It turns out it is somehow specific to my account, though i haven't yet figured out why. My brother also purchased Garry's Mod through steam, and for his account, it works. I made some little screenies just for detail. http://i21.photobucket.com/albums/b292/beg1689/windows.png - This is my steam account in Windowz XP (through VMware) http://i21.photobucket.com/albums/b292/beg1689/linux.png - This is my account again, running through wine. http://i21.photobucket.com/albums/b292/beg1689/josh.png - This is my brothers account, on the same computer with the same fresh wine install. These shots were taken in Ubuntu 6.10, Wine 0.9.33. So my point is, for some strange reason Wine won't let ME specifically use my games purchased through steam. Even though they obviously work, even in VMware and through another account. So, it must not be something with my setup. Also I get the same results running on my brothers computer, also running Ubuntu 6.10 (I recently converted my entire family to Ubuntu, except my father which still likes Windowz 98 for some reason...) Also I ran all three setups (VMware my account, Wine my account, Wine other account) several times with full wine/system restarts in between to make sure I wasn't seeing any first-run issues like Ken mentioned above. I tried adding a breakpoint for vshader_input_is_color, but it a message about the function not being found, and that winedbg would try once a new dll was loaded. But if you look in windows\temp the xpm files are there. So I decided to look inside my desktop WinRAR.desktop to see why the icon wasn't showing.. Icon=0a2e_winrar.0 is what I see, but when I look in windows\temp it is named 0a2e_winrar.0.xpm So I tried to just add the .xpm and refresh.. That did not work. So I went into the properties of the icon and manually selected that xpm to be the icon.. Then went back into the file with kwrite (thats what I used in the first place) and now the icon line looks like this: Icon=/d/windows/temp/0a2e_winrar.0.xpm /d is not a real windows drive.. it is reiserfs formatted blank specifically for wine usage.. So the problem now is that wine is not putting the proper path and filenames into the files.. This is bad because then wine puts a .lnk file and a .desktop file on the user's ~/Desktop when it installs a program.. wine should put all .lnk files in an out of the way location like ~/.wine/menubuilder/<Menu/Desktop> and then make the .desktop files from there and put them to the real desktop.. 2) There is no Start Menu folder created under wine's windows profile, which causes at least WinRAR to put menu icons under the program's install directory. Wine needs to at least make a Start Menu symlink in drive_c/windows/profiles/(user)/ that points to the xorg menu location so that programs can at least find the start menu, and then as above, should redirect lnk files to the correct location.. The same version works ok on windows (only tried with windows XP). The demo version available online works with wine too (the last time I've tried). I would like to use the simulator on Linux. Whenever you start a game with a gamepad plugged in the protagonist will start running ahead immedeately. That means for some reason the game engine detects the left analog stick being pushed up although it isn't. Also, actually moving the left Stick doesn't have any effect at all. The x axis of the right analog stick is detected correctly, however the y axis isn't detected. Instead the y axis of the POV is falsely being detected as the y axis of the right analog stick. The x axis of the POV isn't recognized. All the buttons seem to work correctly, so it's just the axes that are messed up. Wine doesn't print out anything dinput-related. So if needed, please let me know how I can get wine to print out useful debug information for this.
