------- Additional Comments From beg1689(a)gmail.com 2007-20-03 16:37 -------
Just wanted to confirm my problem, I finally had a chance to play around with
another computer and steam account, so I can be more specific now. It turns out
it is somehow specific to my account, though i haven't yet figured out why. My
brother also purchased Garry's Mod through steam, and for his account, it works.
I made some little screenies just for detail.
http://i21.photobucket.com/albums/b292/beg1689/windows.png - This is my steam
account in Windowz XP (through VMware)
http://i21.photobucket.com/albums/b292/beg1689/linux.png - This is my account
again, running through wine.
http://i21.photobucket.com/albums/b292/beg1689/josh.png - This is my brothers
account, on the same computer with the same fresh wine install.
These shots were taken in Ubuntu 6.10, Wine 0.9.33.
So my point is, for some strange reason Wine won't let ME specifically use my
games purchased through steam. Even though they obviously work, even in VMware
and through another account. So, it must not be something with my setup. Also I
get the same results running on my brothers computer, also running Ubuntu 6.10
(I recently converted my entire family to Ubuntu, except my father which still
likes Windowz 98 for some reason...)
Also I ran all three setups (VMware my account, Wine my account, Wine other
account) several times with full wine/system restarts in between to make sure I
wasn't seeing any first-run issues like Ken mentioned above. Sorry for babbling
on so long :)

hi, tom:
I've just found out problem is in /etc/X11/xorg.conf. I notice this problem
happened to some others programs, so it wasn't a isolated problem of winecfg.
To solve the problem, I commented some lines in xorg.conf:
Section "Device"
Identifier "NVIDIA Corporation NVIDIA Default Card"
Driver "nvidia"
# Option "XAANoOffscreenPixmaps" "true"
# Option "MultisampleCompatibility" "true"
# Option "AllowGLXWithComposite" "true"
# Option "AddARGBGLXVisuals" "true"
Option "RenderAccel" "true"
EndSection
yeah, I've worked with aixgl+beryl, and nvidia driver has some problems with
emerald window decorated, so these options are necessary.
Sorry about this post, but I hope it is useful to help anyone.

I was not able to get a backtrace even when running it with winedbg. It
simply prints
err:d3d_shader:vshader_input_is_color Either no vertexdeclaration present, or
register not matched. This should never happen.
fixme:winmm:MMDRV_Exit Closing while ll-driver open
Process of pid=000a has terminated
At which point a backtrace is impossible.
I tried adding a breakpoint for vshader_input_is_color, but it a message about
the function not being found, and that winedbg would try once a new dll was
loaded.
I am running a hand-built GIT version, ie. not a stripped one.

Looking thru the trace it _looks_ like EnumResourceNamesW is failing. But if
you look in windows\temp the xpm files are there. So I decided to look inside
my desktop WinRAR.desktop to see why the icon wasn't showing..
Icon=0a2e_winrar.0
is what I see, but when I look in windows\temp it is named 0a2e_winrar.0.xpm
So I tried to just add the .xpm and refresh.. That did not work. So I went into
the properties of the icon and manually selected that xpm to be the icon.. Then
went back into the file with kwrite (thats what I used in the first place) and
now the icon line looks like this:
Icon=/d/windows/temp/0a2e_winrar.0.xpm
/d is not a real windows drive.. it is reiserfs formatted blank specifically for
wine usage..
So the problem now is that wine is not putting the proper path and filenames
into the files.. That is about as far as I can get into fixing this issue, as I
can't code stuff even this advanced to save my life.

Before I attach the traces, here is some additional info
If I go into winecfg and uncheck the box to link wine's desktop to x's
~/Desktop, and then manually create
~/.wine/dosdevices/c:/windows/profiles/(user)/Start\ Menu and
~/.wine/dosdevices/c:/windows/profiles/(user)/Start\ Menu/Programs
Then when I install WinRAR, the lnk files go to the proper location in
~/.wine/dosdevices/c:/windows/profiles/(user)/<Desktop/Start\ Menu/Start\
Menu/Programs> and the .desktop files are put in the correct location under
either ~/Desktop or ~/.local/share/applications/wine
SO the correct fix is to make (most likely wineprefixcreate) create
~/.wine/dosdevices/c:/windows/profiles/(user)/Start\ Menu and
~/.wine/dosdevices/c:/windows/profiles/(user)/Start\ Menu/Programs
and make winecfg default to _not_ linking the user's wine desktop/my docs etc to
the user's xorg desktop/home dir etc

Summary: menubuilder is broken
Product: Wine
Version: unspecified
Platform: All
OS/Version: other
Status: NEW
Severity: normal
Priority: P2
Component: wine-programs
AssignedTo: wine-bugs(a)winehq.org
ReportedBy: Speeddymon(a)gmail.com
Currently wine and the menubuilder/shelllink is broken in a couple of ways..
1) winecfg defaults to directing the windows desktop to the user's xorg
~/Desktop. This is bad because then wine puts a .lnk file and a .desktop file
on the user's ~/Desktop when it installs a program.. wine should put all .lnk
files in an out of the way location like ~/.wine/menubuilder/<Menu/Desktop> and
then make the .desktop files from there and put them to the real desktop..
2) There is no Start Menu folder created under wine's windows profile, which
causes at least WinRAR to put menu icons under the program's install directory.
Wine needs to at least make a Start Menu symlink in
drive_c/windows/profiles/(user)/ that points to the xorg menu location so that
programs can at least find the start menu, and then as above, should redirect
lnk files to the correct location..
I will attach traces here.

practical). However, with wine this doesn't work and all the screenshots in the
load dialog are just black.

This has been fixed in wine-0.9.33. I guess this bug can be closed.

Zemax is a proprietary optical simulator. I've jet tested the 2003 version that
was were available at our lab, and it worked perfectly:
http://appdb.winehq.org/appview.php?iAppId=4422
Now I've tried the 2005 version and wine crashes on zemax startup. The same
version works ok on windows (only tried with windows XP). The demo version
available online works with wine too (the last time I've tried). I would like to
use the simulator on Linux.
If you need further debug information please ask what to test and I'll report
the results.

Tired from waiting, I took wine 0.9.30, applied the patch, built deb packages
and uploaded to following URL:
http://catchmedia.com/~arieh/wine_direct_ddraw
Now the game runs acceptable on Pentium 166, 64MB RAM.

Summary: DInput bug in Grand Theft Auto Series
Product: Wine
Version: 0.9.33.
Platform: PC
OS/Version: Linux
Status: UNCONFIRMED
Severity: normal
Priority: P2
Component: wine-directx-dinput
AssignedTo: wine-bugs(a)winehq.org
ReportedBy: mahasler(a)gmail.com
There's a strange dinput bug in the GTA series (GTA 3, GTA ViceCity & GTA
SanAndreas). Whenever you start a game with a gamepad plugged in the protagonist
will start running ahead immedeately. That means for some reason the game engine
detects the left analog stick being pushed up although it isn't. Also, actually
moving the left Stick doesn't have any effect at all. The x axis of the right
analog stick is detected correctly, however the y axis isn't detected. Instead
the y axis of the POV is falsely being detected as the y axis of the right
analog stick. The x axis of the POV isn't recognized.
All the buttons seem to work correctly, so it's just the axes that are messed up.
Wine doesn't print out anything dinput-related. So if needed, please let me know
how I can get wine to print out useful debug information for this.
Thanks.

AFAIK the Xorg bug in question is also present in XFree86.
