleData
and there are no err's. Looking at the +relay log
it seems that the problem is related to "Adobe LM Service",
presumably their license manager / copy protection.
For what it's worth, you can see it repeatedly
trying to talk to the license manager with calls like this:

The lnk files created by Wine look mostly correct, but do not work.
I tried the following with Autohotkey:
FileCreateShortcut, c:\windows\notepad.exe, bar.lnk, c:\windows, "foo bar",
Test, , X, , 3
This should create a shortcut named bar.lnk that points to notepad.exe, with:
argument: "foo bar"
comment: "Test"
hotkey: Ctrl+Alt+X
that starts maximized.
When I copy the bar.lnk file to a Windows XP machine, Windows recognizes the
file as a shortcut. It has the correct comment, hotkey, and is set to start
maximized. The important thing that's missing is the pointer to the notepad.exe
target.

This is a problem already discussed in wine-users. There is a workaround
available to replace the JRE with a newer one during installation, but this
isn't useful for novice users. When I understood right, as there wasn't a real
solution found, I should report a bug. If else, simply close it.
The installer of SystemVision is mostly written in java and ships JRE 1.3.1
(Mentor seems not to care it's EOL) with it for this which is extracted and
called by a native windows installer. When the java part is called, the
following exception is thrown:

So we wont ever support loading the sys natively even, similar to what we do
with ie dplay.dll and dplayx.dll ? That sux cause this program is a great one
for overclockers and afaik there isnt a linux alternative..
What does adding wine support to their sdk do? Allow them to write a driver
that could theoretically be loaded by wine, or what?

Definitely happening only on first run, whether the program is launched from the
installer or not. At first I thought it was maybe the processing of the
database, so I played around with anything and everything I could find that
dealt with the database, and that didnt do it. Then I tried running it in
winedbg so I could set some breakpoints to find the problem, but it does a stack
dump right after the interface appears in call_window_proc. I'll file a
separate bug about that.
At any rate, I tried exiting the program all 3 ways to exit it (esc, clicking
the close button at the top right, and also doing file->exit) and all 3 result
in a crash on the first run after installing.

Diff between the full +bitmap,+winspool ERWin (successful) and BPWin
(unsuccessful) logs
I'm not sure if I did it right, but this compares both applications' behavior
when I try to print from them. ERWin makes it, BPWin does not.
It seems that at some point BPWin tries to reselect the default printer
(LEXMARKOptraT612) [diff line 5944] even after I instructed it to select the
other one (OptraT612) [diff lines 352 and 353].
I still couldn't figure out what happens next, except that ERWin can go past
that point while BPWin can't. The "bad" fixme is at [diff line 5954].
I hope this helps.

I retraced my steps from after install thru what I did on the first run and it
still wont crash. My guess is that something is not initialized/ created during
install and is during first run, right after you hit close but before the
program closes. Then whatever it is that gets done, is already there on
subsequent runs and that prevents the crash.

character in the TG, because that's the only thing I can actually do.
OFF-TOPIC:
By the way, I play in Sol server, who are you? :)

I think minibug is just a downloader for weatherbug, but for some reason when I
use this installer, weatherbug doesnt complain about missing IE6.
The issue: get minibug from
http://ww2.weatherbug.com/altdownload60.asp?dlid=100&ZCode=z5603&Email=&Zip…
After installing (dont install the toolbar, because it is useless under linux),
the weatherbug window is supposed to show up and then in a separate window you
are supposed to get prompted to register. Under wine, the weatherbug window
does not show up at all, but the registration screen does.
So you fill in the form, and pick who you want to see a one-time text/picture ad
from, and click continue a couple of times. Then you get to the last screen,
and it says to hit finish to finish out the registration. Heres where things
get weird. Under windows, when you hit Finish, the IE window closes and you are
left with just Weatherbug. In Linux, it goes to another page, that is blank,
instead of exiting the window, and if you click close then it opens firefox with
a registration failed window and some tips to get registration working.

I can confirm this bug.
The attachment shows the trace of mmio and avifile, when I was trying to open

shows up twice in the trace.

Patch to fix Dynamic C serial support
It seems the events are not being processed properly in the serial port
support. The workaround is to make wait_on() in serial.c wait for the event to
occur.
Note that the FTDI USB serial converter will not work directly, as it does not
support TIOCGICOUNT ioctl. I have also fixed the FTDI usb driver to work with
this if anyone is interested.
Download speed appears to be the same as running in win32, and processor
detection works.

DNS9 doesn't install (bug 6764), but the install fails late
enough that maybe the app will run. The first problem is
that it aborts with the dialog box

http://www.winehq.org/pipermail/wine-devel/2005-June/037481.html
mentioned a similar problem with dns7, and that got me thinking;
turns out it's referring to the file with a relative path,
and the problem goes away if you set the current directory to
c:\Program Files\Nuance\NaturallySpeaking9
and start the app with
wine Program/natspeak.exe
The next problem is it aborts with the dialog box

Summary: OnHotHey function in EasyUO doesn't work
Product: Wine
Version: 0.9.33.
Platform: PC
URL: http://www.easyuo.com/
OS/Version: other
Status: UNCONFIRMED
Severity: normal
Priority: P3
Component: wine-ipc
AssignedTo: wine-bugs(a)winehq.org
ReportedBy: zajec5(a)gmail.com
EasyUO is a powerfull tool that enables me to write scripts that help me to
play Ultima Online (which works great under Wine). It works in 90%, expect
OnHotKey function.
I asked developer if he could show a part of Delphi code that is used for this
function. He was so nice he did. There it is:
**********
function OnHotkey(KeyStr : String; Ctrl,Alt,Shift : Boolean) : Boolean;
var
VK : Cardinal;
begin
Result:=False;
VK:=GetVK(KeyStr);
if VK=0 then Exit;
if (Hi(GetAsyncKeyState(VK))<128) then Exit;
if Ctrl xor (Hi(GetAsyncKeyState(VK_CONTROL))>127) then Exit;
if Alt xor (Hi(GetAsyncKeyState(VK_MENU))>127) then Exit;
if Shift xor (Hi(GetAsyncKeyState(VK_SHIFT))>127) then Exit;
Result:=True;
end;
**********
He also gave us a little comment about it. Quote:
**********
GetVK isn't provided here, but it simply maps string names like "F1" to the
corresponding Windows VirtualKey constant. The Hi() function returns the most
significant byte.
Maybe the problem is the WINE implementation of GetAsyncKeyState. It might be
the format of the return value or the VK mapping table.
GetAsyncKeyState on MSDN:
http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/default.asp?url=/library/en-us/winui/winu…
windowsuserinterface/userinput/keyboardinput/keyboardinputreference/
keyboardinputfunctions/getasynckeystate.asp
I've uploaded a test application with just GetAsyncKeyState in it here:
http://www.easyuo.com/cheffe/asynckeytest.zip
In Delphi, values with a dollar sign in front are interpreted as hexadecimal.
So the value $74 is actually 116 which is the key F5.
A description of all available virtual keycodes is here:
http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/default.asp?url=/library/en-us/winui/WinU…
WindowsUserInterface/UserInput/VirtualKeyCodes.asp
When I press F5 on my WinXP, I get the a result value of $FFFF8000 or $FFFF8001
(if I keep the F5 button pressed down).
**********
This bug means that I can not detect when some key is pressed inside Ultima
Online window. As a result I can not for ex. bind healing my character under F1.

So this app still doesn't install for me. It comes so close...
When it prompts for the 2nd disc, you have to use 'wine eject'
to pop the disc out (not plain old eject, not pressing the drive button)
because setup.exe is still open. Fortunately, 'wine eject'
works well, and after inserting the 2nd disc and pressing 'retry',
all continues well... right up until the point where it runs
some custom action and aborts the install, seemingly near the end.
I'll attach the +msi log.

The application seems to run ok. The only thing I can not do so far is
load an existing project file. I get the following errors:

fixme:storage:StgCreateDocfile Transacted mode not implemented.
Does this sound familiar to anybody and/or does anybody have a
solution to fix this problem? Is there a workaround?
What would it take to implement the missing part?

I'll send the bug to wine-patches but I can't add a proper test case (I'm by no
means a win32 api expert). Also, at a quick glance it seems that the present
listview tests do not cover virtual listviews at all (understandable, they seem
to have a big implementation overhead).

One thing I noticed different is that you have the ntlm_auth error. I upgraded
my samba install to 3.0.25pre2 to get rid of that error, and so that might cause
the differences in our crashes, but Im not sure.

Im having different issues. Sounds like your config might be funky.
I get crashes in dbghelp, then IMVU dumps its crash log, and then the debugger
starts and I get a full backtrace, and get dropped back at the cmd line.

When you run the setup program you get a warning error message box come up but
with no title and no text. When you hit the ok button (the only button
available) a warning message box comes up too again with no title or message
(but has the error icon). Hitting ok on that seems to close the installer (no
other options).
Can't think of what to file this under, the log is virtually empty and the
installer says nothing, literally.

One additional comment: There seems to be an additional bug that causes the
sorting headers of the listview to disappear on login. However this can be
migitated by switching to local view and back once. After that, the headers
won't disappear any more, even when a new site is connected.

Fix for endless message loop between App and comctl32 DLL (Fixes FlashFXP 3.4)
Since this issue has not been fixed for ~3 years, I decided to spend some time
with WINE. The issue is caused by a message loop between the app and the
comctl32 listview code, when the listview is virtual (LVS_OWNERDATA).
See the comments in the patch.

Normally things like this would be minor as the error comes up after the
installation has finished, all files copied, past the point where it asks if
you'd like a shortcut (so basically at the VERY end) but the error window comes
up with its vague "There was an error" type message and it uninstalls the
game(!) leaving you with nothing.

This issue happens either with wine 0.9.33 (stable release) either with CVS wine
(wine-0.9.33-gcc578af).
I'm using the X Server with AIGLX option turned on. I tested also with AIGLX
turned off but the error is always the same.
The version of X server is 7.2.0 RC2
About xrandr, I don't know if this behaviour is normal or not.
If I use direct3d, WoW works even if the FPS is quite low.

According to appdb, people seem to have the game working for them, so I think it
could be a problem with your computer. It sounds like X is crashing, possibly
when it's switching video modes. Does the logs for X reveal anything? What
distro are you running and what graphics card/drivers are you using?
